Over 25 years after California Polytechnic State University freshman Kristin Smart mysteriously vanished from a frat party, a former classmate and his father are on trial over her murder. Paul Flores, 45, is facing a murder charge after allegedly slaying Smart despite claims he simply walked her home from the off-campus party on Memorial Day weekend in 1996. Prosecutors say that after the grisly crime, Flores’ father, Ruben Flores, helped his son hide the 19-year-old’s body. The pair were arrested in April 2021 in connection with Kristin’s presumed death and disappearance, even though her body has never been discovered. Now, two sets of Monterey County Superior Court jurors must decide the fate of a notorious murder suspect and the patriarch prosecutors say became an accessory after the fact by buying Smart’s body in his yard—and then besmirching her even in death. “The evidence will show Kristin was murdered by Paul Flores, and that Paul Flores and Ruben Flores buried her under Ruben Flores’ deck,” San Luis Obispo County Deputy District Attorney Christopher Peuvrelle said during opening arguments on Monday, according...
A teenage TikTok star whose father shot dead an 18-year-old stalker when he turned up at the family's Florida home armed with a shotgun has had a stalking case she brought against another boy thrown out of court. Ava Majury, 15, appeared in a Naples court on Monday for a hearing in her stalking case against the classmate, whose age and name were not revealed. She claimed the boy had been following her around school and communicating with the 18-year-old stalker. The boy insisted he was trying to help her and warn her about the other obsessive fan, Eric Justin. Majury was seeking a personal protection order against the classmate, and on Monday told the court she had dropped out of school and suffered from nightmares. 'What she loves - what she needs more than anything as a teenager - is to be in school with her friends playing soccer,' said Lanny Davis, Majury's lawyer. 'Yet the fear proven is that she stayed home, because she feared.' Ava Majury is seen in court in Naples, Florida on Monday for a hearing...
A 13-year-old Florida girl who was jailed for nearly two weeks after a classmate threatened their school on social media while pretending to be her is suing the school and Instagram.  Nia Whims, 13, of Pembroke Pines, was accused of threatening to bomb her school in November and was placed in juvenile detention for 11 days. She was exonerated after authorities discovered the threats had been made by a classmate who posed as Nia. On Wednesday, the teenager and her mother, Lezlie-Ann Davis, announced their lawsuit against Renaissance Charter School, Instagram and its parent company Meta.  They are demanding a minimum of $30,000 in addition to costs and attorney's fees. The family is also planning to add the Pembroke Pines Police Department to the suit.  Nia and her mother argue that the social media giant was negligent, given that evidence showing her innocence was 'literally available at the press of a button.' As a result, the lawsuit claims, Nia was exposed to grueling and distressing circumstances during her time at the juvenile detention center.  'When it comes to our babies, when...

The student, presented on Tuesday’s Fox & Friends on Fox News as “Grace,” told co-host Brian Kilmeade that she “personally chose to not wear a mask.” “As I was sitting in my seat, like normal, a student angrily said, ‘No one better get near me’ and I look at him confused and he goes you, especially you. And he points his finger at me and then I look around for a second and by the time I look around he pulls a knife out and lunges it at me,” she claimed. “And I start freaking out and I’m shaking and I’m screaming, ‘No, no, no, no, no.’ And he’s not putting the knife down. And I don’t know what to do, so I immediately run and I go get a teacher and the teacher thankfully calls assistance.” Grace claimed that there was no teacher in the classroom and that the alleged incident happened “during a passing period.” She...

Chase Hall, Mary’s son and a Mater Dei basketball player, allegedly was attacked and beaten by two Mater Dei football players as he left a gathering in Irvine shortly after midnight on May 5, 2019, according to police reports obtained by the Orange County Register. Chase Hall required surgery to repair his broken jaw. “I’ll never forget what the surgeon said,” Mary Hall said while discussing the punch that broke her son’s jaw. She choked up and for a moment was unable to speak. “He said if it had been a quarter-inch higher,” she finally continued, “he would have been gone. “He would be dead.” Hall spoke a week after a Register report detailed how a current Mater Dei football player punched a teammate, 50 pounds lighter...

Aiden Fucci appeared in court via Zoom on Friday to be charged as an adult with the murder of cheerleader Tristyn Bailey, who prosecutors say he stabbed 114 times in a cold blooded murder.    Fucci was arrested on May 10, a day after 13 year-old Tristyn's body was found covered with knife wounds in St Johns, Florida.  Initially, he was charged with second degree murder as a juvenile, but prosecutors have spent weeks deliberating whether to upgrade that charge to first degree murder, and whether to process him as an adult.   On Thursday, the district attorney did just that, and filed paperwork charging Fucci as an adult with first degree pre-meditated murder. It is a capital felony that can carry the death penalty for anyone who committed the crime over the age of 15. He misses that prospective punishment by just a year.  State's Attorney R.J. Larizza gave harrowing details at a press conference afterwards, saying it was a 'sad' but easy decision given how violent the killing was and indicating that his office will seek life without parole. On...
A Kansas college student convened her own grand jury after a prosecutor refused to bring charges against a man she accused of raping her.  Madison Smith, a 22-year-old recent graduate of Bethany College in Lindsborg, has spent the past three years seeking to hold her attacker accountable for the rape she claims occurred in her dorm in February 2018. Smith said she and her friend, Jared Stolzenburg, were having consensual sex when he suddenly began slapping and strangling her - leaving her unable to say 'stop'.  The next day Smith disclosed the rape to her parents, who immediately called police and took her to a hospital for an examination.  But when she met with McPherson County Attorney Gregory Benefiel a few weeks later, the prosecutor was unconvinced that rape charges were warranted because Smith had not verbally withdrawn her consent to Stolzenburg.  When Benefiel refused to take on the case, Smith took matters into her own hands - using a law passed over 200 years ago that allows citizens to summon a grand jury when they believe prosecutors are neglecting to...
