Polls closed in Wyoming Tuesday night in a primary race that is expected to see former President Donald Trump's top GOP critic in the House, Rep. Liz Cheney, ousted from Congress.  Cheney faced a number of Republican challengers, but lawyer Harriet Hageman received Trump's endorsement last year, and was beating Cheney 29 points in the final poll.  Hageman's election night celebration was held at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Event Center, adjacent to a massive rodeo stadium in the Wyoming capital.  Supporters - a number of them sporting cowboy hats - gathered around barrels decorated with cowhides and lassos munching on charcuterie platters or waiting for drinks at corner bar as Tucker Carlson's Fox News program played on large TVs.  At one point, Another One Bites the Dust, played loudly.   Earlier Tuesday, Cheney appeared alongside her famous father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, at a polling location in Jackson.   'We're facing a moment where our democracy really is under attack and under threat,' Cheney told CBS News outside the polling location.  The threat, of course, being Trump.  'And those of us across the board...

(CNN)Rep. Dan Newhouse of Washington state managed to do something that's proven to be quite rare for the small band of House Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump last year: he kept his political future alive. Over the weekend, CNN projected that Newhouse would emerge out of the top-two primary in the state's 4th Congressional District along with Democrat Doug White. That makes Newhouse just the second member of the "Impeachment 10" to make it to the general election. Newhouse's fellow Washington Republican and impeachment backer, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, is still waiting to find out if she will join him. She and Republican Joe Kent are currently separated by just a few hundred votes for the second spot in the general election in the state's 3rd Congressional District. Dan Smock loved the view from the balcony of the house in Kabul he shared with fellow American aid workers. It looked out over the rooftops of the Afghan capital, with stunning snowcapped mountains in the distance. Smock liked it so much that he says he “hung out on that balcony a lot” during his time in Afghanistan. Someone else who came to appreciate that same view was 9/11 plotter and al Qaeda boss Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was taking the air on the same balcony early Sunday morning when he was killed in an American drone strike. Osama bin Laden’s successor is believed to have been shredded by a special blade-wielding Hellfire missile while alone on his balcony. His fateful daily habit of reading on the scenic terrace of what he presumed to be his safe house was ultimately used to establish a “pattern of life” in the operation which killed him, according to reports. But long before Zawahiri, 71, lived out his final moments there, the same balcony was an American haven in the heart of Kabul....

The House passed an assault weapons ban Friday evening looking to give Democrats a last-minute win on their way out the door for August recess.  Five Democrats voted against the measure - Reps. Kurt Schrader, Ore., Vicente Gonzalez, Texas, Rep. Jared Golden, Maine and Rep. Ron Kind, R-Wisc.  Two Republicans voted for the measure -  Reps. Chris Jacobs, N.Y., and Brian Fitzpatrick, Pa.  The ban cleared a procedural hurdle that allowed the House to move forward with expedited debate on Friday afternoon, with a final vote expected to follow. Three Democrats - Reps. Vicente Gonzalez, Texas, Jared Golden, Maine, and Kurt Schrader, Ore., voted 'no' with all Republicans, but the resolution passed 217 -211.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi meanwhile broke out a floor sign advertising AR-15s for children as she urged members to vote in favor of the ban.  'JR 15: Get 'em one like yours,' the ad reads, along with a photo of a child-sized AR-15.  'Our goal was to develop a shooting platform that was not only sized correctly, and safe, but also looks, feels and operates just like...
Donald Trump called for the homeless to be put into specialized camps and bragged about sending the Secret Service to sweep search tents on Monday, in his first speech back in Washington, DC since leaving the White House. In a somber speech running more than an hour long, the former president hammered the Biden administration on the crime wave sweeping the country while dramatically listing some of the more gruesome incidents that have hit headlines over the last year. He also reiterated past calls to impose the death penalty on drug dealers, claiming that 'You execute a drug dealer, you save 500 lives.’ 'Open up large parcels of inexpensive land in the outer reaches of the city,' Trump said. 'Create thousands and thousands of high quality tents.' He said it was the 'only way you're going to remove the hundreds of thousands of people, and maybe throughout our nation millions of people,' referring to the homeless. 'It can be done in one day,' Trump said. He also boasted about having the Secret Service round up homeless encampments in the nation's...
EVA HAMBACH/AFP via Getty Images This story was originally published by the Guardian and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. When Joe Manchin announced an abrupt end to Senate negotiations over major climate legislation last week, activists and even fellow Democrats expressed outrage against the West Virginia lawmaker. Manchin was attacked as a “modern-day villain” who had delivered “nothing short of a death sentence” to a rapidly heating planet. Some Democratic leaders, however, including President Joe Biden, have since attempted to redirect that anger toward congressional Republicans instead. “Not a single Republican in Congress stepped up to support my climate plan. Not one,” Biden said, speaking at a coal-turned-wind power plant in Massachusetts on Wednesday. “So let me be clear: climate change is an emergency.”   Although congressional Republicans have refused to embrace Biden’s policy ideas, the party has largely abandoned its past climate denialism. But climate experts and activists say the ideas Republicans have proposed are insufficient or misguided and fail to address the magnitude and urgency of this crisis. Republicans have not generally been viewed as champions when it comes to combating...

