The NFL has released a report revealing that its new 'Guardian Cap' initiative reduced preseason concussions by more than 50%, despite being panned by some players and coaches.   According to data released Wednesday, NFL players mandated to wear so-called 'Guardian Caps' saw drop in concussions by more than half, compared to the average from the last three years. The league required tight ends, linebackers, and linemen on both sides of the ball to wear the soft-shell-esque liners over their helmets from the start of training camp up to the second preseason game. Concussion rates have historically seen increases during that time period. Only 11 concussions were recorded at those positions during the offseason, compared to the previous three-year average of 23. Of those 11 concussions, 6 resulted from hits to the face mask, which isn't protected by the Guardian cap. Getty The Patriots hosted former Bears OL Lachavious Simmons for a visit. Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are showing significant interest in multiple former Chicago Bears players. According to the NFL’s September 13 waiver wire, the Patriots brought in recently-released defensive tackle Micah Dew-Treadway and linebacker Sam Kamara for workouts, also hosting former Bears offensive lineman Lachavious “Pig” Simmons for a visit. The Bears released Simmons from their practice squad on September 12, so the Pats didn’t waste any time giving him a look. Dew-Treadway was waived by Chicago on September 2 and Kamara was released on September 1. Pennel, 31, has been in the NFL since 2014 and entered the league undrafted. He played the first three seasons of his career for the Green Bay Packers, followed by three years for the New York Jets, two years for the Chiefs, and played for the Atlanta Falcons during the 2021 season. Getty Kansas City Chiefs tight end Matt Bushman. The lone transaction for the Kansas City Chiefs on September 7 involved parting ways with a player that stood out during the preseason. After playing with the Chiefs’ division rivals over the summer, Bushman was cut and then added to Las Vegas’ practice squad at the transition of the 2021 preseason to the regular season. Bushman remained in Las Vegas for the majority of the season and was active for the Raiders’ games in Weeks 7 and 13. Getty The Bills' 2022 first-round pick Kaiir Elam (L) may get bumped as the team's starting cornerback after Christian Benford impressed during preseason. The Buffalo Bills made several difficult decisions in order to determine their initial 53-man roster for the 2022 NFL season, but there’s still one more big choice the team must make before the NFL season opener on Thursday, September 8 — which rookie will start at left cornerback. The Bills officially placed Pro Bowler Tre’Davious White on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which means he won’t be suiting up for at least four weeks, and likely longer as he continues to recover from an ACL tear suffered last season. And when Buffalo traded up to select cornerback Kaiir Elam with their first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, it seemed the team found White’s replacement. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier announced in June that they expected the 21-year-old Florida alum to start “right away.” However, the Bills’ sixth-round pick, fellow cornerback Christian Benford, has been so impressive throughout the training camp and preseason...

Getty Mitch Trubisky throws a pass in a Pittsburgh Steelers preseason game. It’s still not official, but one insider believes that Mitch Trubisky is sitting pretty in Pittsburgh after earning the starting job. The former Buffalo Bills quarterback battled with rookie Kenny Pickett for the starting job, and though head coach Mike Tomlin has yet to announce his Week 1 starter, insiders believe that Trubisky has earned the job. Though there has been some speculation as to when Pickett could ultimately take over, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac believes that Trubisky has a strong hold on the job — at least for the immediate future. Getty Defensive end Alex Wright #94 of the Cleveland Browns during the second quarter of a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles at FirstEnergy Stadium on August 21, 2022 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images) The Cleveland Browns may not have been expecting to hit a home run in the 2022 NFL Draft after trading a haul of picks to acquire QB Deshaun Watson. As it turns out, they may have actually hit two. Cleveland didn’t make a selection until the third round, when they picked three players — cornerback Martin Emerson (68th pick), pass rusher Alex Wright (78th pick) and wide receiver David Bell (99th pick). All three are expected to play major rotational roles at their respective positions, though the Browns may have gotten more than they bargained for when they drafted Wright — in a good way. Cleveland is stacked on the edge with All Pro Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney slotted to start at defensive end. However, behind the dynamic duo that combined for 25 sacks last season, the position is troublingly...

(Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images) The Green Bay Packers made off with an absolute haul in the 2022 NFL Draft, but one pick stands above the rest as the regular season draws near. Again one the best teams in the league last season, the Packers found themselves in an unfamiliar position as draft weekend approached — the owners of four selections in the first two rounds. Green Bay ended up picking three players across that span rather than four, bringing in linebacker Quay Walker and defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt in the first round — both out of the National Championship Georgia Bulldogs program — then packaging both late second-round picks to move up to No. 34 and draft wide receiver Christian Watson. Walker is set to start at inside linebacker as a rookie while Wyatt looks to be heavily featured in the rotation along the Packers’ 3-4...

