(Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images) The New York Mets are playing well but they still have a few issues with their roster construction. The New York Mets have been a great team for the entire season. They have the second-best record in the entire sport at 73-40 and they have been even better recently. They have won 15 of their last 18 games. That’s partially due to making some good additions at the trade deadline in first base/DH Daniel Vogelbach, outfielder Tyler Naquin, first baseman/outfielder Darin Ruf, and reliever Mychal Givens. Their biggest ‘acquisition’ was their ace Jacob deGrom, though. deGrom hasn’t been healthy in over a year but he is finally back as he returned on Aug. 2 (coincidentally, trade deadline day) and he...

(Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images) The New York Yankees have hit a bit of a skid recently and part of that is due to their roster construction. The New York Yankees have the best record in the American League on the season but in their last 47 games, they are under .500 at 22-25. A lot of that is due to their roster construction and some of their players coming back down to earth after having extraordinary starts to the season. As always, the club is dealing with a lot of injuries so their depth is very thin but some of their depth pieces should be called up to help turn around their recent fortunes and, perhaps, even help them win the World Series.Yankees: 3 roster moves to help their World Series odds3. NEW YORK (AP) — Marcus Eliason, an international journalist whose insightful reporting, sparkling prose and skillful editing graced Associated Press news wires for almost a half-century, has died. He was 75. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, developed pneumonia earlier this week at a nursing home, and died on Friday in a New York hospital, his family said. From Israel and the 1967 Six-Day War to apartheid-era South Africa and on to Afghan battlegrounds, bloody Belfast, the Iron Curtain’s fall, the handover of Hong Kong and countless other datelines and stories, Eliason witnessed and reported on some of the great world events of the 20th century’s final decades. And when that century drew to a close, it was the Eliason touch that greeted the new one. “From East to West and North to South, the world welcomed the new millennium in a shimmering tapestry of song and light that rippled around the globe,” he led off AP’s main article on January 1, 2000. By then he had moved on to his final posting, from which he retired in 2014,...
If Speaker Nancy Pelosi was feeling nervous about the global political fall-out from her trip to Taiwan, she may have taken some of the edge off a few days earlier by shopping in Hawaii and picking up some elegant cashmere scarves. TMZ posted video Wednesday of Pelosi taking a break on her way to Taiwan to stroll through the posh Royal Hawaiian Resort in Honolulu this past weekend. The famous pink resort on Waikiki Beach boasts a number of high-end shops, including Pashma, which says it is “world-renowned” for its collection of handcrafted cashmere scarves and knitwear. The video showed Pelosi in the boutique, which appeared to have been cleared of other customers for her shopping convenience. A large contingent of security officers, dressed casually in Hawaii-appropriate street clothes, stood outside the shop, while the congress member from San Francisco looked through the racks at different garments. Nancy Pelosi just touched down in Taiwan for a big show of defiance toward China — an ominous trip that she apparently needed to prep for … with some island window-shopping. https://t.co/JIlM5rksgS —...
CBS News wrapped its reporting about the death of Al Qaeda leader Ayman Al Zawahiri by reminding viewers those who participated in or planned the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks are now all either dead or in jail. Meanwhile, the site of the most devastating terror attack in U.S. history is thriving. Network anchor John Dickerson reported the news of Zawahiri’s death via drone strike. After some analysis, he wrapped the report and sent CBC affiliates across the country back to their regularly scheduled programming. First, he offered a reminder: We leave you with a look at lower Manhattan and One World Trade Center. All those that plotted the attack are either dead or captured. One World Trade stands as the tallest building in the western hemisphere. A reminder of the resilience of New York City and the American people. As he spoke, CBS shared the beauty of Manhattan’s skyline with One World Trade towering magnificently 1,792 feet in the sky. While New York recovered from 9/11, as Dickerson noted, those who planned and carried out the attack have been destroyed. Zawahiri,...
