CHICAGO (CBS)– As Black History Month winds to a close, we’re shining the spotlight on another community hero. Carlos Nelson, a proud son of Auburn Gresham, is selflessly restoring the shine to a crown jewel of the South Side. While meeting with CBS 2’s Ryan Baker a coffee shop, customers came up to Nelsen, knowing his name, and called him, “the man.” “You know, it’s genuine, it’s authentic,’ He said. “I’m not one of those guys that just sits in the office, I pound the pavement.” Nelson has been pounding the pavement as the CEO of the Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corporation for nearly two decades. “I always like to say I haven’t worked a day in 19 years because this isn’t work when you’re working with your community,” Nelson said. The mechanical engineer walked away from the lucrative corporate world to pay it forward in the South Side neighborhood where...

Wednesday was a great night for Auburn basketball and their fans. Auburn beat their SEC rival LSU on the court and a fan wowed the crowd by triumphing over a Rubik’s Cube in mere seconds on national TV. The pressure built as ESPN cameras were glued to the fan’s hands and the surrounding crowd exuded anticipation to see if he could complete the task. ESPN producers had to be equally on the edge of their seat. The cameras would be forced back to the game at some point, but we also needed to know if the unnamed fan would finish the puzzle. Realistically, most of the at-home audience was more interested to see the Rubik’s Cube outcome than they were to catch Auburn’s free throw attempt while leading LSU by 14 points. But producers never needed to make the decision. Wearing a Phoenix Suns jersey featuring Auburn alumnus Charles Barkley, the fan shuffled the puzzle and tossed it in the air to celebrate defeat of the Rubik’s Cube on national television. But he wasn’t done, with cameras still on him,...
"I love you." … Alabama football coach Ray Perkins to kicker Van Tiffin moments after his 52-yard field goal as time expired to upset No. 7 Auburn, 25-23, on Nov. 30, 1985, in front of 75,808 at Legion Field in Birmingham. And I was in love at first sight at age 24. That was my first Iron Bowl in person. I was the Alabama beat writer for the Montgomery Advertiser, which had about half a dozen people covering the game. Tailback Bo Jackson gained 142 yards on 31 carries and scored two touchdowns against an Alabama defense with linebackers Cornelius Bennett and Derrick Thomas and despite – it was revealed later – two cracked ribs. He won the Heisman Trophy a week later. It was Perkins’ second straight win over Auburn and put his unranked team at 8-2-1, while Auburn fell to 8-2. Perkins had lost his first one as coach in 1983 after replacing Paul "Bear" Bryant, which somewhat explains the love part. Perkins then fell to 4-6 in 1984 for the Tide’s first losing season since 1957 –...