Getty Former Colts QB Jacob Eason worked with Nick Sirianni as a fourth-round pick in Indianapolis for two years. The Philadelphia Eagles are ready to start putting together their practice squad after setting the 53-man roster. There are 16 slots up for grabs as they look to draw from the NFL’s scrap heap. Quarterback remains the most important position to fill. Yes, the easy move would be to bring back Reid Sinnett and let him hone his underwhelming skills by running scout team. They might do that. But the smart money is on scanning the waiver wire and adding fresh talent. General manager Howie Roseman already confirmed that a third quarterback would be signed in the coming days. Here are the top options available: 1. Getty Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Will Grier makes a play during an NFL game. The Dallas Cowboys know who their No. 1 and No. 2 quarterbacks are going to be this season after cutting a former Carolina Panthers QB. Dak Prescott’s place as the team’s starting quarterback for the 2022 season was never in question, but Dallas had a bit of a battle for the pecking order beyond that. Cooper Rush, Will Grier and Ben DiNucci all entered with a chance for the backup job, but only one could take the gig. Dallas is going forward with Rush, and are cutting DiNucci and Grier. Dallas Morning News reporter Michael Gehlken was first to report the news on August 30. “Cowboys waived QB Will Grier, person familiar with move said,” Gehlken Tweeted. “He impressed this summer with his downfield aggressiveness and athleticism while overcoming a groin issue that interrupted an otherwise strong training camp.” Cowboys waived QB Will Grier, person familiar with move said. The Chicago Bears narrowed their roster to 53 players at Tuesday’s 3 p.m. deadline. Here are the day’s moves as the Bears assemble their roster and practice squad for the regular season. Tuesday The Bears are waiving defensive back Thomas Graham Jr., defensive tackle Micah Dew-Treadway and running back Darrynton Evans, and placing Tavon Young on injured reserve. Graham, a sixth-round pick in 2021 by former general manager Ryan Pace, showed signs of promise at the end of his rookie season. But he has missed the entirety of this summer’s training camp with an undisclosed injury and fell out of the team’s defensive plans. It will be interesting to see whether the Bears move to eventually bring Graham back to their practice squad when he’s healthy or if he will have to reboot his career elsewhere. Dew-Treadway, who hails from Bolingbrook and played at Notre Dame and Minnesota, may be another candidate to be brought back to the practice squad when the Bears assemble that 16-player group on Wednesday. Evans, whom the Bears claimed off waivers this spring after he...
The Chicago Bears have to narrow their roster to 53 players before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. deadline. Here are the most recent moves as the Bears assemble their roster and practice squad for the regular season. Tuesday The Bears are waiving wide receivers Isaiah Coulter and Nsimba Webster. Coulter and Webster both were with the Bears in 2021 in limited/practice squad roles. They were part of a large wide receivers competition during training camp that was made more unpredictable by injuries to multiple players. The duo played in all three preseason games. Coulter had eight catches for 112 yards, while. Webster — also a punt and kick returner — had six catches for 46 yards. The Bears also waived rookie Kevin Shaa on Monday. It will be worth watching the statuses of other wide receivers who were in the competition, including Dante Pettis and Tajae Sharpe. The Bears are waiving defensive backs Greg Stroman Jr. and Davontae Harris. Stroman, who has played in 20 NFL games since he was drafted in the seventh round in 2018, was in competition to be...
The Chicago Bears have to narrow their roster to 53 players before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. deadline. Here are the most recent moves as the Bears assemble their roster and practice squad for the regular season. Tuesday The Bears cut offensive linemen Michael Schofield and Lachavious Simmons. Schofield, whose release was reported by NFL Network, is among the more noteworthy cuts. When the Bears signed him, they put him in competition with Sam Mustipher for the starting right guard spot. When Mustipher took over first-team reps at center following Lucas Patrick’s injury, the Bears moved Teven Jenkins from tackle to guard. Jenkins quickly earned first-team reps and Schofield remained with the second team. Schofield, an Orland Park native, has started 81 games over seven NFL seasons. Simmons was a 2020 seventh-round Bears draft pick and has played in two games over the last two seasons. He could be a practice-squad candidate. The Bears are releasing defensive linemen Mario Edwards Jr. and Trevon Coley. Edwards, in his eighth NFL season, spent the last two years with the Bears. He had four sacks,...