The images are haunting. Two pairs of sisters, side by side, frozen in time with the dead-eyed stare of a passport picture. U.S. News & World Report also credits NYU Langone with the No. 1 Neurology & Neurosurgery department in the country, among 14 other nationally ranked specialties, six of which also made the top 5 list. Earlier this year, NYU Grossman School of Medicine ranked No. 2 in the nation for research on the 2022- 2023 U.S. News & World Report “Best Graduate Schools” list.  The combination of the US News rankings position NYU Langone as the top academic health system in the country devoted to patient care, education, and research.  “This recognition is reflective of one standard of care (one hospital provider number) that is consistently supported by our faculty and staff across each of our hospitals,” says Robert I. America is set to have the worst monkeypox outbreak in the world within days, statistics suggest as cases surge amid ramped up testing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has detected 3,487 cases of the tropical disease as of Tuesday, behind only Spain with 3,596 confirmed infections. Infections in the U.S. are rising by 216 per day on average — compared to 108 in Spain — pointing to the country likely overtaking its European peer at some point this week. Dr Bill Hanage, an epidemiologist at Harvard University, told DailyMail.com that the surge in testing was picking up transmission chains that had continued uninterrupted for 'some time'. He said it was 'reasonable' to suggest the outbreak in America will 'outpace' those elsewhere. The U.S. population is seven-times that of Spain's — with 329million inhabitants — and the country also now carries out more testing than many others, which is set to push its cases tally ahead of those in other nations. The above graph shows the cumulative tally of cases in the US, and the current total compared to...
(CNN)After everything Donald Trump has done -- from his seemingly open embrace of bigotry to his failed handling of Covid-19 (which polls show most Americans were critical of) to his efforts to thwart democracy -- it's hard to believe that anything could siphon off the support of the former President's die-hard acolytes. Dean ObeidallahBut a new editorial published by the New York Post, "Trump's silence on Jan. 6 is damning," should worry him, given the newspaper's reach with a loyal pro-Trump audience and its status as one of the crown jewels of Rupert Murdoch's media empire. The conservative-leaning daily is not some random anti-MAGA publication; rather it gave Trump a full-throated endorsement when he ran for reelection in 2020 while saying a Joe Biden administration "would be beholden to a socialist left."The New York Post is a tabloid that reaches Trump voters where they are. A letter written in 1780 by Alexander Hamilton that was thought stolen for decades has finally returned to Massachusetts, where it will be displayed at the Commonwealth Museum. The letter was stolen by a former Massachusetts State Archives worker during World War II and then sold privately; the employee was arrested in 1950. According to court papers, the letter is worth around $25,000. The letter had gone missing along with other documents relating to George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Paul Revere, though those have been recovered. The employee had removed the index reference numbers from the letters before selling them to rare book dealers. After the Hamilton letter popped up in a Virginia auction house in November 2018, a researcher realized it had been reported missing, and the long-lost document was reported to the FBI. The state of Massachusetts then won a lengthy court battle with the South Carolina family trying to sell it and retrieved the letter, and it will now be shown just in time for July 4. The New York Yankees and New York Mets are on a collision course to headline another World Series as the AL and NL champs — just like they did in 2000.  Although World Series champions alternate throughout the years, there are a few MLB franchises who consistently rank among the best in the league. In New York, there have been two baseball teams to represent both ends of the victory spectrum. The New York Yankees are historically the winningest MLB franchise with 27 titles, and they haven’t missed the postseason since 2017. The Mets, on the other hand, are virtually the opposite: they’ve won two World Series titles in nine postseason appearances in their 60-year history, hence their “LOLMets” moniker. In true LOLMets fashion, the NL East New Yorkers dashed their postseason hopes right at the end — but things might be different this time around. Anthony Rizzo compared the New York Yankees to the 2016 Chicago Cubs New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo spent part of 10 seasons with the Chicago Cubs and, arguably, his best season came in 2016, when the Cubs won the World Series, breaking their 108-year World Series championship drought. The NFL franchise will be sold to the Walton-Penner family subject to approval by the league. 3Denver Broncos have agreed a sale worth a massive $4.65bnCredit: AP And the eye-watering sum is the highest ever paid for an American sports franchise. It tops the $3.2bn that NBA's Brooklyn Nets were sold for three years ago - and is more than double the $2.28bn that NFL's Carolina Panthers cost in 2018. The Broncos will be brought from the Pat Bowlen Trust after the owner died in 2019 aged 75. The franchise was valued at $3.75bn by Forbes last year - the 10th highest NFL franchise valuation. But the sale price almost a billion dollars higher than that figure catapults them into the top 10 sports teams in the world. The Philadelphia Phillies fired manager Joe Girardi on Friday morning, with bench coach Rob Thomson to replace him on an interim basis. On Friday, word broke that Joe Girardi had finally been relieved of his duties. The now-former Philadelphia Phillies manager was under pressure in the demanding city and perhaps rightfully so after the team started the season 22-29, putting them a robust 12 games out of first place in the NL East, trailing the New York Mets. In the interim, bench coach Rob Thomson will helm the Phillies. Philadelphia was expected to compete in the division alongside New York and the defending World Series-champion Atlanta Braves, but despite having a +1 run differential, couldn’t find themselves over the first two months of the season. However, Philadelphia is still within shouting distance of a playoff berth with two-thirds of the campaign left, only trailing the final wild card spot by 5.5 games. As for Girardi, one wonders if this is his final stop. A three-time World Series champ as a catcher with the New York Yankees, Girardi won another title...

