TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Tiger Woods clenched his jaw when the pain hit. He limped, occasionally used a driver like a cane, and pushed his rebuilt right leg over and through the hills and swales of Southern Hills on Friday with a singular mission: to get to the weekend at the PGA Championship. And he did it. Woods shot a second-round 1-under 69 that put him at 3-over par for the tournament, one shot inside the cut line. He was in danger of missing the weekend before rallying with two birdies over the final six holes. “You can’t win the tournament if you miss the cut. I’ve won tournaments — not major championships, but I’ve won tournaments on the cut number,” Woods said after he gingerly walked the few steps up to the stage for his post-round interview. “There’s a reason why you fight hard and you’re able to give yourself a chance on the weekend.” Few consider that a realistic scenario the way Woods has to fight his body to get through a round. MIAMI (AP) — There’s nobody on the Miami Heat roster that knows Philadelphia guard James Harden better than P.J. Tucker. They got further acquainted in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Tucker set the tone of the night for Miami by playing full-court defense against his former Houston teammate, then kept doing more and more dirty work in his 28 minutes. His final numbers — 10 points and seven rebounds — didn’t come remotely close to completely measuring the impact he made in a 106-92 win for the Heat over the 76ers on Monday night. “It’s what I do,” said Tucker, a big part of Milwaukee’s run to an NBA title last season and now someone trying to win another ring with Miami. “Just trying to change the game, affect the game without scoring, figuring out a way to win the game. That’s it.” Sounds simple. It isn’t. Tucker was the ringleader of a defensive corps that held Harden to a 5-for-13 shooting night from the field, 1 for 4 in the second half, hardly the numbers that Philadelphia...
BOSTON (CBS) — A guard has not won the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award in 26 years. Marcus Smart has made a strong case and has recently emerged as the favorite to take home that hardware, and now he’s got an all-time great in his corner. Gary Payton, whose smothering defense during the ’90s earned him the nickname “The Glove,” was the last guard to win DPOY back in 1996. He’d like to see Smart end the draught for the position this season. READ MORE: Red Sox, Yankees Start Season In Explosive Fashion On Opening Day“He plays hard, plays with a lot of dog in him, and I think that, yes, he should win it,” Payton said in an interview on SirusXM NBA Radio. “Why not? He has changed a lot of things in a lot of games.” Payton said that Smart does a lot of the things that he used to do when he was shutting down opposing offenses. Smart is fantastic at pressuring ball-handers all the way up the floor — or turning a guard three...

HARRY MAGUIRE admitted it is 'embarrassing' that Manchester United went 139 corners without a goal. By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — A few weeks have passed since the Buffalo Bills’ season ended following one of the most incredible football games that’s ever been played. The rest of the country and the NFL has moved on, but the pain in Buffalo will likely stick around for a long while. That’s why Bills quarterback Josh Allen made sure to take a moment on Thursday night to express a commonly held belief in the Buffalo area right now about the NFL’s current overtime system. When NFL Honors host Keegan-Michael Key took a seat next to Allen for one joke set-up, the quarterback delivered a scripted yet sincere line. “This is so much fun,” Key said. “A show like this, you just want it to go on and on and on and on and on. Am I right, Josh Allen?” Allen then butted in: “Or, you just end it in a way that makes sense, is fair, and gives everyone an equal opportunity to win.” Allen then turned to the camera and shrugged. Josh Allen knocked this one...
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Zach Wilson threw a touchdown pass and ran for another to outduel Trevor Lawrence, and the short-handed New York Jets used a goal-line stand at the end of the game to hold on and beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 26-21 on Sunday. It was the fourth matchup of rookie quarterbacks taken with the first two picks in the draft — and the No. 2 selection came out on top. Pete Davidson took center stage in one of the few new sketches for this week's episode of Saturday Night Live. The 28-year-old comedian, who was seen earlier in the evening catching a movie in New York City with Kim Kardashian, starred in a hilarious black-and-white sketch inspired by classic Christmas films, as well as Robert De Niro's performance in Raging Bull (1980). Pete played an overweight version of himself decades into the future, with an audio-only appearance by Weekend Update host Colin Jost, who was replaced by Tina Fey after he sat out the show amid reports that multiple cast and crew members tested positive for COVID-19. BOSTON (CBS) — Monday night’s Patriots-Bills game was not a pretty one. It was downright ugly at times thanks to a blustery wind that made throws either fly well away from their target — or not be attempted at all. Monday night was certainly one of the most unique football games anyone will ever see, as Mac Jones and the Patriots attempted just three passes. But the lack of throws didn’t mean much, as the Patriots gutted out a 14-10 win over their division rival. We knew the Patriots were a running team, and we knew that they’d be pounding the ball a lot heading into the game. But come on! Three pass attempts is a bit ridiculous. Ridiculous or not, it worked. The offensive line was incredible and New England’s running backs found the holes that they provided. The Bills knew the Patriots were running the ball, and they still couldn’t stop it. The Patriots have now won seven straight and remain the top seed in the AFC heading into their bye week. The Bills, meanwhile, just lost a...
