When the Harbor Animal Care Center faced a food crunch in August, volunteer Jan Bunker logged on to Nextdoor to plead for donations. “Hi, animal lovers! Down at Harbor Shelter in San Pedro, we are totally out of rabbit food and hay for both rabbits and guinea pigs,” Bunker wrote. Her post got a wave of responses, and strangers delivered hay — a necessity for rabbits and guinea pigs, who can quickly die if they go without food. To Bunker and other critics, the food shortage was an example of how the Los Angeles Animal Services department overlooks the smallest creatures in its care. Volunteers do most of the work of feeding and cleaning the cages of the thousands of rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters that come through L.A.’s shelter system, several said. California ‘He just sits in this concrete cell’: Abused dogs in L.A. shelters will get a break L.A. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wanted to set an example on a special day. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex provided meals for volunteers and staff organizing Monday’s events at The King Center in Atlanta, a spokesperson for the couple told People magazine. The couple also received support from the late minister and activist's daughter, Dr. Bernice King. According to the outlet, local Black-owned food trucks Paige’s Pastries & Bistro, as well as Parlay Savory Saloon, served free lunches to those who helped put together the events, including a voter registration, an education drive and a service project to gather donations for unsheltered and homeless people in Atlanta. "Thank you, Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, for providing local Black-owned food trucks for our #MLKDay service project volunteers," The King Center tweeted. "Your care matters so much to those here to register and educate voters and collect items for our homeless neighbors." Aguilar, Superintendent, Sacramento CIty Unified School District. “These masks demonstrate a continued commitment by the State of California to make sure our schools are both open for in-person learning and also protected as much as possible against COVID-19. China has sealed off thousands of Winter Olympic staff and volunteers for a month, banning them from the outside world as part of its zero-Covid policy to protect next month's Games.  China, where the virus emerged toward the end of 2019, has pursued a zero-tolerance strategy on Covid-19 and is taking the same approach to limit the pandemic's potential impact on the February 4-20 Winter Olympics and subsequent Paralympics.  Starting Tuesday, thousands of Games-related staff, volunteers, cleaners, cooks and coach drivers will be cocooned for weeks in the so-called 'closed loop' with no direct physical access to the outside world.  That contrasts with the Covid-delayed Tokyo Summer Olympics, which allowed some movement in and out for volunteers and other personnel.      China has sealed off thousands of Winter Olympic staff and volunteers for a month, banning them from the outside world as part of its zero-Covid policy to protect next the February Games (pictured, staff in PPE inside the 'bubble') The global media and roughly 3,000 athletes are expected to start arriving in the Chinese capital in the weeks ahead and...
Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry (R) is heading a multi-state lawsuit aimed to protect children and teachers from President Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate, filing the lawsuit Tuesday in the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. This specific lawsuit targets both Biden’s requirements on masking toddlers and mandating coronavirus shots for staff and volunteers of Head Start Programs. “Like all of his other unlawful attempts to impose medical decisions on Americans, Biden’s overreaching orders to mask two-year-olds and force vaccinate teachers in our underserved communities will cost jobs and impede child development,” Landry said in a statement. “If enacted, Biden’s authoritarianism will cut funding, programs, and childcare that working families, single mothers, and elderly raising grandchildren rely on desperately,” he continued. MILLIONS tonight saw Boris Johnson on TV urge all Brits to get jabbed to beat Covid. IT has been a season we will all remember… and some may wish to forget. In pure football terms, the players, the managers, the staff and volunteers have performed wonders during the pandemic. 4West Ham have enjoyed a sensational season on the pitchCredit: Reuters 4Man Utd fans have been amongst the most vociferous protesters after the club owners joined the ill-fated plot for a European Super LeagueCredit: AP As freedom beckons, here is my brief summary of a unique season. At West Ham it has been thrilling and exceptional. Unhappily, our supporters have been forced to miss the consistent quality of live performance they have been waiting for. No doubt in plenty of East London living rooms the noise has been gargantuan, drowning out television commentaries and soundtracks that early on was hilariously off-target, operated by a DJ on speed, it seemed. The TV companies were doing what the authorities asked for. They provided your team’s every game in the Prem and many in the EFL — no complaint about high-quality production or the new rollover contracts. The truth, however, is...

Ray Roa If you’re only driving on the Tampa Bay area’s billboard-strewn highways, your radio dial tuned to a frequency of 90 or above, you’ll get the impression that Tampa Bay is a soulless, homogenous place. But if you venture to the left side of the dial—and, perhaps, take the scenic route—you’ll discover the lesser-known dimensions of this region. And they’re a hell of a lot more interesting. Well before Creative Loafing Tampa Bay was slinging accolades at its first Best of the Bay, WMNF 88.5 FM was broadcasting from a tiny house in South Tampa, having launched in 1979 with help from donations collected via a door-to-door campaign. It’s now funded primarily through listeners via periodic donation drives they call “Marathon.” Pre-pandemic, these were always stressful-but-festive multi-day events that brought volunteers together to answer phones and tally digital pledges. Restaurants like Queen of Sheba kept volunteers and staff fed during those long days. From the get-go, WMNF’s programming served as a refuge for music lovers who prefer the deeper cuts and for progressive news junkies skeptical of...