VENEZIA may have lost enough games to be relegated this season, but they managed to win hearts by being the "world's most fashionable club". Share this: New York Harbor was once filled with billions of oysters, providing a feast for the native Lenape people — and then the Dutch, the English and New Yorkers of all stripes. Some biologists estimate that the harbor once contained half of the world’s oysters, according to New York Public Library. Writers from colonial times routinely describe oysters “the size of dinner plates” in Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal. The delicious bivalves were sold from street stands, taverns and restaurants. An oyster-fry cook at Downtown Brooklyn’s Gage & Tollner restaurant, which opened in 1879, was said to have shucked sixty-six million oysters in his forty-nine-year career, according to the New Yorker. It all came crashing down around 1900, due to overfishing, dredging and pollution from the raw, untreated sewage the city dumped into the harbor. One by one, the New York City Health Department closed the remaining oyster beds, and the city’s time as the oyster capital of the world was over.
In this article AAPLCustomers shop at the new Apple Store at the World Trade Center shopping mall in New York City.Getty ImagesCommunications Workers of America is accusing Apple of violating federal labor law at its World Trade Center store in New York City. CWA alleged in an Unfair Labor Practice filing with the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday evening that Apple interrogated and surveilled staff, restricted them from posting union fliers and made them attend mandatory anti-union speeches. The charge, filed Wednesday evening, comes as Apple employees at several stores around the country are taking steps to unionize, including in New York's Grand Central Station, Atlanta and Maryland. They follow a wave of unionization efforts at companies like Amazon and Starbucks. "Apple retail workers across the country are demanding a voice on the job and a seat at the table. Unfortunately, and in contradiction to its stated values, Apple has responded like a typical American corporation with heavy-handed tactics designed to intimidate and coerce workers," Tim Dubnau, CWA's Deputy Organizing Director, said in a release announcing the filing. He quickly confirmed with the U.S. Coast Guard that the tanker Exxon Valdez had struck a reef and was leaking oil into Prince William Sound. (Photo by Mitchell Layton/Getty Images) The New York Yankees seem to always be in World Series contention, but they have some holes that could keep them from serious consideration this season. The Yankees made some key moves between the end of the lockout and the beginning of a shortened Spring Training. Anthony Rizzo signed a two-year contract with the Yankees worth $32 million. He can opt-out after this season. In 16 games he’s hitting .250/.382/.571 with an wRC of +181 and five home runs. He has taken over at first base for the Yankees. The Yankees traded with the Minnesota Twins to acquire Josh Donaldson who is in the penultimate season of a four contract worth $92 million. There is also a mutual option for 2024....

(Photo by Eric Espada/Getty Images) What are the three biggest obstacles keeping the New York Mets from winning the World Series in 2022? The New York Mets look about as close to unbeatable as any team in the National League. New York spent big over the offseason and it would appear as though the roster is as good, if not better, than any in the league. The Mets added Mark Canha, Starling Marte, and Max Scherzer prior to the lockout. New York has an imposing lineup and an even more intimidating starting rotation. But, did Sandy Alderson and Billy Epler spend enough of Steve Cohen’s money to being a World Series title to Queens? Cohen certainly hopes so, and the Mets fans are starved for a World Series Champion. New York hasn’t been to the Fall Classic since 2015 and hasn’t taken home the Commissioner’s Trophy since 1986. What holes might remain as...