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Matt Cross blocked a 3-pointer and made a 3-pointer in the final minute, Louisville scored the game’s final nine points and the Cardinals defeated NC State 73-68 on Saturday in the ACC opener for both teams. After Louisville’s Noah Locke hit a 3-pointer that tied the game at 68 with 1:33 to go, Cross blocked a 3-pointer attempt by Jericole Hellems then buried the go-ahead 3-pointer from the left corner with 28 seconds to go. Cam Hayes missed a 3-pointer for the Wolfpack with 12 seconds left and Jarrod West capped the scoring, making two free throws with 7 seconds remaining. North Carolina State (6-2) did not score after a 3-pointer by Hellems with 3:02 to go had given the Wolfpack a 68-64 lead. They missed 10 of their last 11 shots. Malik Williams led Louisville (6-2) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Cross had 13 points with seven rebounds and made 3 of 6 3-point tries. Locke scored 12 points, all on 4-of-8 3-point shooting. Wakeem Page returned two fumbles for touchdowns in his latest game for Cathedral Prep. One of them landed on SportsCenter after he legitimately stole the football thanks to perfectly reading the play, and impeccably timing the rush. With his team already leading 34-7, the junior defensive end anticipated the snap to Meadville’s quarterback and crossed the line of scrimmage just in time to steal the pitch that was intended for a running back. Well, it really comes down to the players around him on offense. Patrick Mahomes is still the quarterback, but this time around Mahomes has an offensive line that looks...

MADRID (AP) — Young Barcelona playmaker Pedri was called up for Spain’s senior national team for the first time on Monday. He was included in the 24-man list announced by coach Luis Enrique for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Greece, Georgia and Kosovo. The 18-year-old Pedri, touted by some as the heir to Barcelona great Andrés Iniesta, has been a regular in Spain’s youth squads. He has been starting for Barcelona under coach Ronald Koeman this season. “Pedri is an ambitious player but he plays with tranquility and clarity,” Luis Enrique said. “He has the ideal qualities to play in the midfield. He has the characteristics to play well both defensively and in attack. We have been watching him for some time. He can add a lot to the team. I’m looking forward to seeing him with us.” Another newcomer called up was 23-year-old Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, who has been doing well in the Premier League after playing last season on loan at English third-division club Rochdale. Kristen Stewart adds details of her personal style to Princess Diana’s look while filming in Germany. The American actress is already fully camouflaged with the character of Diana but can’t put aside her beloved Adidas sneakers while taking a break from filming. The 30-year-old star has a style very opposite to that of any member of royalty, especially that of a future queen, however she knew how to transform herself into one of the most iconic women in the world. Just a week ahead of the Festival of Whales, which celebrates the gray whales’ annual migration past the Dana Point Headlands, a frisky humpback decided to steal the show. Capt. Steve Burkhalter aboard the Ocean Adventures got quite a sight on Tuesday, Feb. 23, about three miles off the beach near Three Arch Bay. The Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching captain got word of a humpback sighting from a private boater just as he returned to Dana Point Harbor with an earlier charter. He tossed the intel to his colleague, Capt. Tommy White on the Dana Pride, who reported back he saw the large whale near the headlands’ point. When Burkhalter got out there, several other boats, including another private boat, were on scene. Burkhalter, familiar with humpbacks from working charters in Hawaii for six years, idled his boat and the whale approached. “I had a feeling it was a friendlier whale,” he said. “It went on a deep dive for a minute or two and came up again just off the bow. Then it made a turn toward...

Getty Lamar Jackson sacked by the Colts in 2020. The Baltimore Ravens haven’t had an easy time of things in 2020 on the offensive side of the ball, and Lamar Jackson might have an idea why that’s the case. As Jackson admitted, the team’s offense has run hot and cold so far this season, but the reasoning for that might have everything to do with the fact that the opposition has a better idea of what’s coming this season than in other years past. Jackson joined The Rich Eisen Show and explained that he feels as if folks have a bead on what’s coming this season, so much so they are calling out plays or citing what to look out for before the plays officially come to fruition. #Ravens QB @Lj_era8 says opposing defenses are calling out our plays at the line of scrimmage via @richeisen on the @RichEisenShowpic.twitter.com/yOnXB6GcfW — Dov Kleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) November 11, 2020 Jackson said: “We had our ups the first week, and then we had our downs. Getty Lamar Jackson fires a pass against the Colts. The Baltimore Ravens have one of the better records in the AFC, yet it still feels as if there is something pedestrian about the team in 2020. Lamar Jackson’s play has been far from the MVP level it reached in the 2019 season. Even still, the quarterback is doing some nice things and captaining his team to a 6-2 record thus far. Despite that, Jackson could be getting more than his fair share of guff for the team’s inability to win the biggest games on their schedule thus far. Actress Gillian Anderson has just discovered something extraordinary about the job she has been doing for the last 35 years: turns out that “acting” involves pretending to be someone you are not. Anderson made this belated discovery while playing her latest role as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the epic Netflix series The Crown. As she is at pains to emphasise, Anderson does not remotely share the Conservative leader’s politics. She tells Harper’s Bazaar that it was all she could do to stop herself complaining that the script — written by her boyfriend Peter Morgan — didn’t go in hard enough on Mrs Thatcher’s supposed political failings: At times, she says she found herself questioning the portrayal – why wasn’t there more on the poll tax or Northern Ireland? But she was given no special treatment as the writer’s partner to shape her character. “For our own sanity, and actually for the benefit of the relationship, we had very clear boundaries,” she says. “I am not going to comment on the script, but you are not allowed to comment on the...
