However, his mother has now revealed that her son has been given a clean bill of health and is at school; a video shows him ringing the chemo bell at his hospital last week to mark a new chapter in his life. By The Associated Press Three Alaska hospitals have now instituted crisis protocols that would allow them to ration care if needed as the state recorded the worst COVID-19 diagnosis rates in the U.S. in recent days. According to data collected by Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering, one person in every 84 in Alaska was diagnosed with COVID-19 from Sept. 22 to 29. The next highest rate was one in every 164 people in West Virginia. Fairbanks Memorial Hospital activated the protocol Friday because of a critical shortage of bed capacity and staffing, along with the inability to transfer patients to other facilities. Two other Alaska hospitals, in Anchorage and Bethel, have invoked the same protocol. Fairbanks Chief Medical Officer Dr. Angelique Ramirez said the decision to move to crisis standards was because of many factors, including community spread caused by the low vaccination rates and a high number of patients waiting to be admitted. Statewide, 60% of eligible Alaskans are fully vaccinated. The Fairbanks North Star Borough is the third-worst region for vaccination rates in Alaska,...

(CNN)Being a nurse means everything to Andrea Babinski, but she is willing to risk it all -- the connections to colleagues she likes, the patients she cares for, not to mention the steady paycheck -- for a simple belief. Babinski believes that the decision of whether she should get vaccinated against Covid-19 should be a personal medical choice. So far, she has chosen not to be vaccinated. She says she's not anti-vaccine, or against the Covid-19 vaccine. She encouraged her father to get one. "I've got an actual appointment to get to for my medication, so can we just think about others before ourselves." Tom also claimed the crisis was the "perfect scenario for fuel companies" and alleged it allowed them to sell off fuel nearing its expiry date, although there is no evidence of this. The shelf life for petrol is around six months if stored in a sealed container at an optimum temperature of 20 degrees celsius. The crisis is the result of a lack of HGV drivers affecting the supply chain to stations around the country. A relatively minor number...

A Covid-hit Irish pensioner who was 'rescued' from a hospital by an Italian anti-vaxxer - only for him to die of the disease days later.  Covid patient Joe McCarron, 67, from Dungloe, County Donegal, was encouraged to leave Letterkenny University Hospital by his anti-vaxxer 'friends' on Tuesday, September 14.  However, he was rushed back into hospital by ambulance less than two days later, suffering from serious breathing difficulties, and died a week later on September 24.  In a video that was widely-shared online, Joe is seen visibly struggling to breathe as his anti-vaxxer 'friend' Italian Antonio Mureddu argues with doctors before taking him home from the hospital. The headlines are coming fast and furious: United Airlines is firing nearly 600 workers who have refused to follow its vaccination mandate. This or that hospital chain is firing a couple hundred workers for the same reason. While those headlines do show that companies are serious about their vaccination mandates, they’re obscuring the most important point: The results show that mandates work, and the number of people quitting or getting fired is tiny compared to the number of people getting vaccinated. Take United. The 593 workers being fired for refusing to be vaccinated, and even the 3% who have requested exemptions from the requirement, are a tiny minority of the company’s workforce of 67,000 people in the United States. The company is still getting plenty of applications for jobs it posts, too, with 20,000 applications for 2,000 flight attendant positions. When Delta Airlines announced that unvaccinated workers would pay a $200 a month surcharge to be on the company health plan, 20,000 workers were unvaccinated. Within a month, nearly 9,000 got a shot—a major improvement, but not approaching United’s level of success. Strong...

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham made the baffling assertion on Tuesday night that “it’s almost always a lie” when people say hospitals are being overwhelmed due to the covid-19 pandemic. Ingraham opened her show Tuesday railing against vaccine mandates. Hundreds of unvaccinated health care workers in New York were suspended Tuesday. Ingraham said that because nurses and first responders who are resisting the mandates are being suspended, “they’ve gone from frontline heroes to public health menaces.” According to the New York governor’s office, 92 percent of all hospital staff have gotten at least one dose. “The staffing shortages due to the mandates are getting worse by the day,” Ingraham said as she claimed this is what’s “sabotaging the health care system.” “It kind of makes you think this wasn’t about saving the hospitals right from the outset,” Ingraham remarked, before making this stunning, false claim: We now know that when they say the hospitals are being overwhelmed, it’s almost always a lie. With the exception of a few big city hospitals in the U.S., our hospital system was stretched for sure,...
As anti-vaxx groups nationwide continue to push dangerous theories, some are already reaping the consequences. In their latest deadly advice, the same anti-vaxx groups that pushed at-home COVID-19 remedies including drinking bleach, taking ivermectin, and gargling Betadine have been encouraging members not to go to the hospital. The conspiracy theory lies in the idea that doctors are preventing anti-vaxxers from getting miracle cures and are killing them intentionally. Well, we can’t say anything about doctors but these anti-vaxx groups are surely increasing deaths. After listening to the advice of these groups and leaving the hospital, a 75-year-old man in Ireland died of COVID-19 Friday. Elderly patient Joe McCarron was convinced to leave Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) on Sept. 14 only to be readmitted to the hospital two days later for severe breathing issues. According to The Irish Times, he died Friday without regaining consciousness and was buried Sunday in his hometown of Dungloe. A video of the incident in which anti-vaxxers campaigned to remove him from the hospital against medical advice went viral 10 days before McCarron’s death, the Irish Mirror reported. In...

