(CNN)When professional cliff diver Eleanor Smart got her foot tangled in a plastic bag after diving into the seemingly pristine waters around Greece, it hit home that something was wrong. The American, who is taking part in the new season of Red Bull's cliff diving series, has since devoted her time to cleaning up the world's oceans, one beach at a time.Alongside her partner and fellow diver Owen Weymouth, Smart founded 'The Clean Cliffs Project' -- an initiative that looks to prevent plastic pollution and educate people in ways to maintain our natural surroundings. Now, as she travels the world with her sport, she finds time to give back to the stunning places she feels so privileged to dive in. "It was just one of those 'what?' moments," she tells CNN Sport, recalling the time in Greece she realized something should be done. (CNN)For Lisa Wright, an elite-level diving judge from New Zealand, it was supposed to be the highlight of her career -- the chance to adjudicate at the sport's premier event at the Olympics. But the scenes that unfolded after the men's 10-meter platform final in Tokyo last year "darkened" her Olympic experience for some time, Wright says. They also led to an official complaint being lodged by Diving New Zealand and Wright against Zhou Jihong -- a vice-president of water sports governing body FINA and one of the most influential figures in diving -- on the grounds of harassment and abuse. That was after Zhou, who has been dubbed the "Iron Lady" of Chinese diving, allegedly launched a verbal tirade at Wright at the 10m platform event's conclusion for underscoring Chinese divers. "She was on poolside screaming at me and yelling at me -- it was definitely one of the most humiliating experiences of my life," Wright tells CNN Sport. Many criticisms have been made about it. But Alejandra Orozco, A bronze medalist in synchronized diving, he defends the performance of Aztec athletes, as he assures that none of them go to the Olympic Games with the idea of losing. “It gives me emotion, I think it was about getting closer, it was not the merit either, but they gave their best, they tried, we all tried, we all left our souls and there are many factors that cause positions to be given or those places to be given. I insist, all of those who finished fourth and those who stayed a little further behind, in my case sixth place in individual (his bronze medal was synchronized), we are more motivated because we know that we are closer, that we have two or three years to classify again and to return to the next ones. Tom Daley has been making a name for himself at the Tokyo Olympic Games on and off the diving board. The British diver, who has been competing in the Olympics since he was 14 years old, won a gold medal last week in synchronized 10-m platform diving alongside his diving partner, Matty Lee. Daley, though, has stayed in the headlines thanks to what he calls “his secret weapon”—his knitting skills. Daley went viral when he was spotted knitting while cheering on the divers at the women’s 3-meter springboard final. It was such an unexpected sight that the BBC’s sports commentators mentioned it on air during their coverage of the diving competition. “What do you reckon he’s crafting there?”...
When US Olympic Diving Team member Jordan Windle competes in the men's 10-metre platform diving competition this weekend, he'll be doing it for his dad. At 18 months old years old, Jordan was sick, malnourished, and fighting for his life in a Cambodian orphanage — until his father, Jerry Windle, flew halfway around the world to adopt him as a single parent. Now 22, Jordan has reached the pinnacle of his sport and is readying to compete on the world stage on Friday, but he told the Today show he'll really only be thinking of one person watching at home in California: 'I tell everyone, when they ask me why I dive, I dive purely for my dad and how much he loves watching me.' (CNN)Viewers of the Tokyo Olympics are apparently a little baffled by the behavior of athletes in the diving events. Divers typically emerge from the water after a plunge and immediately take a quick shower by the side of the pool -- even though they are already wet. Then they dry themselves off with little towels -- even though they will get wet again on their next dive."Why do divers shower after each dive?" has been one of the top Google searches about the Olympics in the past week. So yes, why? As the platform diving events continue this week, we spoke to Jacob Brehmer, diving coach for Ball State University in Indiana, for some answers. Why divers showerRead MoreAccording to Brehmer, the answer comes down to one thing. "Divers shower in between dives typically just to keep themselves and their muscles warm," he says. They usually rinse off in water that's warmer than the pool.Indoor diving pools like the one at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre must maintain water temperatures of at least 26 degrees Celsius (78.8 degrees Fahrenheit), according to...
TOM DALEY has displayed his new Tokyo 2020 themed knitted cardigan on his knitting Instagram page. The diver, 27, won his first Olympic gold medal early last week and has spent much of his time since knitting. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tom Daley (@madewithlovebytomdaley) He was spotted knitting in the stands of the Aquatics Centre last Sunday during the final of the Olympic Women's 3m springboard final. But Daley also had a bigger project on the go since the start of the Games - his very own Olympic cardigan. He was keen to show it off in an Instagram video, with the white cardigan bearing the word 'Tokyo' in Japanese. Other embroideries include the letters 'GBR' representing Team GB, as well as a Union Jack on the left sleeve. The back of the cardigan is very extravagant, boasting 'TEAM GB' in between the Team GB logo - a lion's head - and above the Olympic rings. Alongside the photo Daley posted a caption that reads: "When I got to Tokyo, I wanted to make something...
TOKYO (AP) — It could have been confused for a lesson in computer coding on the scoreboard: 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10. And in some ways, it was. China’s divers are programmed from an early age to strive for perfection. The 14-year-old Quan Hongchan delivered it with two of her five dives in a dominant performance to claim the gold medal in women’s 10-meter platform at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. All seven judges gave Quan perfect 10s for her second and fourth dives in the five-round competition. Perfection was achieved first with an inward 3 ½ somersaults tuck then more ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ followed for a backward armstand with 2 somersaults and 1 ½ twists. For her final dive, a backward pike with 2 ½ somersaults and 1 ½ twists, Quan received six more 10s. With IOC president Thomas Bach watching at the Tokyo Aquatics Center, Quan ended with 466.20 points to finish comfortably ahead. Her Chinese teammate Chen Yuxi claimed the silver medal with 425.40 points. The 15-year-old Chen won the 10-meter platform title at the...