Getty Davis Webb #12 of the New York Giants drops back to pass during the second half of a preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals at MetLife Stadium on August 21, 2022 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Former Buffalo Bills backup quarterback Davis Webb, who left the team this offseason to follow former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to the New York Giants, failed to make the 53-man roster. Webb had a previous connection with the Giants, as the franchise initially selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft when Eli Manning was the starting quarterback. The UC Berkley alum spent his rookie year on the practice squad before getting cut in 2018. Getty Head coach Frank Reich and the Indianapolis Colts have reportedly made a decision about whether they are keeping quarterback Sam Ehlinger on the 53-man roster. The Indianapolis Colts will have three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster to begin the season. ESPN’s Stephen Holder reported on August 30 that quarterback Sam Ehlinger “is expected to remain on the final roster” following the final roster cuts the team must make by the 4 pm deadline. Holder also reported the Colts plan to keep Nick Foles as the team’s backup signal caller. Getty Vikings defensive tackle T.Y. McGill was placed on the injured reserve list ahead of the 53-man roster deadline. After leading the NFL with 3.5 sacks in two preseason games, Minnesota Vikings veteran journeyman T.Y. McGill saw his bid to make a 53-man roster end abruptly. McGill left last Saturday’s preseason finale against the Denver Broncos with an ankle injury just three snaps into the game. After an initial ESPN report that said he would be cut, McGill instead landed on the team’s injured reserve list on August 29, per a team release. A player designated to the injured reserve list before the final 53-man roster cutdown cannot return at any point of the 2022 season, per NFL.com, ultimately shutting down McGill’s prospects with the Vikings. Minnesota will decide whether to cut him and reach an injury settlement or rehab the veteran defensive tackle with the prospect of re-signing him next offseason. The Vikings also placed wide receiver Bisi Johnson on the injured reserve list, cut cornerback Tye Smith and waived tackle Timon Parris and wide receiver Myron...

(Photo by Nick Cammett/Getty Images) When it comes to starting quarterbacks, there is really only one domino left to fall across the NFL. As it happens, that domino might fall to the Cleveland Browns. Deshaun Watson is out for the first 11 games of the season, suspended by the league for violations of its conduct policy, and backup Jacoby Brissett is as much of a question as he is an answer under center. Josh Dobbs has looked great this preseason, but the it’s still the preseason, and he’s thrown exactly 17 passes across his entire career in NFL games that count. The Browns front office has said they want two legitimate starters active on their roster at the same time, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. With Watson, they have that. Without him, they don’t. Thus, the prevailing question over the last several weeks has...
Getty Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has tough decisions ahead as the 53-man roster deadline looms on Tuesday, August 30. Amid the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ tough decisions at wide receiver, promising rookie Jerreth Sterns got waived first as final roster cuts commenced on Monday, August 29. Sterns had a promising preseason debut with four catches for 51 yards and a touchdown against the Miami Dolphins on August 13. His production dropped after that as he mustered two catches for 13 yards during the rest of the preseason. The undrafted rookie and former Western Kentucky star led all of Division I in receptions and yards, but his size, 5-foot-9, “works against him more in the NFL”  per Greg Auman of The Athletic, who reported Sterns’ waiver. Getty Former NFL quarterback Brett Farve is inducted into the Ring of Honor during a halftime ceremony during the game between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field on October 16, 2016 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Minnesota Vikings‘ newest quarterback has a legend in his corner. Nick Mullens, acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, has the fast track to take the QB2 job behind Kirk Cousins after an uninspiring showing this preseason from incumbent backups  Kellen Mond and  Sean Mannion. The need to acquire Mullens comes with the hope Cousins doesn’t miss a game. But if the veteran quarterback does miss time, a capable backup who has proven they can win an NFL regular-season game is an important insurance policy to have. Winning is the important quality Brett Favre sees in Mullens. “Nick is a great leader, as well as a student of the game,” Favre told Vikings.com on August 22. “High football I.Q. but most important a winner! Look at his track record, and you will see he has...