They had until September 15 to comply.  Last week, about 375 employees were suspended for not being vaccinated, but 200 received the jab before Monday's deadline, Spokesperson Megan Rivers said. So easy! Facebook is a menace. COVID-19 is a menace. Conservatism is a cesspool. Together, those three ingredients have created a toxic stew of malevolent death and devastation. We can talk about all those things in the abstract, look at the numbers and statistics, and catch the occasional whiff of seditionist right-wing rhetoric. But I hadn’t really fully understood just how horrifying that combination of right-wing extremism, Facebook, and a killer virus was until I became a regular at the Herman Cain Awards subreddit. This series will document some of those stories, so we are aware of what the other side is doing to our country. Today’s cautionary tale is Dwight. Not only was this a stupid meme, assuming what, that the virus had stopped spreading? But it can’t even do math properly. MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — We’re getting a clear picture of the strained hospital capacity in the state. Doctors say COVID-19 patients continue to congest the overall system. M Health Fairview Friday reports of the 140 patients currently admitted with COVID, 110 are not vaccinated. That’s nearly 80%. READ MORE: COVID In MN: MDH Reports 2,645 More Virus Cases As Latest Positivity Rate Hovers At 7.1% Dr. Andrew Olson, director of hospital medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, said we’re in a challenging place. He says hospital and ICU capacity across the state are stressed because of COVID, delayed healthcare, and staffing challenges. “There is enough COVID in the ICUs right now it makes it challenging for a patient with simple pneumonia who’s very sick from it, or perhaps a patient who’s had a heart attack, to find a bed in an expeditious manner,” Olson said. Hospital systems work together to find space, but that means other things that can be pushed, are. “There are procedures that need to get done that are being delayed longer than we would typically...
A central Arkansas hospital system is requiring staff members who receive a religious exemption from getting the COVID-19 vaccine to also give up other popular medications. Conway Regional Medical Center has joined the growing number of hospitals mandate Covid shots for workers. Employees of the hospital system will have until October 8 to be fully vaccinated, but there is an option for some to get a religious exemption from the requirement. Hospital leadership noticed that many were applying for religious exemptions based on the potential use of fetal cell lines in the development of the vaccine.  To make sure that employees applying for waivers to dodge vaccine requirements are doing so because of their truly-held beliefs, the hospital is making them attest that they will stop using 30 other common drugs that also used fetal cell lines for development, including Tylenol and Tums.  Conway Regional Health System is requiring all employees to get vaccinated by October 8 to keep their jobs. Those who apply for a religious exemption on the basis of vaccines using fetal cell links in development...
A Florida man barred from visiting his wife in the hospital while she battled COVID made sure she knew he was with her by standing outside her window every morning with a sign that read 'I love you.' Donna Crane, 56, from Port Orange, Florida, suffered a rare breakthrough case of COVID-19, testing positive a week after receiving her Johnson & Johnson vaccine - and one week before she was considered fully-vaccinated. By Rebecca Boone | Associated Press BOISE, Idaho — In another ominous sign about the spread of the delta variant, Idaho public health leaders on Thursday expanded health care rationing statewide and individual hospital systems in Alaska and Montana have enacted similar crisis standards amid a spike in the number of unvaccinated COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization. The decisions marked an escalation of the pandemic in several Western states struggling to convince skeptical people to get vaccinated. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare made the announcement after St. Luke’s Health System, Idaho’s largest hospital network, asked state health leaders to allow “crisis standards of care” because the increase in COVID-19 patients has exhausted the state’s medical resources. Idaho is one of the least vaccinated U.S. states, with only about 40% of its residents fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Crisis care standards mean that scarce resources such as ICU beds will be allotted to the patients most likely to survive. Other patients will be treated with less effective methods or, in dire cases, given pain relief and other palliative care. ...

What first struck Nathaniel Osborn when he and his wife took their son, Seth, to the emergency room this summer was how packed the waiting room was for a Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Florida hospital's emergency room was so crowded there weren't enough chairs for the family to all sit as they waited. And waited. Hours passed and 12-year-old Seth's condition worsened, his body quivering from the pain shooting across his lower belly. Osborn said his wife asked why it was taking so long to be seen. A nurse rolled her eyes and muttered, “COVID." Seth was finally diagnosed with appendicitis more than six hours after arriving at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health North Hospital in late July. Around midnight, he was taken by ambulance to a sister hospital about a half-hour away that was better equipped to perform pediatric emergency surgery, his father said. But by the time the doctor operated in...

THE Prime Minister announced his Winter plan to keep Covid at bay yesterday. Britain is currently in a good position in the fight against the virus - with deaths relatively low and the vaccines working, despite cases remaining high. 4The country is currently enjoying the most relaxed rules in Europe, but this could change...Credit: LNP But there are a number of factors - or "pivot points" - that could see the country plunged back into lockdown, with stricter restrictions brought back in. As we move into the cooler months, there are three key things that will make or break the PM's plan to keep rules as lax as they are... Hospital admissions The Government laid out it's Plan A, which largely relies on the vaccines. Within days children over 12 can now get one dose of a Covid vaccine, and the rollout of booster jabs for over-50s is set to begin. It is hoped this will be enough to keep the lid on this wave of the pandemic over the winter months. But Plan B will be swiftly deployed if...
