New York (CNN Business)If you've shopped at Walmart recently, you may have noticed more employees snaking through aisles, carrying blue tote bins and picking items off shelves to be delivered, either curbside at stores or to customers' homes. The employees are called personal shoppers — and their ranks are skyrocketing. Walmart (WMT) says it now has more than 170,000 of these workers in stores, more than double the number in the position last year and larger than Macy's (M) entire workforce.A surge in online shopping is expected to permanently alter the retail workforce as major chains turn their stores into warehouses to fulfill digital orders. Jobs dedicated to online fulfillment are hardly a new concept. But now, they're becoming more widespread. Stores from Target (TGT) to Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) are adding similar positions to Walmart's personal shoppers to compete with Amazon. Using their stores as warehouses enables them to get orders to customers faster and save on shipping costs. That means Walmart, already the largest retailer in the United States, with around 1.6 million workers, needs to hire staff for...

The PlayStation 5 launches on Thursday, and buyers who pre-order the PS5 or PS5 digital version will receive consoles at home. Stores will begin to sell more PS5 shares, although supply is expected to be lower. Retailers will not sell the PS5 at retail locations, but only online. Both Walmart and Target will save two PS5 versions on launch day. Lucky gamers who were able to pre-order the PS5 several weeks ago during Sony’s deeply flawed PlayStation 5 preorder will soon receive the console version of their choice or will still have what was in stock when they tried to buy one. Both the PS5 and PS5 digital version will be shipped to buyers on Thursday, and they will be launched in stores. However, this is not the release that Sony envisioned for its biggest console release after the PS4. It happens during a major epidemic. The corona virus novel infects hundreds of thousands of people worldwide every day, and the United States alone receives more than 100,000 new cases daily. This is practically impossible for any store...
ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJZ) — A Maryland entrepreneur is getting a big opportunity this fall after being one of the few to successfully pitch their baby care products to Walmart. “I think every entrepreneur’s dream is to be in Walmart, and for them to give this platform to small businesses is just incredible,” Nina Farzin, Oogie Solutions Founder and CEO, said. Farzin is one of a select few small business owners selected out of thousands to sell their products on Walmart’s shelves. “We were actually one of the fortunate ones that they accepted right on the spot,” she said. The Rockville-based mom’s baby care product was selected earlier this month during Walmart’s first-ever virtual Open Call event to American made products in their stores. “This is the Oogie bear. It’s a very simple product that I invented,” Farzin said. “At the time, a working mom just wanted to get sleep. My daughter would not sleep through the night because of boogers.” So she created the Oogie bear to gently scrape away her daughter’s mucus, boogers and earwax without needing saline. “It...

"Starting November 14, Walmart stores and Neighborhood Markets will be open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. until further notice," the company tweeted on Oct. 23. "This will give customers more time to shop and help us disperse traffic throughout the day. Stores with more reduced hours will keep current hours of operation." Currently the hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Walmart representatives told a local news station in Syracuse, New York that the expanded hours will still include a special shopping hour every Tuesday for people age 60 and older and other individuals who are most vulnerable. If you were tossing around picking up Apple’s new iPad Air, which my colleague Dieter Bohn says is the best tablet for most people despite costing $600, it won’t actually cost you $600 to buy one at Walmart and Amazon. Right now, you can pick up a 64GB base model in green for $560. This is a relatively small discount, all said, but any deal on the as-of-yet unreleased iPad Air that features USB-C charging, a brand-new design, and powerful internal specs is a good one in my book. VIDEO5:1505:15Consumer staples vs. discretionary stocks: Traders pick sidesTrading Nation Consumer staples stocks could be playing catch-up. While the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) hit another new high on Wednesday and is up 16% year to date, staples stocks have been lagging, with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) up just over 2% for the year. Morgan Stanley analysts added to the pain Wednesday by downgrading shares of J.M. Smucker and lowering their price target on the $111 stock to $107, citing "inconsistent investment" in marketing and innovation and market share losses in the company's key categories. But the tides could be turning. Not one staples stock is negative for the past three months, and all but five are in the green this month, according to FactSet. Earnings from prominent constituents including Walmart have also come in better than anticipated. The technicals seem to support a bullish change of pace, too, said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak. "The XLY Consumer Discretionary ETF is getting very, very overbought," he told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Wednesday, referencing its chart. Zoom...