NORTH AUBURN (CBS13) — Authorities say they arrested an Auburn man twice in one day, both times on suspicion of theft. Back on the morning of Oct. 14, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office says they got a report about someone seen stealing from mailboxes along Linda Drive in the North Auburn area. The suspect was also reportedly seen stealing tools out of a truck. Deputies got to the scene and say they found that the suspect, 33-year-old Auburn resident David Fuchs, had stolen mail from more than 25 people. About $1,500 worth of tools were also stolen from the truck, deputies say. Reed says she saw the suspect in his car asleep before his first arrest. “We end up over here and we see a guy from the county [and] he said there was a break-in over there,”...
The SEC has many great college football rivalries, but only one can be deemed the oldest. Of all the storied college football rivalries that make the SEC so great, it starts with the first one. Dubbed the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, the Auburn Tigers have played the Georgia Bulldogs almost annually since 1892. Auburn won the first game over Georgia 10-0 taking place at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. While it has pretty much alternated from Auburn to Athens since 1959, this rivalry has played games in Atlanta, Columbus, Macon, Montgomery and Savannah as well. With the exception of five times between 1893 and 1943, this game has been played annually.SEC football: What is the oldest college football rivalry in the conference? To date, Georgia holds the all-time record over Auburn at 61-56-8. Georgia has won the last four meetings dating back to the 2017 SEC Championship game in Atlanta. The Dawgs have the longest winning streak over Auburn at nine games from 1923-31. Auburn has the most lopsided victory in the rivalry series with a 44-0 shutout over the Bulldogs way back...
It has been a minute since the last time the Auburn Tigers beat the Georgia Bulldogs in football. While the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry is one of the best games on the SEC schedule annually, the Georgia Bulldogs have had the upper hand on the Auburn Tigers for quite some time. Though Georgia holds a narrow 61-56-8 lead through 125 games, the Dawgs have won the last four meetings, seven of the last eight, 13 of the last 16 and 15 of the last 22 meetings since 2000. Even if Auburn has not win in Athens since 2005, they have won a few times at Jordan-Hare over the Dawgs in recent years. So when was the last time the Tigers actually beat them in football? Auburn’s last victory over Georgia was not that long ago, but also not that recently for them either.Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry: When was the last time Auburn beat Georgia?Though Georgia has won four straight over Auburn, the Tigers’ last victory over the Dawgs came four years ago. How is that possible? This is because the...
California State Parks on Thursday unanimously approved a controversial plan that will allow up to 142 new campsites to be built in a crowded, wildfire-prone park northeast of Sacramento. The new general plan will allow the building of up to 135 individual campsites and seven group sites within the Auburn State Recreation Area, which occupies 40 miles of steep river canyons and rugged terrain in drought-stricken El Dorado and Placer counties. The long-term plan faced vehement opposition from residents of the Sierra Nevada foothills and from several local fire agencies who argued that new campsites will increase the fire danger for visitors and nearby residents. Numerous small towns near the park can be accessed by only a few steep mountain roads, leaving few evacuation routes if disaster strikes. But State Parks said campsites have been proposed as an attempt to manage overcrowding and make the park safer. “The pressures on public lands are greater than we have ever seen,” California State Parks Director Armando Quintero said during the virtual meeting of the state’s Park and Recreation Commission....

Auburn football head coach Bryan Harsin had a lot to say about quarterback Bo Nix’s performance in the Spring Game on Saturday. If Auburn football wants to find their feet quickly under new head coach Bryan Harsin, the Tigers need quarterback Bo Nix to turn a corner. Of course, there will be time for Harsin to nitpick the performance after he takes a look at the tape. For the time being, he didn’t have much to complain about. The junior quarterback has spent the last two years as a starter making plays with his legs but trailing where he needs to be as a passer and game manager. He followed up his nine-win freshman campaign with a 6-5 record in 2020 while throwing just 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions. His quarterback rating for the season ranked ninth in the SEC. AUBURN (CBS) — Authorities are warning Central Massachusetts residents of an increase in reported thefts of off-highway vehicles, particularly dirt bikes. Both state environmental and Auburn police issued statements Monday about the rise. “The APD and other area departments have taken numerous reports of ATV / dirt bike thefts in the last few months,” Auburn police said. “The thefts are primarily occurring in the early morning hours when the owners are asleep.” Police said that in most cases, the victims had listed the bikes for sale on the internet and social media sites, such as Facebook Marketplace. “We want to remind everyone to use caution when posting classified ads and be aware that it is fairly easy to find addresses etc out through the Internet,” Auburn police said. Environmental police are advising dirt bike and ATV owners to store them securely with a chain when possible, and consider storing them with no fuel or remove the spark plugs. Auburn vs. Texas A&M is the best college football game of the upcoming weekend. AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn University said it will offer a new doctoral degree in building construction that will one one of only a handful of such programs nationwide. An announcement released last week said the program will start when the fall semester begins on Aug. 17 as part of Auburn’s College of Architecture, Design and Construction. The school described the program as a research-based degree that will emphasize emerging and important areas of building construction. The program will be one of seven such programs nationwide, the school said. Students will take an average of three years to complete the program, which aligns with a degree in building sciences and will require 62 semester hours of graduate course work beyond a bachelor’s degree. They were taken to the hospital with symptoms of heat stroke where Avalena Conway-Coxon was pronounced dead. The second child, who was 22 months old, was in a coma for several weeks and suffered lifelong injuries, according to the district attorney’s office. The state medical examiner was unable to determine the cause of Avalena’s death. A review of the case by the state Department of Children and Families found a “policy breakdown” that led to the licensing of the foster home. It could not immediately be determined if Malpass had an attorney. (© Copyright 2020...
