Three preseason games, five weeks and hundreds of training camp throws still separate Lamar Jackson from Week 1, but it’s not hard to imagine what the Ravens quarterback will look like come Sept. 11. Through a week and a half of training camp, Jackson has been more consistently accurate than he’s ever been over five summers in Baltimore, and his range as a passer has never been greater. Even with the Ravens’ top wide receiver, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, traded this offseason, and their top left tackle, Ronnie Stanley, still not cleared to practice, Jackson has inspired rave reviews from coaches and teammates. “He’s throwing it probably better than I’ve ever seen him throw it,” offensive coordinator Greg Roman said last week. “He’s really worked hard in the offseason, and it’s showing, so he’s got to build on that. It’s really exciting. We’re all very excited about that. And now we’ve all got to get on the same page, so we can function as a unit and … take every ounce of that performance and maximize it.” Under the Ravens’ reporting...

When the Ravens shook up their training camp schedule this offseason, coach John Harbaugh knew there’d be days like Tuesday, practices where the coaching staff’s stated goal — “Be fast and be perfect” — applied as much to the tedium of special teams execution as to the thrill of 11-on-11 work. Tuesday’s practice, carried out in shoulder pads, helmets and shorts, was a changeup in both pace and purpose after Monday’s first padded practice. The highlight of the first hour of work might’ve been a 55-yard coffin-corner punt from rookie Jordan Stout. The team’s quarterbacks and a handful of veterans didn’t take the practice field until about 2:05 p.m., 30 minutes after practice was scheduled to start. A handful of starters were missing, either taking the day off or nursing minor injuries. Even when the Ravens’ offense and defense met on the field for the day’s first 11-on-11 session, the action was limited to a series of running plays, executed behind an offensive line missing three starters: left tackle Ronnie Stanley (ankle), right guard Kevin Zeitler and right tackle Morgan...

Ryan Poles was introducing himself to Chicago, trying to ingratiate himself to an edgy but still hopeful Bears fan base. It was only Poles’ first week on the job back in January. Yet he was intent on giving the masses a glimpse into his values and beliefs as the new general manager of one of the NFL’s charter franchises. “What am I about and what’s my philosophy?” Poles said from center stage of his official introduction at Halas Hall. “We are going to build through the draft. We’re going to acquire young, fast and physical football players. We’re going to be selective through free agency. And we’re going to connect evaluation with valuation. “We’re going to have a relentless approach to fix our weaknesses. We’re going to have self-awareness of who we are. SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Baker Mayfield developed a reputation in Cleveland as a bit of a gunslinger, willing to make the occasional risky throw downfield if it meant possibly making a big play. The No. 1 overall draft pick in 2018 may be asked to do things a little differently with his new team, the Carolina Panthers. “If you take care of the ball, most likely you’re going to win games — that’s the main motto here,” Mayfield said after his first training camp practice with the Panthers at Wofford College. While Panthers coach Matt Rhule emphasized he wants his quarterbacks to play “aggressive,” he also said they need to be smart and “eliminate careless mistakes” and “not try to do too much.” Mayfield understands there needs to be a balance. “There is a time to be aggressive and try to push the ball down the field without being stupid and careless,” he said. “There is aggressiveness and then there is carelessness — and there’s a fine line between those. Knowing when to take your shots when you have a...