ANDREA Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson both made the 10m platform diving final. But only after each making a mess of one of their five attempts. 3Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix booked her place into the 10m platform diving final this morningCredit: Reuters 3And she'll be joined in the final by fellow Brit Lois ToulsonCredit: Getty Toulson stood joint fifth after her opener but then got her second dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersault which was the easiest of the five routines on her programme, badly wrong to plunge to 14th. With only the top 12 to qualify, it meant Toulson, girlfriend of three-time Olympic medallist Jack Laugher, could not afford another mistake. And the 21-year-old from Huddersfield pulled herself together to get back into the top 10 after round three and a terrific fourth effort, an inward three and a half somersault with tuck, earned 72.00pts, her best of the contest. That moved Toulson up to sixth and another solid dive on her final effort eased her into the final in ninth behind Hongchan Quan of China. Spendolini-Sirieix, daughter of “First Dates” maitre...
Getty Diver Delaney Schnell checks her scores during the US Olympic Trials. On Wednesday evening, American diver Delaney Schnell could inch closer to capturing her second medal of the Tokyo Olympics. Along with fellow Team USA diver Katrina Young, the 22-year-old Schnell will compete in the women’s individual 10-meter platform semifinal. As it stands, she looks to be in a strong position to do so. Her combined score of 360.75 ranked No. 3 overall during the preliminary round. Moreover, she finished just four points behind China’s Quan Hongchan at No. 2. Chen Yuxi, also of China, posted the top score of the round. TOKYO (AP) — Hearing the start of her introduction, Chinese diver Shi Tingmao put one foot on the top spot of the podium. She sheepishly stepped back down and waited for the announcer to finish. It was the only mistake she made all day. Shi easily won the women’s 3-meter springboard title on Sunday, earning her second diving gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics. Once on the podium, a smiling Shi raised both arms in triumph. “I’ve waited so long for this moment,” Shi said through a translator. “There were a lot of expectations. I feel satisfied.” Shi added the individual 3-meter title to the springboard synchro gold she earlier won with Wang Han, successfully defending both of her titles from five years ago in Rio de Janeiro. They took silver in men’s 10-meter platform synchro. “They’re so consistent,” bronze medalist Krysta Palmer of the United States said. “They have a lot of pressure, but I think they handle it pretty well.” Shi led all five rounds, totaling 383.50...
TOKYO (AP) — The scrapes on her knee, stomach and forearms have long since healed. Well worth the price for that 400-meter gold medal. The last time everyone saw Shaunae Miller-Uibo on the Olympic stage, the sprinter from the Bahamas was diving across the finish line. It was a memorable moment from Rio. In Tokyo, she’s trying to make her mark in another way — with the possibility of a difficult double. Miller-Uibo is chasing after the 200 gold and — depending on how she’s feeling — defending her 400 crown. That would require four races spread over two days, including the first round of the 400 meters and the 200 final 12 hours apart on Tuesday. That’s a lot of work. But she’s game. What’s a little pain for gold, right? After all, she flew over the line with her arms spread out to edge Allyson Felix by 0.07 seconds in Rio. Miller-Uibo felt those aches for days and days after the race. “But it was all worth it,” Miller-Uibo told The Associated Press. “I wouldn’t trade those...
TOKYO (AP) — China had another dominating performance at the Olympic diving pool, taking the top two spots in the semifinals of the women’s 3-meter springboard on Saturday. In a repeat of the preliminaries, defending Olympic champion Shi Tingmao posted the highest score over five dives and teammate Wang Han ranked second. The pair already teamed up to win the 3-meter synchronized event. Shi led the way with 371.45 points. Wang (346.85) and Canada’s Jennifer Abel (341.40) were the only ones even close to the leader, stamping China as a huge favorite in Sunday’s final to earn its fourth diving gold in five events at these games. The top 12 moved on to the final, a group that included Americans Krysta Palmer and Hailey Hernandez. Palmer was fifth and Hernandez 10th. But Canada’s Pamela Ware made a stunning mistake after finishing fourth in the prelims and ninth going into her final dive of the semifinals — good enough to advance. She botched the takeoff and simply plopped into the pool feet first, a failed dive that resulted in...

CDC recommends masks for vaccinated people in high transmission areas. What does that mean? Cuomo wants N.Y. workers back in offices by Labor Day, tells businesses to deny unvaccinated patrons If you’ve tuned in to any Olympic diving events, you may have noticed that sprinklers spray water over the surface of the pool between dives. It seems like it could be to replenish liquid that sloshed over the sides after a dive—but world-class divers hardly make a splash. So what’s the point of wetting something that’s already as wet as it could possibly be? In this case, as Sporting News reports, it’s a safety measure. The Fédération Internationale De Natation (FINA), which oversees Olympic swimming events, mandates “surface agitation … to aid the divers in their visual perception of the surface of the water” [PDF]. In other words, the sprinklers create ripples across the water, which makes it easier for divers to see how far they are from the surface of the pool. That way, they can time their flips and twists to culminate right before they hit the...