Getty Kenny Golladay makes a catch against Atlanta. The Detroit Lions have one of the NFL’s best weapons in Kenny Golladay, and he continues to prove that to be the case week to week. Against the Atlanta Falcons, Golladay showed off another amazing catch for his highlight reel. Drifting to the sideline, Matthew Stafford fired a pass which could only be described as low percentage to Golladay. He went up and made an incredible catch, while also taking a major thump on the play. Amazingly, Golladay hung on to the ball all the way through the play. While they settled for the field goal, they wouldn’t have even been able to do that good had Golladay not been able to make this amazing play. Kenny Golladay’s 2020 Stats Golladay started out slow this year, but has come on...
Getty Matthew Stafford throws a pass in the Lions-Jaguars game. Matthew Stafford has made a habit of uncorking the big pass deep down field in his Detroit Lions career, but he’s also been excellent at making the unexpected amazing play on the field as well. Early in the first half against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6, Stafford uncorked an impressive sidearm pass to tight end Jesse James. The pass looked like a low percentage throw, but it ended up being scooped up and moved forward as the team was driving early in the game deep in enemy territory. Here’s a look: If Mahomes makes this throw the announcers cream their pants for 10 minutes pic.twitter.com/VFzvb8o5Ef — Isaac (@WorldofIsaac) October 18, 2020 A few plays later, Stafford and the Lions were in the end zone and had captured an early 7-0 lead against the Jaguars. Without this pass, the Lions likely don’t march down the field and get close enough to convert for the score, so this was an important play in the grand scheme for Detroit....
Caught by Canha. ???? pic.twitter.com/IcHiobzdb9 — MLB (@MLB) September 30, 2020 Mark Canha made what may turn out to be the play of the game Wednesday as the A’s faced the Chicago White Sox in Game 2 of their American League first round playoff series. Canha had time to talk about it, too, as he played left field the following inning. In the top of the third inning with runners on first and second, Yoan Moncada sent a Chris Bassitt changeup deep to left field. But Canha leapt and caught the ball against the wall, preventing at least one run from scoring. Bassitt then worked his way out of the jam in the do-or-die playoff game, getting Yasmani Grandal to pop out on a change up and Jose Abreu to fly out to center. Then in the fourth inning with the White Sox back at the plate, Canha gave an interview to ESPN’s Dave Flemming and Jessica Mendoza that lasted throughout the half-inning. No balls were hit to Canha while the interview...
Highlights from Saturday’s Jets practice: Truly Blessed CB Bless Austin made a magnificent play to intercept QB Sam Darnold in the end zone. Austin was guarding WR Breshad Perriman on a fade route during a red-zone period. The ball was slightly under-thrown and Austin was able to pull it in. The second-year cornerback has been making plays. Growing pains The offense struggled for the second straight practice. The group looks like it is still in the learning phase. Some plays look slow to develop, and there are chemistry issues with the unit that has seven new starters from the end of last year. Caught my eye WR Lawrence Cager is hard to miss. The undrafted rookie stands 6-foot-5 and is 220 pounds. On Saturday, he made two touchdown catches on jump balls. Cager has an uphill battle to make the roster, but he made an impression in this practice. Medical report The Jets got some good news with LB Avery Williamson, TE Ryan Griffin and TE Daniel Brown all getting activated. DE John Franklin-Myers (groin) was a new...
This Day in Yankees History: Derek Jeter makes “The Dive” By: John Zarnowski July 1, 2020 Follow ESM On Social Facebook Twitter Youtube Flipboard Instagram ShareTweet0 SharesNew York Yankees’ captain and superstar Derek Jeter has accomplished so much during his 20 years wearing pinstripes. Besides the five World Series championships Jeter won in his career and the 14 All-Star games, there were many things that separated him from the rest of the league. There are several distinct plays that Jeter made that showed his absolute hustle for the team. It’s been 16 years since one of the most famous plays in his career was made, and Yankee fans haven’t forgotten it one bit. In the 12th inning against the Red Sox, Trot Nixon hit a popup down the left-field line. With two outs and two runners on, the ball would have landed in fair territory and those runs would have scored. Jeter had other plans: Catching the ball in fair territory and unable to stop his momentum, Jeter flies into...