ONE of the best bizarre and hilarious winning goals you will ever see has been scored in the United States. (CNN)Getting your hands on a match ball is a dream for any sports fan. The Boston Red Sox are not having a great time playing baseball right now, and they continue to embarrass themselves. For Orlando Magic guard R.J. Hampton, volunteering to play in the Las Vegas summer league was a simple decision. To coach Jamahl Mosley, Hampton stepping forward was an embodiment of the kind of team he’s looking to build. “That’s what we want [from] all our guys,” Mosley said after Sunday’s pre-summer league practice. “We talk about the competitive edge we want to continue to have and the joy for the game. The ability for R.J. to not play major minutes throughout the year but say I want to play summer league says a lot about his willingness to compete.” Players of Hampton’s experience level — he’s entering his third season in the NBA — can’t be required to play in summer league like most first- or second-year players. So when it was revealed Hampton was on the Magic’s summer league team, it was evident he asked to play. New York played a man down after Sean Nealis was shown a red card in the 73rd minute for a hand ball that — after video review — was determined to have denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. The Dragons edged out Ukraine 1-0 in a tense play-off in Cardiff earlier this month. 2Gareth Bale celebrates Wales' winner against UkraineCredit: Getty 2The goal was originally an Andriy Yarmolenko own goalCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun The decisive first-half strike was originally recorded as an own goal by Andriy Yarmolenko as the ex-West Ham man stooped to inadvertently head in a Bale free-kick. However a statement from the FA Wales said: “Following a technical review, Gareth Bale has been awarded the winning goal against Ukraine that sent us to the World Cup. "Llongyfarchiadau ein Capten! (Congratulations to our captain!) Time to celebrate that goal all over again!" It means Bale – who will play for Los Angeles FC from next month – scored all three of his country’s goals in their two play off games. BRITISH star Jodie Burrage saved the day after a ball-boy was taken ill - by offering him some Percy Pigs. The 2022 Wimbledon Championships got off to a rocky start after rain saw all play grind to a halt after just 40 minutes. 1British star Jodie Burrage helped a poorly ball boy by offering him an isotonic drink, energy gel and even a fan's bag of Percy PigsCredit: PA When play finally restarted, British wildcard Burrage, 23, was forced to go from tennis player to nurse in a matter of seconds. Trailing 5-2 at the rain delay, she quickly slipped to a 6-2 first set defeat against Ukrainian opponent Lesia Tsurenko. But moments later, she was called into action after a ball-boy suddenly fell ill - with the BBC quickly cutting the feed to Court 18, clearly worried about his wellbeing. The youngster in question collapsed into a chair and looked visibly dazed. Officials rushed over to check on him with play halted for a second time.. Still looking somewhat worse for wear, Burrage came over to help. The British...
SAN FRANCISCO — It’s never good when there’s a debate to be had over the worst display of baseball. Even worse when the actual worst team in the National League is on one side and doesn’t factor into the conversation. In Sunday’s 10-3 loss to the Reds, the Giants and their fans will have to decide what was worse: the seven runs allowed in the third after recording two outs, or the three that scored in the fifth because of a brazen lack of effort. It added up to their sixth loss in the past eight games and the second time this season they’ve dropped two of three to Cincinnati. Anthony DeSclafani, in his second start back from a two-month absence, breezed through two innings and retired two of the first three batters of the third. Then it all fell apart. DeSclafani wouldn’t record another out and was credited with seven runs over 2⅔, raising his ERA to an eye-popping 9.95 through five starts. The seven runs that followed matched the most the Giants have allowed in an inning this...
Even to those who watch Jorge Mateo play baseball every day, what the Orioles shortstop did was the sort of mouth-gaping, voice-rasping web gem that makes his teammates shake their head in wonder. In the ninth inning of a one-run game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night, Mateo did what only he can do. He charged a slow chopper, barehanded the ball and sidearmed it to first, nabbing a diving Bo Bichette, one of the most aggressive base runners in the league. By the time Mateo released the ball, his momentum brought him past the pitcher’s mound. For a player who expects great defensive plays out of himself, even he was wowed by what he had just done — smacking his glove as his teammates yelled or gaped or did some combination of the two. “Today was really impressive,” Mateo said after the 6-5 victory. His teammates and manager agree, and they’ll say so more flatteringly. What makes the 26-year-old shortstop so talented in the field is two-sided. His speed allows him to get to balls hit almost...
