Snowfall  Thursday night led to chain controls being enforced on Highway 50 between Twin Bridges and Meyers in El Dorado County and on Interstate 80 from the Nyack area to Truckee in Nevada County. (KABC) -- The recent Southern California storms have brought a delightful layer of powder to the mountains, where families have flocked in recent days not just for skiing, but snowball fights and other winter fun.Up in Wrightwood, where most roads were clear enough to get through without too much difficulty, children were playing on local hillsides, building snowmen and throwing snowballs. Some families even brought their outdoor cooking gear."It was so much fun!" said one little girl who came with her family from Temecula.While the roads to Wrightwood were navigable, Highway 138 heading up to the Crestline area was a mess, even for drivers who planned in advance with chains on their tires.CHP advised people that wherever they are driving, come prepared with chains and plan to proceed with caution.

(KABC) -- A pair of beloved and highly-watched bald eagles in Big Bear Valley was spotted shielding their eggs from snow amid a blast of cold weather.The feathered couple, Jackie and Shadow, have been taking turns incubating their two precious eggs.The parents and their nest were seen covered in fresh snow brought on by the latest storm to hit the Southland. Nearly a foot of snow fell in Big Bear, and even more snow is expected on Thursday.The group Friends of Big Bear Valley installed the eagle nest cam in 2015.A history of eagles in the area is available here.The nest is located about 145 feet up in a Jeffrey pine tree with a view of Big Bear Lake.     Texans are preparing themselves for a winter storm predicted to be unlike anything they've seen in decades. A polar vortex will bring temperatures in the Lone Star State to below zero in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service. The service has issued a winter storm warning for the entire state. In Houston, the NWS issued a wind chill warning for the first time in the city. Even as far south as San Antonio, residents are expected to receive two-to-three inches between Sunday and Monday morning. Electricity companies Oncor and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas have encouraged their customers to reduce electric use as much as possible. In a statement, Oncor suggested customers turn down thermostats to 68 degrees, avoid using large appliances, and turn off and unplug nonessential lights and appliances. On Friday, Gov.     A strong storm system that swept through the region brought heavy rain and whipping winds with gusts topping 60 mph that left thousands in the Hudson Valley without power. Con Edison, NYSEG, Central Hudson, Rockland & Orange Utilities all had thousands lose power on Wednesday, Oct. 7 as the storm rolled through the region, toppling trees and downing power lines. Crews worked through the night to repair hundreds of reported outages, with dozens of customers still in the dark on Thursday morning. As of 9:40 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, Con Edison was still reporting a pair of outages, Rockland & Orange had seven outages impacting 19 customers, and NYSEG was still making repairs to dozens in Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties. Central Hudson was hit the hardest, with 4,529 customers in Greene County, 1,859 in Ulster, and 44 in Dutchess still without power.     SANFORD, Maine (AP) — Powerful thunderstorms pummeled parts of southern Maine on Tuesday, knocking down trees and leaving some without electricity. The storm also brought copious amounts of hail. The hail was so thick that at least one community brought out a snow plow to clear roads. Two to four inches of of hail fell during the storm in Sanford, which enlisted a plow to clean up the mess, the fire chief said.
