(CNN)For over 20 years, environmental anthropologist Shafqat Hussain has been working to protect snow leopards in his native Pakistan. Situated in the north of the country, the Gilgit-Baltistan region is home to three of the highest mountain ranges on Earth. This rocky terrain is perhaps "the best snow leopard habitat in the world," according to Hussain. "These magnificent creatures can live at (altitudes up to) 20,000 feet, in rarefied air, in minus 30 degrees centigrade," he says.Snow leopards prey on species like markhor -- wild goats with impressive screw-shaped horns -- and other mountain mammals including blue sheep, ibex and marmots. Their short forelimbs and longer hind legs help them navigate the steep, rocky terrain and enable them to jump up to ten meters. But despite being so well adapted to their mountain home, snow leopards are under threat. According to Zillow, the number of listings dropped 42.4% from January 2020 to January 2022.  Because of that, prices are soaring. Los Angeles recorded the most hate crimes among large U.S. cities last year, posting a 71% jump in the incidents, a study found. Data gathered by the Center for Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino show there were 615 hate crimes reported to police in Los Angeles city in 2021 — the third-highest annual total in any U.S. city since the 1970s. Incidents targeting Black people in Los Angeles were the most common and jumped 91% over 2020, the study concluded. While Black residents make up about 8% of the city’s population, they were the reported targets in 148 alleged hate crimes — a rate nearly triple their share of the population. In most other large cities, Black people were also the most targeted group. An exception was New York City, where Jewish people were victimized most frequently. “The invective on the internet of hate is being followed by vile acts on the streets,” Brian Levin, the Center’s executive director, said in an interview. Other major cities across the U.S. also saw sharp increases in...
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Russian troop movements near Ukraine’s border that have ratcheted up fears of a potential invasion have complicated the international political scene to a degree not seen in decades, Poland’s president said Friday. President Andrzej Duda said the situation is “difficult” and reminiscent of 1989 when Moscow-led communist rule collapsed in Central and Eastern Europe. Duda said that the “security, sovereignty and freedom” of neighboring Ukraine and Belarus are of great, “strategic” importance to Warsaw. Duda spoke after talks with top national security officials and political leaders at a National Security Council meeting to discuss heightened tensions along Russia’s border with Ukraine which has long sought to join Western political and military structures and alliances. Before the meeting, Duda said there were “no direct military threats to Poland right now.” Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday that Moscow will not start a war in Ukraine but warned that it wouldn’t allow the West to trample on its security interests. Russia has amassed more than 100,000 Russian troops near Ukraine. On Thursday, Poland’s lawmakers adopted...

Fans have rushed to social media to praise Paul Judd as 'better loooking than ever' after he won People's Sexiest Man Alive title this week - and pictures prove he's barely aged since hitting our screen three decades ago.  The actor became a household name as Cher's unlikely heart-throb in 1995 hit Clueless, playing Alicia Silverstone's awkward ex-stepbrother Josh Lucas, aged just 26. And this week the Hollywood star, 52, won People's Sexiest Man Alive title, reigniting the much debated topic of how he manages to look so young. The father-of-two has barely aged since making his screen debut as a fresh-faced 22-year-old in a 1991 Nintendo advert, before starring in 1992 drama series Sisters, where he played a supporting role as aspiring filmmaker Kirby Quimby. Showing off an almost line-free face as he appears on the cover of People magazine with the hashtag #crushforlife, Paul looks almost identical to when he hit our screens three decades ago.  And while Tom Cruise, 59, sparked filler rumours when he appeared at a baseball game in San Francisco recently looking fuller-faced, Paul Rudd's...
