The position of lady-in-waiting has been scrapped at Buckingham Palace, bringing to an end a centuries-old tradition. Combining the roles of companion, adviser and secretary, ladies-in-waiting played a key part in Royal life, accompanying the late Queen and her sister Princess Margaret on official duties and foreign tours. But in a sign of the new Queen Consort Camilla’s unfussy approach, they will be replaced by six aides styled ‘Queen’s Companions’. Last night the Palace named them as Sarah Troughton, Jane von Westenholz, Fiona the Marchioness of Lansdowne, an interior designer, Lady Katharine Brooke and Baroness Carlyn Chisholm, a Conservative peer. The sixth is Camilla’s close friend Lady Sarah Keswick, whose husband, Sir Chips Keswick, retired as chairman of Arsenal football club in 2020. All have been loyal to Camilla (right). The Queen Consort is set to dispense with the centuries-old tradition of having ladies-in-waiting as part of her retinue. Camilla, 75, thinks having a smaller number of staff is ‘more with the times’ – and her approach fits in better with the King’s vision for a leaner monarchy. Dr. Susan Baur, an 81-year-old avid swimmer, decided she had seen enough trash at the bottom of ponds in Cape Cod, so she wanted to do something about it. About four years ago, she formed a group affectionately called “Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage”, or “OLAUG” for short. They’ve been pulling trash from some of the 996 fresh water ponds on the Cape ever since. “It’s kind of a treasure hunt for stuff that’s not supposed to be there,” Baur told WBZ-TV. Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage cleaned up Deep Pond in Falmouth in November 2021. (WBZ-TV) She and her group have pulled all kinds of things out of ponds from golf balls to dog toys to beer cans and Gatorade bottles. The oddest thing she’s ever found? A garden gnome! “A treasure on land ceases to be a treasure when it’s under water,” Baur said. There are a few requirements to consider when joining...

Mutton dressed as lamb’ was the phrase fierce grannies would mutter when middle-aged women dared to dress younger than their years, shunning the attire expected of them in favour of girlish clothes. Funny, then, that on screen nowadays we are more often than not faced with the exact opposite — lambs dressed as mutton. Or playing it, at least. Beautiful young, fresh-faced women, cast as characters sometimes decades older than them because, presumably, a correctly aged actress wouldn’t be as pleasing on the eye. The latest film to shoehorn a lovely young actress into a much older role is The Dig, a Netflix creation charming viewers with its mix of Anglo-Saxon history and sweeping Suffolk landscape — the soothing balm we need in our recent troublesome history.
