Outraged, people around the country began sending her donations—and they’ve already raised more than half a million dollars. Pieper Lewis was 15 years old when she fatally stabbed Zachary Brooks, then 37, after he raped her repeatedly over the course of weeks in 2020. Another man had allegedly been trafficking her after finding her homeless; that man had forced her to go over to Brooks’ house by holding a knife to her throat. The police arrested Lewis a day after the killing, and prosecutors charged her with first-degree murder. Last year she pleaded guilty to lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter and willful injury, crimes that are each punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Her sentencing hearing was on Tuesday. Polk County District Judge David Porter ordered Lewis to serve five years of probation, noting that she already...
A California school district was ordered to pay $1 million to a teen who was bullied but ignored by school administrators who allegedly lied about calling the police after learning of a petition started by other students calling for her death. Eleri Irons, now 18, filed the lawsuit in 2019 after she suffered ruthless bullying at El Segundo Middle School that included a petition started by other students titled 'Let's kill Eleri Irons' and left her self-harming and a case of PTSD.  She was targeted by the group between the ages of 13 and 15.   Even after finding out about the petition, teachers failed to notify Eleri's parents. The tormented schoolgirl sought refuge from the from the bullying by spending every lunch break in the nurses' office.  Irons' attorney, Christa Ramey, said that even after Irons' parents found out about the bullying and asked school officials to help, they 'dismissed the concerns as drama over a teen love triangle.'  Melissa Gooden, then-principal at the middle school, reportedly lied about calling the police as she learned of the petition calling for...
Pasadena Unified School District officials were found negligent and ordered this week to pay $26 million to a former special-needs student who was sexually assaulted by three classmates. The attack happened on May 17, 2016, when the female student was 11 years old, according to the complaint. She and a group of her classmates at Focus Point Academy in Altadena were briefly left unsupervised outside their classroom when, according to court records, three classmates sexually assaulted her after one of the boys said, “It’s rape time.” In a statement, the victim’s attorneys blasted the school district and its attorneys, saying the school district continued to deny not just that the district had been negligent, but that the attack had even occurred. “This verdict demonstrates that all children, regardless of their disabilities, deserve to be protected,” David Rudorfer, an attorney representing the victim with the firm Panish Shea Boyle Ravipudi, said in the statement. The House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack is now in possession of a trove of text messages from conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' cellphone, it was reported on Monday. CNN reports that lawmakers on the bipartisan panel were handed two years' worth of correspondences to and from Jones, as they draw links between the US Capitol riot and Donald Trump and his allies' attempt to overturn the 2020 election. The panel reportedly obtained the texts from lawyer Mark Bankston, who is representing the parents of a 6-year-old killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The parents won a lawsuit against Jones last week after he repeatedly decried the massacre as a 'false flag' and claimed the children who were killed are crisis actors, in addition to a host of other inappropriate remarks about the shooting. Jones was ordered to pay nearly $50 million to the two families in punitive and compensatory damages. A spokesman for the January 6 committee declined to comment when asked by DailyMail.com. Bankston apparently caught Jones by surprise when he revealed during...
Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones immediately took to the airwaves after the verdict in his defamation trial on Friday - which will see him be forced to pay nearly $50million in damages to the family of slain six-year-old Jesse Lewis.  Lewis was among the 20 children who were shot dead by crazed gunman Adam Lanza at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012. Another six people were killed in the massacre. For years Jones claimed on his InfoWars platform that the shooting in Newton was a 'false flag' operation perpetrated by the US government to further gun control. In his Friday broadcast, Jones claimed the trial against him was 'coordinated and run' by billionaire philanthropist George Soros and 'operatives.' He did not identify the other 'operatives' by name. The host also accused Judge Maya Guerra Gamble of being a 'blue-haired SJW' and insinuated that she was corrupt by saying that she 'altered the record of the trial.' 'SJW' stands for Social Justice Warrior.  In his Friday broadcast, Jones claimed that the trial against him was 'coordinated and run' by...
Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has been ordered to pay $45.2 million in punitive damages to the family of slain 6-year-old Jesse Lewis, one of the 26 people were shot dead in the Sandy Hook massacre.  That's in addition to the $4 million the InfoWars host was ordered to pay yesterday.  In his closing statement, the lawyer for the victims' families said: 'Alex Jones is worth almost $270 million that we know of. Please take an amount that punishes him, and an amount that ensures he never does this again.' This is the first of three trials that Jones will face in relation to his claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax.  Two others are set for September, one in Texas and one in Connecticut, where the shooting took place. A total of eight families will be represented in the Connecticut trial.   Alex JONES attempts to answer questions about his text messages asked by Mark Bankston (not shown), lawyer for Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, during trial at the Travis County Courthouse Wednesday Aug. 3, 2022  'We ask that you...
