"Historically, both public and private institutions have been unwilling to directly invest in low-income people without significant restrictions attached. This red tape is in place not because any evidence shows that it is necessary, but rather because our society does not trust that people living in poverty have the character or ability to make good decisions for themselves," Cook County Board of Commissioners President Toni Preckwinkle said, according to a press release from May. "Cook County is reframing the way we think about government assistance and is proud to be leading the way in the American guaranteed income movement."

Fox News reporter Jacqui Heinrich hit the Biden administration for ignoring the invasion of northern France for a second straight year on Monday. People across the world honored veterans of Operation Overlord on the 78th anniversary of a day thousands of men breached Hitler’s Atlantic Wall. A memorial service was held in Normandy, France Monday morning. Throughout the day, the 4,414 American soldiers who died fighting the German war machine on June 6, 1944 were honored. For a second straight year, President Joe Biden did not mark the day through an official proclamation. On Special Report, Heinrich noted the silence from the White House on D-Day during an interview with Bret Baier. Baier noted the significance of the date, and asked Heinrich if she had heard anything from the president. Heinrich reported Biden routinely recognizes special dates, events, or months through proclamations: Nothing from the president or from the White House, and it’s actually the second year in a row for that. And it is not like this White House doesn’t issue statements frequently. On May 31, they gave a...

Kim Kardashian has urged Texas Governor Greg Abbott to spare the life of a domestic violence victim who is due to be executed in 22 days after she 'falsely' pleaded guilty to beating her two-year-old daughter to death following hours of police interrogation. Melissa Lucio, 53, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on April 27 in Texas for the murder of her daughter Mariah in 2007. Lucio maintains she is innocent and her lawyers contend Mariah died from injuries from a fall down the 14 steps of a steep staircase outside the family's apartment in the South Texas city of Harlingen.  During over five hours of relentless questioning, Lucio more than 100 times denied fatally beating the toddler to death. But worn down from a lifetime of abuse and the grief of losing her daughter, her lawyers say, the Texas woman finally acquiesced to investigators at 3am in the morning on February 17 2007. 'I guess I did it,' Lucio said when asked by police if she was responsibly for some of Mariah's injuries. Her lawyers say that...

He was sentenced to 16 months in jail and four years of supervised probation, and was required to register as a sex offender for the next decade. FOR the first time in two years, Social Security offices nationwide are set to fully open their doors this month. Many people are hoping this will help resolve the agency's backlog issues. 1SSA plans to reopen offices at the end of MarchCredit: Getty Like many other government agencies and private organizations, the agency closed its offices across the country in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The agency's decision to close its doors was intended to protect the agency’s employees as well as claimants from the unknown virus. However, when the SSA shut its doors, it did not close completely. People can still make in-person appointments for Social Security benefits but only if they have limited means and a critical situation. For instance, a person could make an in-person appointment if the individual was without food or shelter, including utilities, and the person needed to apply for or reinstate benefits.                  Hundreds of black women in Atlanta will be the recipients of no-strings-attached monthly checks for the next two years thanks to a nonprofit’s experiment with Universal Basic Income (UBI). The program will be centered in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr., which reportedly has one of the worst poverty rates in the city. “We know this story of the Old Fourth Ward, and the trends that are happening, are not just indicative of this neighborhood, but what’s happening across the country,” Hope Wollensack said. Wollensack is the executive director of the Georgia Resilience & Opportunity Fund (GRO), which says it is “exploring bold solutions to racial justice — and engaging community members and policy decision makers to do it.” The UBI program will give away $13 million total over the next two years, but only to black women. Those women will receive an average of $850 per month, and a total of 650 black women will be enrolled in the program. They will be divided randomly into two groups. One group will simply receive...
A young woman who was born with two vaginas revealed how she thought it was 'normal' to use two tampons every month before her diagnosis. As a teenager, Tee Bartlett, from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, said she had absolutely no idea that it was unusual to use two tampons at the same time, as she assumed all women had two vaginal openings. But she only discovered something wasn't right after she asked her mother 'which hole' a tampon needed to be inserted, which prompted an urgent doctor's visit. At the age of 16, Tee was finally diagnosed with a vaginal septum - a condition that happens when the female reproductive system doesn't fully develop, leaving a dividing wall of tissue in the vagina. CHICAGO (AP) — A former Chicago alderman nicknamed “Fast Eddie” for his backroom dealing was sentenced Friday by a federal judge to 18 months in prison for tax evasion. Edward R. Vrdolyak pleaded guilty two years ago to seeking to help another lawyer to evade paying about $800,000 in income taxes. The scheme was part of a plan to siphon off millions of dollars in legal fees stemming from a $9 billion tobacco settlement with the state of Illinois even though he did no legal work on the case. After sentencing Vrdolyak, U.S. District Judge Robert Dow said he will hold a hearing in three months to discuss when the 82-year-old Vrydolyak will report to prison. “I am not going to send Mr. Vrdolyak to prison during COVID,” the judge said. It has been 21 months since Vrdolyak’s guilty plea and four years since his indictment, which outlined his role in a bid to pocket millions from Illinois’ two-decade-old settlement with tobacco companies. In a court filing last month, prosecutors said Vrdolyak collected more than $12 million from that settlement...
MONACO (AP) — American triple jumper Omar Craddock was suspended Thursday in another case related to missing doping tests. The Athletics Integrity Unit said the Pan American Games champion has been charged for whereabouts violations and is under provisional suspension awaiting a hearing. Craddock was a two-time NCAA champion at Florida and won gold at the PanAm Games last year in Lima, Peru. His best result at the world championships came in 2015 when he finished fourth. Athletes can ben banned for two years if they are unavailable for testing, or fail to update details where they can be found by sample collection officials, three times within 12 months. World champion sprinter Christian Coleman was given a two-year whereabouts ban last month after escaping an earlier suspension on a technicality, and former 1,500-meter world champion Elijah Manangoi was banned for two years last week. World 400-meter champion Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain was cleared last month in a whereabouts case. DUBLIN, Calif. (CBS) — Lori Loughlin has reported to prison to begin serving her two-month sentence for her role in the college admissions scandal. A Bureau of Prisons spokesperson said Friday the “Full House” star is in custody at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California. You can now buy the Pixel 4A from Google for just $9 per month over 24 months as part of the new Google Fi phone subscription program. That monthly cost means you’d pay just just $216 for the phone, a substantial savings over its $349 upfront price. After you’ve made all 24 payments, you own the phone. You can also elect to add in a $6 per month device protection plan, meaning your monthly subscription cost is $15. That protection plan covers up to two incidents of accidental damage and one loss or theft claim in a year. (Loss and theft replacement isn’t available to New York state residents, however.) At $15 per month over 24 months, you’d pay $360 for the Pixel 4A over the course of the subscription, which is only $11 more than the phone’s typical $349 upfront cost. But if you were hoping you could sign up for this subscription, not get a protection plan, and then pay off the device in full to save more than $100 on a Pixel 4A, that’s not an option...
