Luis Robert hit a towering fly to left field on the second pitch of his sixth-inning at-bat against Cleveland Guardians reliever Nick Sandlin on Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field. Would it be fair or foul? Robert stood in the box, leaning while hoping it would stay fair for a two-run homer. At the same time, acting manager Miguel Cairo jumped out of the dugout to get a better view of the ball. It kept curving and landed foul. The at-bat ended in a strikeout for Robert, who went 0-for-5 in the 10-7, 11-inning loss. The center fielder, who dealt with left wrist soreness before suffering a bruised left hand, was out of the lineup Wednesday and did not start again Thursday against the Guardians. The Sox trailed the Guardians by six games in the American League Central with 13 to play entering the series finale. “He’s still a little sore but he wants to play,” Cairo said before the game. “I said, ‘Let’s see how it feels (Friday) and we’ll go from there.’ ” Robert has started just six of...
The Chicago White Sox announced the surprising news less than an hour before the first pitch of an Aug. 30 home game against the Kansas City Royals. “At the direction of his doctors, Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa will miss tonight’s game vs. Kansas City,” the Sox said in a statement. “La Russa is scheduled to undergo further medical testing tomorrow in Chicago. Bench coach Miguel Cairo will manage the club in La Russa’s absence.” The Sox lost 9-7 that evening but have been one of the hottest teams in baseball since with nine victories in 12 games. La Russa went to Arizona for further evaluation and received clearance from his doctors to participate in a ceremony honoring former pitcher Dave Stewart before Sunday’s Sox-Oakland Athletics game at the Oakland Coliseum. La Russa has not been cleared to return to the dugout in an active managing role, saying Sunday when asked about his expectations to be back: “A lot of it is going to depend on the experts. … It’s uncertain.” La Russa told Janie McCauley of The...
The Houston Astros are sitting pretty in the division and as a whole, but they’ll finish the 2022 season without a veteran bat in the lineup.  It’d be hard for the Houston Astros to have much of a complaint about anything at this point of the season. The club is sporting an 11-game lead in the AL West over the Seattle Mariners — despite that team surging — and has the best record in the American League as a whole as they’ve overtaken the Yankees. Yet, as the Astros are clearly on a trajectory to not just make the playoffs but also go on a deep postseason run, the latest injury update out of Houston is at least minorly alarming. On Friday, the team announced that veteran outfielder Michael Brantley underwent surgery and will be out for the rest of the 2022 season. Astros outfielder Michael Brantley underwent an arthroscopic labral repair on his right shoulder, the team announced. He’s out for the season. — Robert Murray (@ByRobertMurray) August 12, 2022 Astros: Michael Brantley out for season after undergoing shoulder...
Twenty-eight players have been hit by at least four pitches during the 2022 Major League Baseball season. Five of them play for the Mets. What started as a quirky but painful oddity is no longer funny. The Mets started the season by getting hit 18 times in the first 19 games, putting them on pace to shatter the single season mark. Entering play on Wednesday, they’ve been dotted up 40 times in 58 games, still putting them on pace to break the record of 105 hit by pitches set by last year’s Reds. In late-April, as the hit-by-pitch barrage showed no signs of slowing down, Mets manager Buck Showalter said, “It’s painful, and it’s also scary. You got less than a second to react.” That must be how the team felt on Tuesday night as yet another pitch struck a Mets’ batter. Unfortunately, this time the pitch could have a much bigger impact than helping the team chase a record they do not want. Yu Darvish’s 95 mile per hour sinker bit Pete Alonso on the right hand, taking the...
The last thing the struggling Chicago Cubs need is catcher Willson Contreras sidelined by an injury. Contreras was not in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Cincinnati Reds, still considered day to day while nursing a tight right hamstring. However, manager David Ross was confident Contreras won’t go on the 10-day injured list. “We’ll give him a couple of days to rest up, but, yeah, he’s good,” Ross said. “Status quo.” That would be the best outcome after Contreras exited Saturday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third inning after feeling something in his hamstring when he stole second base. Teams can backdate a player on the IL up to three days, making Tuesday important for Contreras’ progress if he indeed will avoid the IL. While the Cubs want Contreras, their hottest hitter, in the lineup, there’s no reason to rush him back. Hamstring issues have bothered Contreras in the past, landing him on the IL in 2017 and 2019. This type of injury can be particularly troublesome for a catcher with the flexibility and movement needed...