Conservative conspiracy theorist Alex Jones begged his viewers to donate to him on Thursday after he was ordered to pay more than $4 million to the parents of a child killed in the Sandy Hook massacre, which he once claimed was a hoax, as an economist testifies in court that he and his company are worth $270 million. In a video posted Thursday to Infowars.com, Jones said the amount he's ordered to pay is 'more than my company has [and] more than I personally have,' claiming 'we are so broke.' Jones told viewers it's their responsibility to keep him and his company afloat, saying in the video 'if you don't fund us... we will shut down' and telling them 'it's your decision' whether Infowars shuts down. He added the company 'can barely keep the crew employed' due to their financial issues, but his website was found to have made over $800,000 a day during their peak in 2017, though Jones called that their best day ever.  Alex Jones released a video asking his viewers to help fund him, and said...

A jury in Florida has found Tesla just one percent negligent in a fiery crash that killed two teens, for disabling a speed limiter on the electric car, but still ordered the company to pay the family $100,000. Tuesday's verdict placed 90 percent of the blame on the driver, Barrett Riley, 18, and 9 percent on his father, James Riley, who brought the lawsuit against Tesla. It's the first known case involving a Tesla crash that has gone to trial, said Michael Brooks, acting executive director at the Center for Auto Safety, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization.  Riley and his friend Edgar Monserrat Martinez, 18, were about to graduate from their private school in South Florida when they died in the May 2018 crash near Fort Lauderdale Beach. A backseat passenger was ejected and survived. Barrett Riley's family were awarded $100,000 by a jury after they sued Tesla over their son's fireball death. A Louisiana mother who was raped at 16 by a 30 year-old-man has been ordered to give up custody of their daughter - and pay him child support.  Crysta Abelseth's life forever changed in 2005 after she accepted a ride home from John Barnes, now 46, when her friend decided to leave dinner early, Hammond local news station WBRZ's investigative team first reported.  'Instead of bringing me home, he brought me to his house. Once inside, he raped me on his leaving room couch,' Abelseth, 32, told the outlet.  Overcome by trauma and unsure of what to do, Abelseth let friends and relatives  believe that the pregnancy - a byproduct of the rape - was instead the result of a relationship she had at the time.   Abelseth welcomed a baby girl and moved on with her life - until her alleged abuser found out about their then-five-year-old daughter in 2010.   Barnes, the owner of a digital branding site, then began a legal battle against Abelseth to obtain custody rights.  But despite filing a sexual assault report against Barnes in 2015 and fiercely fighting to...
However, an arbitrator reversed the school's decision and ordered UCF to give Negy his old job back and pay him the salary that he missed after being fired. “At some point in 2020 a furor erupts over tweets from his twitter account, activity not related to his duties and also is protected free speech,” arbitrator Ben Falcigno wrote in his Arbitration Award opinion on May 16. “There ensues a campaign by UCF to find out more about Dr. Negy’s classroom performance as related by his students. UCF reaches out to previous students, gets a number of responses and determines that serious misconduct has been occurring for years, lamenting that no system for detecting such misconduct existed to alert management to such disrepute. A Tennessee man who took a sip of water at a Cracker Barrel in 2014 only to realize he had just swallowed a corrosive kitchen cleaner was awarded $9.4 million by a jury, far above the $150,000 he originally asked for. William Cronnon was awarded $3.6 million in non-economic damages, such as pain and emotional distress, and $730,000 in economic damages by a Marion County jury on January 6. The jury also awarded him $5 million in punitive damages, according to court documents. 'The jury returned a verdict for compensatory damages of $4.3 million in just 30 minutes - one of the fastest verdicts we have ever seen - and awarded punitive damages of $5 million after only 10 minutes of additional deliberation,' Cronnon's lawyer Thomas Greer told CNN. 'The speed of the verdict, combined with an amount in excess of what we asked, speaks to just how dangerous the Cracker Barrel policy was,' Greer said.  However, Cronnon is unlikely to receive the whole sum based on a Tennessee law that caps compensation for punitive and non-economic damages at $750,000....

Russia has been ordered to pay £105,000 in damages to Alexander Litvinenko's widow after European judges ruled the state is responsible for his 2006 murder.  The European Court of Human Rights issued the ruling today in response to a claim brought by Marina Litvinenko, the ex-KGB agent's widow, in November last year.  'Russia was responsible for the assassination of Alexander Litvinenko in the UK,' a ruling issued by six of the seven-member Strasbourg court said - with the sole Russian judge dissenting.  Litvinenko, a prominent critic of the Kremlin, died aged 43 in London after drinking green tea laced with Polonium 210 at the plush Millennium Hotel in Mayfair.   Britain has long blamed the attack on Russia, saying he was poisoned by Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun. The ECHR agreed with that assessment.  But Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman, was quick to dismiss the findings - calling them 'unfounded' and adding: 'We are not prepared to accept such decisions'.