Getty Justin Jackson running on the field for the Lions in 2022. After the Detroit Lions signed Justin Jackson earlier this month, most folks probably didn’t give the move a second thought. Detroit was loaded at the position, and it’s not as if the team needed a starter or someone to eat major snaps. Even though that’s the case, Jackson has managed to never stop making plays since joining the team. First, he impressed by making the most of the chances he did get in training camp. Once the scene shifted to the preseason, Jackson hasn’t slowed things down there, either. He’s easily been the most productive Lions back in the preseason and should earn a role on the team. Detroit’s backfield is crowded, but Jackson offers a major plus with his depth of NFL experience. Though he hasn’t been a consistent starter, Jackson has experience in the league and is not overwhelmed by the moment. That could pave a way forward for him in Detroit as a potential third down back. Given what’s behind D’Andre Swift and...
Getty Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich saw one of his young quarterbacks play very well during the NFL preseason. The Indianapolis Colts had decisions to make at wide receiver and left tackle entering training camp. They also had other position battles on offense such as tight end and backup offensive line roles. But no one really expected the Colts to face a decision at quarterback before final cutdown day. That, though, is exactly what Indianapolis now has. Not that that is a bad thing. The Colts must decide whether to keep three signal callers because in addition to offseason acquisitions Matt Ryan and Nick Foles, second-year quarterback Sam Ehlinger played extremely well during the preseason. He played so well, NFL analyst Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report wrote that the Colts suddenly have “an embarrassment of riches at quarterback.” “The offseason acquisitions of veterans Matt Ryan and Nick Foles speak for themselves,” Sobleski wrote. “Ryan is a proven starter capable of leading an entire franchise, while Foles should be considered one of the game’s premier backup options. “Sam Ehlinger...
Getty Ravens WR Demarcus Robinson breaks a tackle in a preseason game on August 27, 2022. The Baltimore Ravens continued and completed their 2022 preseason on a high note with a 17-15 win over the Washington Commanders on August 27, 2022 to extended their historic preseason winning streak to 23 in a row. Plenty of players entered the night with their livelihoods and careers on the line and many of them didn’t disappoint by rising to the occasion for what could be the last taste of NFL action for some of them. Stock Up WR Demarcus Robinson The brightest star on the night for the Ravens was the newest addition to their wide receiver much-maligned wide receiver group. Less than a week after officially signing with the team, Robinson made quite the explosive debut with 135 receiving yards and a touchdown on four catches. Getty BALTIMORE, MD - AUGUST 27: Brian Robinson #8 of the Washington Commanders warms up before the preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium on August 27, 2022 in Baltimore, Maryland. Former Alabama Crimson Tide running back Brian Robinson Jr, who now plays for the Washington Commanders was shot multiple times in an attempted carjacking on August 28, 2022. This was reported by NBC Sports Washington earlier today and it was also reported that the injuries Robinson sustained were non-life threatening.  Robinson was heading into his rookie season after being drafted by the Commanders in the third round of the 2022 National Football League draft. Before turning professional, he played five seasons at the University of Alabama racking up 2,704 yards and 29 touchdowns.  Robinson is currently in stable condition according to reports by NFL Network, and more information regarding his condition and the incident will likely circulate soon. Getty Aidan Hutchinson on the field for the Lions in preseason 2022. While the Detroit Lions were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final preseason game, it wasn’t due to the play of their defense. Unlike last season, the Detroit defense was impressive when the starters were in the game, and showed some tangible signs of growth despite a 19-9 loss on the field. The Lions only surrendered 19 total points on the day, and were bitten by 4 field goal kicks from Chris Boswell. The team’s defense only allowed 57 total rushing yards and was solid on the back end most of the day. Getty Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger played well during the 2022 preseason. Coming into training camp, quarterback was as settled a position as any for the Indianapolis Colts. But after three preseason games, the organization still faces a question behind center before making its final roster cuts by August 30. That question is whether the Colts elect to find a roster spot for second-year signal caller Sam Ehlinger. For Colts content producer and radio host Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan in Indianapolis, that was not an easy question to answer. But when projecting the Colts’ final 53-man roster, he guessed the Colts would find a spot for Ehlinger. “I’ve gone back and forth on this [whether Ehlinger will be on the roster]. I still think the Colts are in a good enough health situation to stash Ehlinger on the 53-man roster as their third quarterback,” Bowen wrote. “When things quiet down on the roster cut front, maybe that’s when you can sneak Ehlinger over to the practice squad.” ALL the latest Colts news straight to your inbox!...

