Former Tennessee football coach Jeremy Pruitt has admitted to giving as much as $400 in a Chick-fil-A bag to the mother of a player in violation of NCAA rules back two years ago, before he was fired amid a wave of accusations in early 2021. According to a document obtained by the Knoxville News Sentinel detailing allegations of 18 NCAA violations, Pruitt received a call from the woman asking for money. He responded by going to his car, where he kept cash, putting it in the Chick-fil-A bag and giving it to her outside the team facility. The embattled former coach told investigators he gave the unidentified woman the money because 'it was the human thing, the right thing to do.' The payment was allegedly part of $12,707 given to the player or his family. That total includes $3,000 to help the player's mother pay 'a delinquent medical bill so she could schedule a hip surgery' in 2019.  Tennessee is currently defending itself against the NCAA's Level I charge of failing to monitor the football program, saying Pruitt and nine others fired...

Phil Murphy would easily defeat GOP challenger Jack Ciattarelli in Tuesday's election.  Murphy was in the lead by just 44,000 votes, or 1.8 percentage points, on Thursday evening, a much narrower lead than the 11-point margin that Monmouth gave Murphy in its last poll on Oct. 27.  "If you are a Republican who believes the polls cost Ciattarelli an upset victory or a Democrat who feels we lulled your base into complacency, feel free to vent," Patrick Murray, the director of Monmouth University Polling Institute, wrote in an op-ed for NJ.com on Thursday.  "I owe an apology to Jack Ciattarelli’s campaign — and to Phil Murphy’s campaign for that matter — because inaccurate public polling can have an impact on fundraising and voter mobilization efforts," he wrote. As a teenager more than 60 years ago, a Van Nuys native stole a pair of handcuffs from the LAPD. Now, as a 74-year-old “grandpa,” he has returned the cuffs, along with an apology and a $100 donation to the police. The inspiration for that mea culpa? His two young grandsons. The boys were “aghast” when he told them the story of how he got the handcuffs, he said. The Vista resident, who police said did not want to be identified, relayed his tale in a letter to the department, which tweeted it out. Grandpa wrote that he was not proud of stealing the cuffs, as it was wrong “on so many levels.” He explained that he was at Bob’s Big Boy on Sherman Way when an LAPD officer got into an altercation with a “young ruffian.” He scooped up the officer’s handcuffs after they became loose and slid across the floor, stopping right at his feet. Since then, he wrote, whenever he’s looked at the cuffs, he “felt a little guilty.” Recently two of his grandsons, ages 6 and...

Bank of America searched through customer transactions to target people who may have been involved in the Capitol riot and handed information over to federal authorities, according to a new report. At the request of federal investigators, the bank identified 211 customers who fit the profile after making purchases in the D.C. area or spending money on flights or accomation in the days around the violent riot, Fox News' Tucker Carlson claimed on Thursday. Carlson reported that one person identified by their transactions was taken in for questioning but was found to have no links to the event, as he accused the bank of spying on its customers and sharing their private information without their knowledge. He also accused the bank of treating its customers 'like a member of Al Qaeda' for handing over the information. Dear Moneyist, In 2012, my daughter and her husband (at the time) wanted to start a business. She asked for a loan of $20,000 to start the business, but I decided to make that part of her inheritance. So I gave them $20,000. Now they are divorced, and he got the business. Can I ask him for the $20,000 back given that the money was meant for my daughter as her inheritance? Any advice would be appreciated. They both live in Michigan. Thanks, The Father in Naples, Fla. Dear Father, You gave the money to your daughter as an advance on her inheritance. That was your gift to her, and she used it to start a business with her husband, which makes that $20,000 and the business marital or community property. It was, in legal parlance, commingled. You can ask for it back, and appeal to your brother-in-law’s generosity of spirit, but whether or not he agrees is another issue. He is under no legal obligation to return the money. There is no money per se to return....

My game was roulette. I went in with $200, and I didn’t miss a number, so much so that even the lady spinning the wheel said, ‘Nothing sweeter than a repeater.’” The actor continued, “In 20 minutes I turned $200 into $20,000, so I went and found an orphanage in the Bahamas, met all the kids and the headmistress, and said, ‘This is for you.’ I put the 20 grand in her hand, walked...
When Anthony Davis takes the floor for Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Friday night, he will be playing for a championship, which would be the first title of his career. He will be playing alongside LeBron James, one of the few players in the league who could be considered equal or superior to Davis in terms of on-court impact. And he will be playing for the Lakers, one of the most successful franchises in sports history. It could be a storybook ending for Davis and the start of something special in Los Angeles considering the 27-year-old is just now entering his prime. Of course, none of it would have been possible without Davis and his agent, Rich Paul, blowing up the Pelicans’ 2018-19 campaign with a midseason trade request. MORE: Davis delivers defensively by shutting down Jimmy Butler Back in January of 2019, Davis took the bold approach of going public with his request. This wasn’t “sources say” flashing across the screen — Paul just told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that his client wanted out of New Orleans and didn’t plan to sign a five-year, $240...
President Trump wasted little time before criticizing Senator Kamala Harris as "nasty" and a "phony" after Joe Biden picked her as his running mate. But years ago, Mr. Trump actually chipped in to help fund her political rise. Campaign finance records show that Mr. Trump donated a total of $6,000 to Harris' campaigns for California attorney general, a few years before she went on to become a senator and then presidential candidate. He gave Harris $5,000 in 2011, and another $1,000 in 2013. Mr. Trump's daughter, Ivanka, donated $2,000 to Harris' campaign in 2014. And Mr. Trump's Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, gave $2,000 to Harris' Senate campaign in 2016. Harris served two terms as California's attorney general before she was elected to Congress. Get updates from the campaign trail delivered to your inbox Harris is the first Black woman, and the first South Asian American, to run on a major party's presidential ticket. The Trump campaign claimed the president's donations to her years ago are proof that he is not racist — an allegation Harris herself has leveled at...
Matthew Stafford says he didn’t give much thought to opting out of this coming season. It would have been understandable if he’d considered it. I never gave it seriously, you know, though,” Stafford said Tuesday. “I want to play football. I want to be out here. I have a supporting wife and family that know I love doing what I do and know it’s important to me, so they were right on board.” Stafford and his family have dealt with their share of stress over the past couple of years. His wife had surgery last year to remove a brain tumor. Then Stafford went through football-related injuries that halted his 2019 season. His status was momentarily...
