A custom sanctuary designed to pay homage to the family’s Venezuelan heritage was spared little expense. The Orinda home is situated on a cul-de-sac with endless views and endless opportunities to enjoy those views. This 1.01-acre property features a front courtyard entry, a fountain, gardens and a backyard vineyard.  Berkeley architect Fred Hyer transformed the 1950s rancher at 10 Crestview Court into a hacienda-style home showcasing thick stucco and Old World textured walls, a cooling tower, imported tile flooring, wood-trimmed windows, and an open floor plan that seamlessly connects to extraordinary outdoor venues. The exposed beam ceiling adds ambience to the breakfast room.  Gather around the outdoor fireplace on the expansive patio and pergola overlooking the vineyard and distant hills, or stroll down a staircase with custom iron railing to the bocce ball court. The single-story design easily accommodates formal entertaining with a comfortable casualness ideal for today’s lifestyle. Its design with exceptional finishes, magnificent southern-facing views, and oversize picture windows taking advantage of those views was recognized with a 2011 Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Architecture. HTC Vive is getting set to release a fitness-focused VR headset called the Vive Air, according to a leak from the World Design Guide awards. It looks to offer a lightweight, comfortable design with up to four tracking cameras — much like the Oculus Quest series, but with larger optics.  According to the Design Guide description, the Vive Air is “specially designed for virtual fitness, optimized for high intensity with long use.” To that end, it uses knitted materials inspired by running shoes that are breathable and quick-drying for better ventilation during heated exercise. It also features a quick-release design so you can easily pull off the soft components to wash them.  HTC Training and active games like Beat Saber have been some of the biggest (and frankly, few) successes for VR. It’s particularly compelling for boxing, dance and other fitness programs since it immerses you in a 3D environment where you can more easily see how to do moves. It also makes exercise more fun, adding measurable extra enjoyment compared to using music alone, according to one study...
Colorado city to establish independent police monitor in wake of Elijah McClains death The first House Hunters throuple opened up about losing work and friends over their relationship © Photo: Getty Images London Fashion Week came to a close today with a countess interviewing a designer. That’s how Priya Ahluwalia received the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design in this uncommon year—via a webinar. These are strange times for Awards ceremonies obviously, but this one had an unexpected plus over podiums and short acceptance speeches: It was a revealing 20-minute conversation between Sophie Countess of Wessex and Ahluwalia, who was presented with the Queen’s trophy in recognition of her work as of one of London’s young champions of sustainability and diversity. Ahluwalia’s eponymous menswear collections speak eloquently about her British and Indian-Nigerian identity; she owns a POC-staffed enterprise and has been a committed sustainability practitioner since her graduation show at Westminster University. Sophie Wessex—patriotically clad in Victoria Beckham—was ready to ask her all about it. Her Majesty inaugurated the award in 2018 for talented emerging designers who are...
The architectural sensation is unexpected at the end of the cul-de-sac on Alamo’s west side. Its award-winning John Nance design is a celebration of masterful engineering and aesthetics. The design required no grading of the hillside, resulting in its wood-siding exterior inconspicuously blending in with the natural topography. This beautiful cul-de-sac home with 2,729 square feet of living space blends in with the gorgeous scenery.  But that’s just the beginning of this sensational property at 1642 Las Trampas Road. It is being offered as part of a dual parcel of land, about 2.5 acres in total. This includes about 1.3 acres zoned for two additional homesites. The dining room is wrapped in windows, enhancing the sensational views.  This home showcases a contemporary style with splashes of midcentury modern design throughout its three levels. Every inch capitalizes on the inspiring east-facing, unobstructed views of Round Hill Country Club and the surrounding Diablo foothills. Patios provide outdoor spaces to appreciate the private and peaceful surroundings.  Exposed trusses and beams, vaulted ceilings, and loads of natural light from skylights, clerestory, and walls of...
An installation of bright pink seesaws along the U.S.-Mexican border that allowed children from both countries to play together in the shadow of a border wall, has won the Bay Area professors who designed the project a prestigious award. Virginia San Fratello, associate professor of design at San Jose State, and her husband, Ronald Rael, professor of architecture at UC Berkeley, have won the 2020 Beazley Design of the Year award from the Design Museum in London. The museum’s annual awards recognize projects that have made a real-world impact in the areas of digital, fashion, graphic and product design as well as transport and architecture. Rael and Fratello’s work was considered among 74 shortlisted projects that included Tik Tok’s viral Renegade dance, edible drink capsules that replaced plastic bottles at the London Marathon, and a 3D graphic of the coronavirus particle. The “Teeter-Totter Wall,” a binational seesaw at the border, originally was a conceptional design for Rael’s 2009 book, “Borderwall as Architecture: A Manifesto for the U.S.-Mexico Boundary.” The book has been described as an “intellectual hand grenade,” and “a...

By STEVEN SPEARIE, State Journal-Register (Springfield) SPRINGFIELD, Ill (AP) — Michelle “Micki” Smith’s winning entry for a Ralph Lauren national design contest shows a Black man, his head tilted back and his eyes closed. It simply reads “Hope” with an N95 mask taking the place of the “O.” The model for Smith’s drawing was her 24-year-old son, Micah, who has lived with Smith and her husband, Michael, since returning from Florida in February. The piece, titled “Just Let Me Breathe,” was submitted to the contest, Smith told the State Journal-Register, a week before the George Floyd killing at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer on May 25. One of the cries of protests and rallies that broke out as a result of Floyd’s death was “I Can’t Breathe,” words Floyd uttered before his death. Smith, in a telephone interview Tuesday, said the Feb. 23 killing of Ahmaud Arbery was on her mind at the time she submitted her work, along with concern and anxiety for her son. While the contest was described as “seeing hope moving forward from the...