Mr. President – Don't forget to breathe. That was the pithy headline splashed across DailyMail.com earlier today after President Joe Biden was caught yesterday holding a 'cheat sheet' during a meeting with wind industry executives at the White House. The notecard reads, in part: 'YOU enter the Roosevelt Room and say hello to the participants.' 'YOU take YOUR seat.' 'YOU give brief comments (2 minutes)' 'YOU thank participants' 'YOU depart' Maybe, they should have reminded him to breathe. What makes this card so highly unusual, bizarre, and frankly upsetting is the degree of specificity in the choreography of the president. Does the leader of the free world really need to be instructed to take his OWN seat? He is the president for God's sakes --- there is ONLY one seat in the room for him. What makes this card so highly unusual, bizarre, and frankly upsetting is the degree of specificity in the choreography of the president  If you do not trust your principal to enter a room and sit down, I assume you don't trust him to lead in...

One woman, who asked not to be named, said the blood-curdling noises led them to call cops on Peter McGuire over his treatment of the 22-year-old victim. It comes after police released a mugshot of the 59-year-old from Chino Hills, California, amid fears he may have committed more atrocities. He is accused of horrific abuse of his roommate who he allegedly raped, gouged out her eye, 'disabled' her tongue and slit her nose, ear and lip. The victim moved into McGuire's home but when she decided to move out he allegedly refused to let her leave and kept her against her will. He has since pleaded not guilty to ten charges including kidnapping, mayhem and sodomy by use of force.  It comes after police released a mugshot of the 59-year-old...