BALTIMORE — After playing 13 straight games, Aaron Judge was out of the starting lineup for Monday night’s series opener against the Orioles at Camden Yards. It is a preventative maintenance day, according to Aaron Boone. ”I was kind of targeting one day on this trip. I considered the [Sunday] day game [in Chicago] and he kind of powered through that. …” the Yankees manager said. “Just kind of decided this was a good day.” He explained that between the day game, then traveling to Baltimore for a night game that Judge would get a day and a half to rest. Judge is leading the majors with 12 home runs and is slashing a ridiculous .296/.369/.632 with a 194 OPS+. This is part of the workload management that the Yankees hope will not only keep Judge healthy this season, but Giancarlo Stanton and the rest of their roster. Considering they are in the middle of playing 23 games in 22 days — their next scheduled off day isn’t until May 30 — Boone is keeping an eye out to give most...
The Chicago Cubs’ middle-infield depth is being tested. Nico Hoerner is day to day with right ankle soreness after exiting Wednesday’s win in San Diego following a collision with second-base umpire Dan Iassogna in the second inning. Hoerner is still being evaluated after initial imaging Wednesday did not show a fracture. Seiya Suzuki’s status also remains day to day because of lingering right ankle soreness. The right fielder pinch hit in the ninth inning Tuesday but did not play Wednesday. Suzuki took batting practice Friday. Coming off Thursday’s day off, neither Hoerner nor Suzuki was in the lineup for Friday’s series opener at the Arizona Diamondbacks. Manager David Ross indicated they were available off the bench, though given Hoerner’s ankle continues to get checked out, he likely won’t be a first option. Hoerner’s absence thins the Cubs’ middle-infield options. Nick Madrigal went on the injured list Tuesday with a low back strain. Meanwhile, shortstop Andrelton Simmons is not yet ready to join the team from his rehab assignment. He will play nine innings Friday and Saturday at Triple-A Iowa. Ildemaro...
Thirty minutes after Nico Hoerner helped the Chicago Cubs secure a season-opening win, manager David Ross met the shortstop at his locker. Hoerner had put the Cubs ahead midway through the game with a two-run home run, his first since 2019, en route to their one-run victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. But Hoerner was not in the lineup for Friday’s game, which was postponed because of inclement weather. Instead, Ross opted to start Jonathan Villar at shortstop, giving Hoerner the day off. That served as the motivation for Ross to meet with Hoerner after Thursday’s game. Ross wanted to let him know the plan for the next day and the big-picture approach. “It’s just about communicating to those guys and making sure I’m getting ahead of that,” Ross said. “The other thing that I try not to do, one of my things is if you go deep the day before you’re not sitting the next day, so I told him that, like, ‘Hey, you hit a home run today, and I’m going to go against everything in...
In the months since Ayo Dosunmu’s first start in December, the Chicago Bulls rookie became a regular feature in the primary rotation. But in the final weeks of the regular season, coach Billy Donovan has moved Alex Caruso into the starting lineup, bringing Dosunmu back into a reserve role. Donovan hopes the shift will help the Bulls bolster their defense after an immense slippage in ball protection sparked a slide from first to fifth in the Eastern Conference. The move will also changes expectations for Caruso and Dosunmu as the Bulls attempt to even out their results in the final three weeks before the postseason. “Since Alex had his legs under him a little bit, I thought just starting off with that group defensively could give us a little bit better energy,” Donovan said. “Bringing Ayo off the bench will bring his energy into the game as well.” Dosunmu, 22, was a crisis choice for the Bulls at point guard, brought in to fill the position after Caruso and Lonzo Ball suffered long-term injuries during the same week in January....

The Los Angeles Lakers face a difficult hurdle early in the 2021-22 NBA season as LeBron James remains sidelined with an abdominal strain.  LeBron James has already had an up-and-down start to the 2021-22 season, as has his Lakers team. After an embarrassing loss to the 1-6 Oklahoma City Thunder the last time they played on Oct. 27, the 5-3 Lakers will host the Thunder tonight at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. News emerging out of the Lakers locker room indicates that the Los Angeles team will be without the help of LeBron James for longer than expected. While James has already been ruled out of playing in Thursday’s home game, the abdominal strain James is currently dealing with will apparently keep him off the court for at least another week. According to ESPN NBA reporter Dave McMenamin, “a source familiar with the injury told ESPN that the team’s medical staff ‘wants to take their time’ with James’ recovery.”LeBron James set to miss more time with abdominal strainJames, who turns 37 on Dec. 30, has already missed two of the...

