Just imagine, if you can, that there was not one Winston Churchill but two, born just three years apart. Both were married with three children and both were accomplished writers with military backgrounds and a love of politics, both smoked - one cigars the other a pipe - and later in life they were proficient amateur artists. Now try to picture this: that long before the Churchill we all know became Britain’s greatest and most revered statesman, the other Churchill, an American author, was more famous than his namesake and had a global following. Indeed, such was his celebrity that our former war-time leader - voted the greatest Briton of all time in a BBC poll - wrote to the novelist proposing that to avoid confusion over their names, he would in future sign ‘all published articles, stories or other work’ by using his full surname: Spencer-Churchill. Looking through the prism of history it seems inconceivable now that the British Churchill, who for generations has symbolised our nation’s resilience during World War II, should play second fiddle to anyone, let...

As white settlers made their way west, so did the word “squaw.” Eventually, it took root in nearly 100 California place names, possibly more — Squaw Creek, Squaw Peak, Squaw Hollow, Squaw Flat. For a historic ski resort that hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics and was once known as Squaw Valley, the reckoning came last year. Visitors are now greeted by signs welcoming them to Palisades Tahoe. In another Squaw Valley — a landscape of rolling hills about halfway between Fresno and Kings Canyon National Park — the debate over whether to adopt a new name has pitted Native American activists against a white county supervisor. At the heart of the battle is what “squaw” means and who decides whether it’s offensive. Roman Rain Tree, a member of the Dunlap Band of Mono Indians, is leading a campaign to change the name of the land where his ancestors lived for generations from Squaw Valley to Nuum Valley. Nuum means “the people” in the Western Mono language. Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig, who moved to the area from...

A pair of Quidditch leagues announced on Wednesday that they will be changing the name of the 'real-life' version of the sport in order to 'distance' themselves from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling for her statements about the transgender community. In a joint statement on Wednesday, the U.S. Quidditch (USQ) and Major League Quidditch (MLQ) organizations announced they will be changing the name of the sport following the controversy. Both leagues are also creating a survey to vote on a name change.   'The leagues are hoping a name change can help them continue to distance themselves from the works of J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, who has increasingly come under scrutiny for her anti-trans positions in recent years,' the statement read. The 'fictional' sport, featured in Rowling's Harry Potter franchise, had inspired fans of the books and films to create their own version and organize leagues, minus the flying broomsticks. Rowling, 56, initially came under fire in June 2020 after she had tweeted about biological sex, which led to backlash from the trans community. That...
A New Jersey high school will remove President Woodrow Wilson from its name over complaints it perpetuates racism.  The Camden School District voted on the decision 18 months ago, but due to COVID-19 priorities, the process to pick a new name had been postponed until now. High contenders to have the school named after them include former President Barack Obama, late civil rights activist and Representative John Lewis, and a superintendent who recently passed away.  Initially, a 100-members committee composed of parents and school officials had been chosen to complete the task, but the district informed that the process will start anew with a 10-person committee, NJ.com reported. Woodrow, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, once governor of New Jersey and the 28th president of the United States, led the country into war to 'make the world safe for democracy.'  However, upon reexamination of his legacy after 2020's summer of racial unrest, he has been heavily criticized for promoting the Klu Klux Klan and Confederacy sentiments, and racially re-segregating the federal civil service.  The school has borne his name since its establishment, 90...

University of Florida students who said they supported changing the name Black Friday because of possible racial connotations - with one even saying it 'sounded offensive' - changed their minds after they were told it has nothing to do with race.   Students at the Gainesville campus were asked by a student reporter with Campus Reform whether they supported renaming Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that is seen as a commercially driven day of consumerism. Their responses were recorded on video.  Black Friday was named in honor of retailers earning a profit and going 'into the black' on the day after Thanksgiving after a year of loss and being 'in the red.'  Ophelie Jacobson asks students if they will be participating in Black Friday. The state of California's first law school is changing its name to rid itself of its founder, who played a significant role in the mass murder of indigenous people. UC Hastings College of the Law is part of the California university system and is named for Serranus Clinton Hastings, a former Congressman who came to California during the Gold Rush. A report commissioned by the university president found that Hastings paid for and promoted expeditions in the state that caused the death and displacement of hundreds of Yuki Indians, whose land he later stole for himself.  Hastings donated $100,000 in gold coins to California to establish the San Francisco law school in San Francisco.  Some of the school's most famous alums are Vice President Kamala Harris, who graduated from the school in 1989, and Congresswoman Jackie Speier.  UC Hastings in San Francisco, which will likely change its name  An image of Serranus Clinton Hastings, a former Congressman who came to California during the gold rush and is implicated in the mass killing of indigenous tribes Vice President Kamala Harris is Hastings'...

DENVER (CBS) – The Byers Branch of the Denver Public Library on the 600 block Santa Fe Drive has a new namesake. It now honors a leader in Denver Native American community instead. Many common names for species of plants, animals and insects, including the gypsy moth and Scott's oriole, have been dubbed 'racist' by scientists who want a change. In July the Entomological Society of America (ESA) removed the term 'gypsy' from the names of a moth and ant due to the fact it is seen as a slur for Romani people.  The association have since launched a public call for alternative common names for the moth Lymantria dispar and ant Aphenogaster araneoides.  Many species were named by early naturalists and explores for the things around them, people making a mark at the time and using terms acceptable to them.  'We can choose language that reflects our shared values,' Jessica Ware, president-elect of ESA told ScienceNews, speaking of the Better Common Names Project. On Friday, it was Major League Baseball that drew his ire. In a Friday afternoon statement, the former president lambasted the decision by Cleveland’s MLB team to change their name from the Indians to the Guardians starting in the 2022 season. Can anybody believe that the Cleveland Indians, a storied and cherished baseball franchise since taking the name in 1915, are changing their name to the Guardians? Such a disgrace.” Trump argued that Native Americans, who he referred to as “the many Indians of our Country,” will be the most outraged by the Cleveland team’s decision — which included a change of their logo as well. “I guarantee that the people who are most angry about it are the many Indians of our Country,” Trump said. “Wouldn’t it be an honor to have a team named the Cleveland Indians,...

Amazon is being urged to rename its personal assistant because girls also named Alexa are being relentlessly bullied by other schoolchildren, their parents say. The Alexa assistant — which was launched in 2014, but only had its UK debut in 2016 — can increasingly be found in homes via Amazon's Echo and Echo Dot devices. Not only is the AI-powered system named Alexa, it is also the default 'wake word' used to alert Amazon devices that an instruction or question will follow. However, this has led to individuals named Alexa becoming the butt of recurring jokes in which their name is shouted, followed by a command.  The assistant's granting of a name shared by real people has resulted in movements such as 'Alexa is a Human' — which is lobbying Amazon to reconsider the choice. There are some 4,000 individuals named Alexa under the age of 25 in the UK alone — many of whom report experiencing mockery thanks to their digital namesake.  Amazon is being urged to rename its personal assistant because girls also named Alexa are being relentlessly...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A local nonprofit is leading a debate over whether to change the name of a well-known Minnesota city.
