Another record was set over the weekend when Customs and Border Protection's migrant encounter tracker for Fiscal Year 2022 surpassed the 2 million mark for the first time in U.S. history, according to reports. CBP sources told Fox News that the migrant encounters hit 2,001,034 this weekend, with the majority of the fourth quarter left to go. It comes after the agency released figures for July that showed encounters reaching below 200,000 for the first month since February. It was also the second consecutive month that saw a decline in encounters following four months in a row of increases. At this point in Fiscal Year 2021, encounter figures were at 1,277,177 – more than 700,000 less than the same point this year. Meanwhile, buses full of migrants continue to offload at New York City's Port Authority on Wednesday as Texas Governor Greg Abbott goes forward with an initiative sending illegal immigrants out of his state to major U.S. cities. Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs Miguel Castro received the migrants arriving in the Big Apple from Texas on Wednesday morning. Customs and...

Bare toilet paper shelves in supermarkets were a big story early in the coronavirus pandemic but they may not remain a thing of the past, and consumers are being warned to do their holiday shopping early—like, now—thanks to supply chain problems. And even then, you might have to settle. "We're getting into the full peak season," Gene Seroka, executive director the Port of Los Angeles, told the Los Angeles Times. "Every node of this supply chain is maxed out." That means 89 container ships waiting to be unloaded at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and cargo containers piled up on the docks at those ports, which handled nearly one-third of the nation's imports last year. It means a shortage of those container ships after many were put out of service early in the pandemic. Companies are having to figure out how to ship imports that they can't send on actual ships. Dollar Tree "previously assumed that ocean carriers would fulfill 85% of their contractual commitments—already a problematic situation—along with higher rates. Now the company projects that its...
What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic, it affects the climate of the entire planet. And what is happening this October is that the Arctic Ocean is too hot to regain its ice sheet at the usual rate. So, as the graph above shows, the Arctic ice sheet has never been this small at this time of year. The year 2012 (dotted line) holds the record with the least ice since data is available, however then the ice re-formed with the arrival of autumn, as usual. On the other hand, this year (blue line), with the high temperatures that Siberia and other areas of the Arctic have been registering, the water is too hot and the ice is not being able to form at the usual speed (in gray, the usual average is shown since nineteen eighty one). The season also broke records with a thaw higher than that of 2012 in between March and June and some days in July. You can consult the interactive graph with the sea ice surface of the Snow &...
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie Kemper has apologized for taking part in a 1999 Missouri pageant that once banned black members and celebrated the wealthy white elite, saying she was not aware at the time of its 'racist, sexist and elitist past'.  The 41-year-old actress spoke out on Monday after a photo of her being crowned the winner of the St Louis-based Veiled Prophet Ball when she was 19 years old started going viral on Twitter.  The Veiled Prophet Organization has been criticized in the past for its racist history and ties to white supremacy. In an Instagram post, Kemper said her ignorance about the organization's past as a teenager wasn't an excuse.  'When I was 19 years old, I decided to participate in a debutante ball in my hometown. The century-old organization that hosted the debutante ball had an unquestionably racist, sexist, and elitist past,' she wrote.  Ellie Kemper spoke out on Monday after a photo (above) of her being crowned the winner of the St Louis-based Veiled Prophet Ball when she was 19 years old started going viral on...

The songstress took home the trophy for Song of the Year during Sunday's ACM Awards, and fought back tears as she accepted the honor. Morris won the award for her song "The Bones," which she co-wrote along with Jimmy Robbins and Laura Veltz, and accepted the trophy on behalf of all of them at the Opry House in Nashville. "This is really bittersweet because I didn't write this by myself," Morris said. "Each time I've been so lucky to accept an award for this song, my co-writers Laura Veltz and Jimmy Robbins have not gotten a chance to say anything." Given the COVID-19 safety protocols throughout the year, shows have either been conducted virtually, or with significantly limited capacities, often with those performing being the only guests in attendance. "I so wish they could be here," an emotional Morris shared. "But thank...

Ballots are arriving at homes across Colorado this week. The state has had all-mail ballot elections since 2014, which has resulted in record turnout and, this year, many sighs of relief from people who do not have to vote in person during a pandemic (though vote centers will be open in every Colorado county for those who like the personal touch, lost their ballot...or even want to register on election day, as you can if you've lived in this state for 22 days by November 3). But this year, you’ll want to have plenty of time to consider your ballot, and maybe a few beers on hand (as well as the 2020 State Ballot Information Ballot, aka the “Blue Book,” that also arrived through the mail) as you dig deep into the issues. In addition to the contests between congressional candidates (the race for the U.S. Senate between Cory Gardner and John Hickenlooper, as well as all seven U.S. Representative seats), you’ll be voting on state legislative races, RTD board seats, judicial retention questions and a slew of municipal questions...
This year seems like a strange time to open an expansive food, drink and live music venue capable of holding more than a thousand guests at full capacity. But Spencer Frank and and Andrew Palmquist have been planning Number Thirty Eight, at 3560 Chestnut Place, for the past two years, and many of their original ideas fit right in with these socially distanced, contact-free days. Number Thirty Eight is the first in planned series of entertainment venues Frank and Palmquist have planned for several states, with Austin, Texas, Portland, Oregon and Columbus, Ohio also in the works. The name refers to Colorado's position as the 38th state to join the Union, and the theme of the place honors the Centennial State's past and present. As a destination, the venue, built from a former neon sign factory, comprises an outdoor stage and volleyball courts and an indoor restaurant with four service counters and two bars that run the entire length of the 12,000-square-foot interior. "We're trying to encapsulate what it means to live in Colorado," Frank states. "We're going to create...

Gov. Andrew Cuomo took another swipe at the NYPD during a conference call with reporters on Wednesday where he said cops 'weren't doing their jobs' enforcing social distancing rules  Gov. Andrew Cuomo took another swipe at the NYPD on Wednesday, this time for not enforcing social distancing rules, after blaming the police department for the fast rising crime across New York City, as he touted his pandemic response book despite widespread criticism of it.  On Wednesday, Cuomo hosted a conference call for reporters instead of putting on his usual daily press conference.  He pontificated about what the NYPD should be doing to enforce social distancing rules at bars and restaurants, then defended writing a book about the pandemic, saying other people had written about him without him.  Asked whether or not he would be donating the proceeds of book sales to charity or keeping them, he hesitated then eventually said: 'I will be making contribution to a COVID-related entity.  'A lot of it depends on whether or not the book sells so I hope you guys buy it.'   Cuomo...