Major League Baseball managers aren’t that important. Until October, that is. Then they are vital. The difference, on any given night, between exactly and heartbreak. Giants fans know all about this important distinction. Three World Series flags fly in the outfield as a testament to Bruce Bochy’s lineup and bullpen management. The Giants’ showdown with the Dodgers in the NLDS is Gabe Kapler’s first playoff series as a manager. Going into it, no one knew what to expect. Let the Giants’ pivotal 1-0 win in Game 3 in Los Angeles stand as a testament to Kapler’s aptitude. In a game where the margin couldn’t have been tighter or the stakes higher, the Giants’ second-year manager pulled all the right strings. Yes, folks, he’s got this. From his pregame decision to keep Evan Longoria in the lineup, betting that the veteran third baseman would overcome the terrible slump he’s been mired in for weeks, to his bold but justifiable bullpen decisions, Kapler was an active part of the Giants’ victory. And while...

The dominican Juan Soto was excluded from the lineup of Washington Nationals this Friday due to a pain in a knee in the middle of the season of the MLB. Juan Soto he scored a run last Thursday and told his manager Dave Martinez that he felt a discomfort in one knee. The Washington Nationals They proceeded to examine him the next day and without any warning, they removed him from the lineup. Everything indicates that he needs rest to deal with this pain, at least today he was not available against the Philadelphia Phillies. However, Martinez said that Juan Soto he could swing and that he was available from the bench, but only if the moment warranted it. Now definitely Juan Soto He is the most feared hitter in the Nationals, the departure of Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber has left him without offensive backup and he has no choice but to do what he does best, hit the ball and put the pitchers to work. South Korea and Japan Emerge as Key Battlegrounds in the Streaming Wars Heres how much money Americans in their 30s have in their 401(k) accounts You might remember the 1998 New York Yankees. Great team. Won 114 games and the World Series at the peak of a stable, generational dynasty. And if you remember the team, you probably remember its starting lineup. Derek Jeter was the shortstop, of course. Who was the center fielder? Bernie Williams! And the second baseman? Chuck Knoblauch. The exercise is just as frictionless for the 2001 Seattle Mariners, winners of a record 116 games but not the World Series. The 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers exceeded their lofty winning percentages in a pandemic-shortened year, and still share that time capsule quality — a familiar, durable core of names and faces. What they don’t share is the Sporcle-ready, round-peg-round-hole way of ticking off how the pieces fit together. Who’s the center fielder? Well, so usually … it’s mostly Cody Bellinger, who also plays first base but is on the IL right now. OK, the second baseman?...
Giancarlo StantonNYPost composite: Getty Images Panic! Panic! Just kidding, it’s three games into a 162-game season. The Yankees lost two of three games to open the season against the Blue Jays in The Bronx. The bats didn’t do much, but they did get six dominant innings out of the bullpen Sunday from Michael King. Shockingly enough though, Giancarlo Stanton was booed by some Yankees fans…on Opening Day. He then was not in the lineup on Sunday. Should fans boo a player this early, and should Stanton be getting a day out of the lineup so soon? The lineups for Game 6 between the Dodgers and Rays are officially out Following Chris Taylor’s blunder in Game 4 and a pulse-pounding win in Game 5 of the 2020 World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a chance to clinch the series if they can take down the Tampa Bay Rays one more time. Tampa Bay, however, isn’t out of pixie dust just yet, and winning the next two isn’t out of the question. You have hits and misses when buying new weed. Lately, I've had a lot of misses. The weed itself has been fine, but my reaction to it — slow, groggy and despondent — has not been. Maybe this is a by-product of limiting myself to pre-orders out of ’rona fear and not engaging with budtenders before making my purchase (not that we're allowed to smell before we buy now anyway), or maybe my body is just changing; lord knows the shape of it has. Being the cheapskate that I am, though, an in-store-only sale was the only thing that was going to drag me inside a dispensary. And that's when I thought I'd found my dream strain for curing my weed woes. Initially presented with a lineup of potent OGs and Cookies varieties, I asked the budtender for something that was more on the straight-and-narrow path for daytime use but still flush in the flavor department. She pulled out something from the corner with the name Tangerine Dream. Although she wasn't very enthusiastic while describing it as a...