(CNN)Two-time major winner Justin Thomas has enjoyed many happy Saturdays of golf. The third round at the 2022 US Open is unlikely to rank among them. The writing was perhaps on the wall before the 29-year-old had even struck his first competitive ball of the day at The Country Club."From Louisville, Kentucky -- Justin Thompson," the tee box announcer mistakenly called as Thomas prepared for his opening drive, prompting a bemused reaction from the American.Following a solid start of three consecutive pars, confusion made way for fury at the fourth hole when Thomas' tee shot settled at the cusp of a drain in the center of the fairway. Not afforded a drop, Thomas proceeded to play the ball as it lay, with his errant shot sailing into a bunker well short of the green.Read MoreLooking down at the drain in disgust before the ball had even landed, to say the American was displeased would be an understatement."That's what pisses me off because so many other people would lie about being able to hit that, but it's just like, 'I'm not gonna hit...
TRIALS for Arsene Wenger's kick-ins idea are set to take place, while computerised offside calls have come a huge step closer to being introduced for this year’s World Cup. And Gareth Southgate seems certain to be able to select a 26-man squad for the tournament in Qatar. 1Arsene Wenger's kick-in idea is set to be trialled ahead of the World CupCredit: Getty Football’s Law-making body The International FA Board belatedly approved six new tweaks to the game for next season, including making the use of five substitutes a “permanent” change. Trials will take place to look at Wenger’s ideas for kick-ins to be an option to replace some throw-ins and a “daylight” provision to tweak the offside law in favour of attackers but a potential “ball in play” clock to clamp down on time-wasting. Those are just a number of eye-catching developments from Ifab’s AGM in Doha. Elsewhere it was confirmed that trials of “semi-automated offside”, the so-called “robo-linesman”, were on course to allow the system to be brought in for the tournament which starts in November. Getty Marcus Smart, Al Horford Al Horford and the Boston Celtics have come under scrutiny over the last 24 hours, after the veteran big man dived onto the floor to retrieve a loose ball, hurting Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors in the process. We’ve been here before, but last time it was Marcus Smart who hurt the superstar guard in a similar fashion. Horford, 35, is widely regarded as a consummate professional, and while he’s competitive, he’s never shown a vindictive side to his game. Speaking to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart came to the defense of Horford, noting that in the NBA Finals, every possession is played at the highest intensity level possible. "Nothing is intentional. It’s the Finals. We’re trying to win just like them. First one to the ball, as we all know, wins." Al Horford and Marcus Smart spoke with @ChrisBHaynes about the play that injured Stephen Curry late in the fourth quarter. ➡️ https://t.co/AUqSRMq71L pic.twitter.com/XAQ8xopQxm Read More From Heavy Turn $5 Into $200 With...

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The NCAA baseball tournament opens Friday with play in 16 double-elimination regionals. Regional winners advance to best-of-three super regionals next week, and the final eight go to the College World Series in Omaha beginning June 19. Some of the top story lines: WHO’S HOT East Carolina (42-18) is on an 18-game win streak that’s the nation’s longest and one shy of the program and Conference USA records. The Pirates own the dubious distinction of having the most NCAA Tournament appearances (31) without making a CWS. At No. 8 overall, they earned their highest seed since 2001 and did it after losing top MLB pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt to a season-long suspension and with weekend starter Jake Kuchmaner missing six weeks because of injury. Stanford (41-14) carries a 16-game win streak into the tournament and VCU (40-18) has won 15 in a row. WHO’S NOT Arkansas (38-18), the No. 1 overall seed last year, has lost four straight. Vanderbilt (36-21), the 2021 national runner-up, has lost five of its last six. Virginia (38-17), which lost...
Many dogs spend their days lying around on floors or outside in their human’s yard. Often, the highlights of their day are the 2-3 times a day when their human attaches a rope to the collar around their neck, and they walk around the block for about 10-15 minutes, step-in-step with their “masters.” But having a dog is a big responsibility and should be treated as such. Like all animals, they need mental and physical stimulation, and one of the best ways to give them those things is by playing games with them. Here are 8 games you can play with your dog that will tire them out, keep them sharp, and will be fun for the both of you. 1. Chasing Bubbles Source: CrazyFunnyStuffCFS/YouTube If you have an older dog or a dog that is physically impaired, this may become one of their favorite games, especially if they used to enjoy a game of fetch. Some dogs may automatically chase after the bubbles, but if they don’t, then you can give them an example by swiping the...