The New York City Mayor's Office received backlash after posting a video of a subway train pulling into a station just hours after 10 people were shot and 23 injured in Brooklyn.  The Mayor's Office tweeted the video calling NYC the 'greatest city in the world' just 13 hours after the tragic mass shooting in Brooklyn's 36 Street Station during rush hour traffic on Tuesday.  The video showed a 6 train pulling into an unknown station late at night, despite the fact that subway crimes are up more than 60 percent. The 6 train was not affected by the Brooklyn shooting.  Angry New Yorkers took to Twitter to criticize the office's tone-deaf message, telling them to 'read the room' as the last thing they wanted to see was a subway train.  'Maybe not the best day for a subway post…' Twitter user Michael White wrote.  'Y’all have some nerve tweeting this…' another user agreed.   'Last thing I wanna see is a subway train on my feed. Poor taste. Love to see my taxes NOT at work,' a woman named Nat...
It was Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, who ordained ‘you can never be too rich or too thin’. She was talking about women, but it increasingly seems she might have been referring to skyscrapers. A battle of multi-millionaire one-upmanship created Manhattan’s skyline and its new addition once again takes the breath away. More than a quarter of a mile high but no more than 60 ft wide, the Steinway Tower, which has opened for residents, isn’t just exceptionally tall, it is almost painfully thin. And to live there you have to have the sums that even the Duchess probably never imagined.  It’s not only one of the tallest buildings in the western world; with a height-to-width ratio of 24:1 (that is, 24 times taller than it is wide), it is the world’s skinniest skyscraper. ‘These are not the proportions of a classical column but of a coffee stirrer,’ a critic sniped. Here, Tom Leonard offers a bird’s eye view of the latest must-have for those living the high life . . .  More than a quarter of a mile high but...
CINCINNATI (AP) — Costa Rican defender Ronald Matarrita had ankle surgery and will miss the World Cup playoff against New Zealand in June. Major League Soccer’s Cincinnati team said Friday that Matarrita will be sidelined for at least six months, which could cause him to miss the World Cup if the Ticos reach the tournament. Matarrita was hurt during a World Cup qualifier against Canada on March 24 and had surgery on Monday in New York. The 27-year-old has made 49 international appearances. He missed the 2018 World Cup because of a hamstring injury. Cincinnati also said 21-year-old midfielder Ben Mines will be sidelined for at least six months following ankle surgery on Tuesday in New York. Mines was hurt during training while on loan to the Colorado Springs Switchbacks of the second-tier United Soccer League’s USL Championship. ___ Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. Mayor Adams was rooting for the home team Friday — even though he isn’t really a tried and true fan. Adams, an avowed Mets supporter since the team’s early days, said he’d be pulling for the Yankees before they took the field on Opening Day against the Boston Red Sox — the preferred choice of his predecessor, former Mayor Bill de Blasio. “I want a Subway Series, you know? Let’s keep the money right here in New York. A championship team brings millions of dollars in revenue, it hires the restaurant workers and everyone that feeds off of the economy from tourism,” he said during an appearance on Brian Lehrer’s show on WNYC. “So we want the Yankees and Mets in the World Series.” During de Blasio’s eight years as mayor, the city’s then-top Red Sox fan refused to set foot in Yankee Stadium, making an exception to that rule only once when he announced the ballpark would be used as a COVID vaccination site in February 2021. Adams is a Mets fan, and while he said he was rooting...

Aroldis Chapman is well aware that the New York Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009. Despite spending roughly half of his big league career in pinstipes, New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has not had the success in October he has envisioned there since initially coming aboard in 2016. Though Chapman has a World Series championship on his resume, that came when he was traded to the Chicago Cubs at the deadline in 2016. He returned to the Big Apple in free agency in 2017 and has been there ever since. While the Yankees have made the postseason each of the last five years, they have not advanced any further than the ALCS on any occasion. It has been frustrating. Chapman perhaps summed this up with one perfect quote, “I thought winning a World Series would be easier with the Yankees.” "I thought winning a World Series would be easier with the Yankees" ???? https://t.co/bCcTSLjsR7 — Talkin Yanks (@TalkinYanks) March 30, 2022 Aroldis Chapman’s World Series take on the New York Yankees is a brutal one There are...