What’s a young, inexperienced quarterback’s best friend as he embarks upon his first season as an NFL starting quarterback? It might be a great tight end, for short, repeatable gains between the number. The 49ers have that. It might be elite pass-catching weapons — big play makers — who can mess a defense up in every way. The 49ers have those guys, too. It might be a top defense, capable of winning a game even when the offense sputters. The 49ers go into this season with one of those. But what about an offensive line that can protect the young quarterback and give him time to not just acclimate to the NFL game, but time to throw the ball to that tight end or big-play receiver? If training camp and the team’s three preseason gamers were indicators of what’s to come in the 2022 regular season, the 49ers do not have one of those. Bengals safety Jessie Bates said playing under the franchise tag this season will give him a chance to show NFL teams — including his current one — what he is worth. The 25-year old Bates reported to training camp on Tuesday and signed a one-year contract for $12.9 million after staying away amid the contract dispute. He said he loves the game too much to sit out for the season, which was his other option. “I’m looking at this as an opportunity to prove I’m one of the best safeties in the league,” he said in his first public comments Wednesday. “I just thought it would be a good time for me to come back a week before the preseason (ends) to be able to start building relationships with guys that just got here, guys that are gonna be making the team these next couple weeks,” he said. Asked why he wasn’t able to reach a long-term deal with the Bengals, Bates said “that’s not my question to answer. It’s a great opportunity for me to present who I...
After a lot of consternation, streaming is finally taking its seat at the NFL table. Amazon Prime Video reportedly agreed to pay $1 billion annually over the next 11 years for exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football, beginning this season. The streaming giant poached a broadcast team from some of its top competitors to signal its arrival in the football space. Al Michaels, a voice long synonymous with the NFL, and Kirk Herbstreit, making his debut as a full-season pro football broadcaster, will be Amazon’s pairing. Their first game is tonight, for the 49ers’ preseason finale against the Texans (also airing in the Bay Area on KTVU, Ch. 2). Michaels’ deal with NBC expired after last season following 16 years of Sunday Night Football broadcasts alongside John Madden and, later, Cris Collinsworth. He was an obvious target for Amazon because fans associate him with big-time games going back to his days on Monday Night Football and even preceding that. Even though it’s a different platform, the one thing I think you can count on is that we are not going...
Getty After months of battling it out between Drew Lock and Geno Smith, the Seattle Seahawks finally named a starting QB. The Seattle Seahawks have been dealing with a chaotic quarterback competition between Drew Lock and Geno Smith. After an entire week of speculation as to who would start the preseason finale, head coach Pete Carroll finally revealed the starting QB. Appearing on the Mike Salk Show on Seattle Sports 710AM, Carroll announced that Smith would be the starter for the preseason finale against the Dallas Cowboys. He also mentioned that while Smith would start, Lock would get significant playing time for the remainder of the game. Smith was the starter for the preseason opener against Pittsburgh, and while Lock was expected to start the following game against Chicago, the competition took an unexpected turn when the young QB tested positive for COVID-19. Now, Lock will have gone the entire preseason without an opportunity to start for the Seahawks in a preseason game. The competition has been fierce between Seattle’s two quarterbacks, but signs are pointing to Smith...

Getty Tyrod Taylor could feature with the first-team offense when the Giants face the Bengals in preseason. Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor will likely split snaps when the New York Giants host the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 of the 2022 NFL preseason. Taylor is slated to be Jones’ backup this season, but new head coach Brian Daboll will be keen to see if his deputy quarterback could handle more of a workload if needed. The Giants signed Taylor in free agency as valuable insurance for Jones, who has missed 11 games through injury during his three-year pro career. Both Jones and Taylor can expect to be tested by last season’s AFC Champions, who run a defense that sends pressure from multiple angles. So does Giants defensive coordinator Don ‘Wink’ Martindale. He arrived from the Baltimore Ravens this offseason after suffering the indignity of seeing his unit shredded for 82 points in two games against the Bengals last season. Getty Trey Lance's status for the 49ers vs. Vikings in preseason has been determined. Trey Lance won’t get the chance to make an impression as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Lance won’t play after having his fill of the Vikings during recent joint practice sessions. Those practices got heated more than once, aggressive energy that could carry over onto the field Saturday night and make this exhibition game a more entertaining contest. This will also be another chance for young fringe players to build on the impressions they made in Week 1. For the 49ers, that means cornerback Sam Womack and wide receiver Danny Gray. Getty Patrick Mahomes will suit up vs. the Washington Commanders in preseason. Patrick Mahomes will suit up for snaps when the Kansas City Chiefs host the Washington Commanders in Week 2 of the preseason on Saturday. Head coach Andy Reid has already revealed Mahomes and other key starters will feature, but the Chiefs aren’t the only ones who will put name value on the field.
