'Give them some space, give them some space.'  A crowd of people attempt to lift the car off 'a few people,' and managed to do so, according to Miles, who spoke to WSVN.  'Everyone is starting to move stuff out of the way and everything, and they pushed it enough so that the person had gotten out,' Miles told WSVN. HISTORY MURDER: THE BIOGRAPHY    by Kate Morgan (Mudlark £16.99, 352pp) A judge and jury at Exeter crown court were presented in 1884 with a chilling and somewhat unusual problem: is it acceptable to kill and then eat a ship’s cabin boy? In the dock, accused of murder, were sailors Thomas Dudley and Edwin Stephens. They had been taking the yacht Mignonette, along with Edmund Brooks and 17-year-old cabin boy Richard Parker, to Australia when it sank off the coast of west Africa. The crew drifted helplessly in a dinghy for more than three weeks. After ten days with no food and little fresh water, Dudley and Stephens held down the sickly cabin boy, butchered him with a penknife and ate his remains. Four days later, they were rescued. Kate Morgan has penned an account of how laws surrounding murder have subtly changed throughout the year. Pictured: The lifeboat in which Richard Parker met his end at the hands of his hungry crew mates The question the court had to consider was this: did the desperate circumstances justify the murder? U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has accused a prosecutor in the Adam Toledo police shooting-death case in Chicago of lying in a Thursday tweet. The prosecutor and Cook County Assistant State's Attorney James Murphy told a court earlier this month that video showed Toledo, a 13-year-old boy who was fatally shot by a Chicago police officer, had a gun in his hand when he was shot.  But Ocasio-Cortez has since accused him of lying ‘about the police killing a child’ after a newly released body camera video still appeared to show that Toledo's hands were in the air and empty when he was shot.  Video showed the teen appearing to drop a handgun and raising his hands right before the cop opened fire. A handgun was also found near where he was shot. Police say the teen had a handgun on him that morning, and that less than a second passed from when Toledo is seen with a gun in hand and when Stillman opened fire. The Cook County State's Attorney office said in a statement that the prosecutor 'failed to fully inform...

Two doctors and a midwife who put a live baby boy into a hospital freezer and left him to die to cover up the fact that he was wrongly diagnosed as stillborn have been jailed by a court in Kazakhstan. The boy, who was born premature on September 29, 2019 at the Atyrau Perinatal Centre, showed multiple signs of life, including moving his leg, that were ignored by the medics who also discussed drowning the infant before placing him into the freezer. Anti-corruption police chief Shyngys Kabdula said the doctors had 'decided to act according to paperwork already issued saying the child was stillborn,' despite noticing the child was alive.   The trio were found guilty on Monday of deliberately killing the baby to hide their negligence, state investigator Askarbek Ermukashev said, according to The Mirror. Head physician Kuanysh Nysabaev - who reportedly ordered the child put in the morgue's cold storage, despite knowing its leg had moved - was jailed for 18 years for 'medical infanticide'.  His accomplices -  obstetrician-gynaecologist Askar Kairzhan and midwife Jamilya Kulbatyrova - were sentenced to 16...

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A judge has made a crucial ruling in the case of a man convicted in a drunk-driving crash that killed a Boy Scout on Long Island. More than 100 supporters, wearing red in solidarity with the family of Andrew McMorris, gathered in Suffolk County Supreme Court on Wednesday awaiting a judge to issue the expected sentence. The pain was so raw and the irony was overwhelming. It was two years ago Wednesday the 12-year-old Boy Scout was run down and killed while hiking with his troop in Manorville. And now, his family finally has justice, CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan reported. What transpired prior to Wednesday marked a stunning turn of events. Would a judge throw out the verdict and start all over after a hearing on alleged jury misconduct? Or was it a stall tactic, a fishing expedition by the defense? The defense suddenly claimed on sentencing day last month that some jurors read accounts and discussed the case before deliberations. You could hear a pin drop when the judge ruled Thomas Murphy, the man who was...

The charges against four social workers connected with the case of 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez, who was tortured and killed by his mother and her boyfriend, will be dropped Thursday, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said. Social workers Stefanie Rodriguez and Patricia Clement, as well as their supervisors, Kevin Bom and Gregory Merritt, were each charged with one felony count of child abuse and one felony count of falsifying public records after the boy died in May 2013. Prosecutors alleged they mishandled evidence of abuse the boy faced at the hands of his mother and her boyfriend, and missed repeated red flags. Judge George Lomeli had previously denied a motion to dismiss the charges against the social workers, saying they had demonstrated “an improper regard for human life” and “a lack of vigilance.” Gabriel’s mother, Pearl Sinthia Fernandez, was sentenced to life in prison for her part in his death in June 2018. Her boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, was sentenced to death. In January, a judge in the 2nd District Court of Appeal said Lomeli...

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado couple accused of killing their 11-year-old son by forcing him to drink large amounts of water are facing several charges, including child abuse and first-degree murder. The Colorado Springs Gazette reports 41-year-old Ryan Sabin and 42-year-old Tara Sabin turned themselves in to authorities Tuesday and are being held without bail at the El Paso County jail. According to an arrest affidavit, Tara Sabin, the boy’s stepmother, told authorities he wore a diaper at night because of a hereditary urological problem. Ryan Sabin, Zachary’s father and a sergeant based at Fort Carson, called 911 after he found the boy in his bed with foam coming from his mouth and blood on his bed. An arrest affidavit says Zachary suffered other physical...