Axios raised eyebrows on Friday over its analysis of the GOP backlash of President Biden's vaccine mandate.  In its report headlined "America's civil war of 2021," Axios co-founder Mike Allen marked the "public uprising" among "top Republicans" in response to Biden's new COVID policy, stressing that it comes "eight months after more than 500 people stormed the U.S. Capitol to try to overturn the election." "It has been decades since America has witnessed such blatant and sustained calls for mass civil disobedience against the U.S. government," Allen claimed.  LIBERAL MEDIA EMBRACES BIDEN'S COVID POWER GRAB AFTER REJECTING TRUMP'S THREAT TO OVERRIDE GOVERNORS LAST YEAR Among the "top Republicans" Allen cited were Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance, who called for "mass civil disobedience" in response to the president, and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who told Fox News' Sean Hannity, "My legal team is already working."  Critics sounded off on Axios, particularly Allen's assertion that "it has been decades since America has witnessed such blatant and sustained calls for mass civil disobedience against the U.S. government." ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A heat wave scorched southeast Europe on Thursday, sending residents flocking to the coast, public fountains and air-conditioned locations to find some relief. Temperatures rose above 40 C (104 F) in parts of Greece and across much of the region. Weather experts in Athens said they expected the heat wave to extend into next week, making it one of the most severe recorded since the mid-1980s. Cooling shelters were set up in the Greek capital, but access to the air-conditioned public spaces was limited by pandemic restrictions. “The ongoing heat wave is a dangerous weather phenomenon, as it will last until the end of next week with a small temperature range between maximum and minimum levels,” said Theodoris Kolydas, director of Greece’s National Meteorological Service. Authorities in Serbia, Bulgaria and other affected countries advised people to avoid exposure to direct sunlight in midday hours. Wildfires in Greece threatened homes for a third successive day, with a blaze reported Thursday outside the western city of Patras. Copyright © 2021 The Associated Press. All rights reserved....
Life expectancy in the United States fell by a full year during the first half of 2020, a new report finds. In 2019, life expectancy - or the average number of years a person lives - for the general American population was 78.8 years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed on Thursday. However, based on provisional death counts between January 2020 and June 2020, this figure fell to 77.8 years. This is the lowest that life expectancy has been since 2006 and the biggest drop seen in two decades. Some of the decline can be attributed to common causes of deaths such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and lung disease, as well as overdoses. But the toll of the pandemic cannot be understated with more than 347,000 dying due to COVID-19 last year in addition to indirect pandemic deaths. Life expectancy in the U.S. fell a full year from 78.8 years in 2019 to 77.8 years in the first half of 2020, with males seeing a drop from 76.3 years to 75.1 years and women seeing...

THE natural world is currently going through its sixth mass extinction event, with human activity pushing thousands of species of animals to the brink of total annihilation every year. But amid the catastrophe, moments of hope come in the form of species once thought to have been lost forever being rediscovered decades later. 16The incredible Voeltzkow’s chameleon was recently rediscovered after not being seen for a centuryCredit: AP:Associated Press The most recent resurrection is the "lost" Voeltzkow’s chameleon which no one had seen for over 100 years. Researchers found the colour-changing critters in the garden of the Chez Madame Chabaud hotel in the Madagascan town of Mahajanga. The three males and 15 females are the first to be discovered by humans since 1913. Voeltzkow’s chameleon is featured on the Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC) list of the 25 "most wanted" lost species. 16Female Voeltzkow’s chameleons can change colour depending on their moods and the number of red dots on their sides varies by individualCredit: AP:Associated Press “The Voeltzkow’s chameleon adds colour and beauty to the planet, and reminds us...
By RACHEL LA CORTE, Associated Press OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington state saw its highest primary turnout in more than five decades, with 55% of the state's 4.6 million voters returning ballots for last week's election, setting the stage for a potential record-breaking turnout in November. Cornell Clayton, director of the Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy at Washington State University, said the high turnout indicates a heightened level of fear among voters in both parties. “I think the level of concern — because of polarization and because of the Covid economic crisis the country is in — is going to drive record levels of engagement across the nation,” he said. The final turnout number won't be known until next week, after county canvassing boards have reviewed any ballots that have been challenged over issues like signatures or postmarks. As of Tuesday night, current turnout based on the number of ballots processed to date was at nearly 53%, with about 50,000 ballots left to process. Voter turnout in the state primary is usually low, and turnout in 2016 was...