Donald Trump issued a series of endorsements from his Save America PAC email on Sunday, including of GOP House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. The endorsement of McCarthy in his reelection to his district in California comes just two days before the primary election in the deep blue state. During the last election in 2020, McCarthy beat his Democratic challenger by 24.2 percent. 'Congressman Kevin McCarthy is an outstanding Representative for the people of California, and a strong and fearless Leader of the House Republican Conference,' the former president wrote. Trump's backing of McCarthy also comes just before the Democratic select committee plans to start prime time hearings related to the January 6 Capitol riot, for which the House impeached the ex-president last year. McCarthy said last month that he would not be complying with the panel's subpoena, calling the move part of the left's 'abusive tactics'. While reports emerged earlier this year of recordings suggesting that McCarthy thought Trump held responsibility for the Capitol riot, the Minority Leader insists that he was only going through options within the caucus. (CNN)Sanctions hit Russian President Vladimir Putin perilously close to home in May, when Britain froze assets belonging to his former wife and his rumored mistress along with others in his circle. It was the latest in a series of extraordinary steps taken by the West to punish Moscow for its bloody invasion of Ukraine. And it came just days after various countries, including Australia, Canada and the United States, slapped sanctions on assets belonging to Putin's two adult daughters.Divesting oligarchs of their ill-gotten assets has proven to be a fruitful endeavor: Since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in late February, the US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on more than 530 well-heeled, well-connected Russians. From yachts to mansions to high-end artwork -- much of it tied directly to illicit Kremlin-linked wealth -- the total worth of Russian assets seized has grown into the billions as the West tries to tighten the squeeze on Putin for the bloody invasion, which now has entered its fourth month. But while seizures of Russian assets have grabbed headlines, they don't appear so far to have stalled Moscow's bloody,...
President Joe Biden will sign a $40 billion U.S. aid package for Ukraine during his trip to Asia in an effort to get arms into the hands of the Ukrainian military and resources to its people without interruption.  The Senate passed the measure Thursday after the president and his team made their way toward Seoul, the first stop on his trip to South Korea and Japan. 'The president does intend to sign the bill while he's on the road so he can sign it expeditiously,' National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters traveling with the president. 'There won't be a gap for that very reason,' Sullivan said. 'So we will have the kind of continuity of support that we asked for. And for that we are grateful for the bipartisan backing that we've got from the Congress, who stepped up and did this from a timely fashion,' he added. An aide is expected to fly a printed copy of the legislation to Asia once it is enrolled to get it to Biden for his signature, after which it will become law....

President Joe Biden attended the first in-person fundraiser of his presidency on Monday night, where he spoke to a small group of wealthy donors focused on climate issues and said the invasion of Ukraine was another reason to end dependence on fossil fuels. 'Russia and Ukraine is another reason why we have to get off our dependence on fossil fuels. Imagine where we'd be right now, if in fact, Europe was energy free of fossil fuels, and we were in a situation where it was all renewables?' he said. The European Union depends on Russia for around a third of its gas supplies. Biden banned the import of Russian gas into the United States, which didn't import much of it, and other Russian luxury items as part of his financial crackdown on the Kremlin. But Monday night's message was more focused on the climate crisis, which the president called 'the existential threat to humanity. That's not hyperbole.' Biden also spoke to the urgency of slowing the planet's warming, saying 'Our grandchildren will never forgive us and the world will change.' The event, at...
Tesla billionaire Elon Musk and his ex-girlfriend Grimes lived in a 'very insecure $40,000 house' because he doesn't lead a billionaire's lifestyle, the singer has revealed. In a sit-down interview with Vanity Fair, the 33-year-old singer opened up about her 'fluid' relationship with Elon, who has an estimated net worth of $228.7 billion.  She explained that the couple, who reportedly split for the first time in September last year, were romantically involved at the time of the interview and co-parenting their two children, X Æ A-12 and Exa Dark Sideræl, despite living in separate homes.  The singer, who has since split from the Tesla CEO for a second time, explained that the decision to live separately came - at least in part - as a result of his desire to live in a low-cost 'insecure house' where neighbors were able to film them.    'Bro does not live like a billionaire. Bro lives at times below the poverty line,' she said. 'To the point where I was like, can we not live in a very insecure $40,000 house? Where the neighbors, like, film us, and...

Only eight states haven't redrawn their congressional lines, which will be in place for a decade. With House Republicans needing to net only five seats to win a majority in the 435-member chamber, each seat this redistricting cycle has taken on outsize meaning. In addition to 44 states that have had to redraw their lines following the 2020 census, six states have low enough populations that they only have a single House member. So, overall, the redistricting process, when completed, will have affected 429 House seats. Here are the states where redistricting is still underway: NEW HOUSE MAPS NOT THE ELECTORAL BONANZA MANY REPUBLICANS EXPECTED Florida Despite Republican control of both chambers of the state Legislature and the governor’s office, Florida’s redistricting process has been held up by an internal Republican debate over what the congressional map should look like. The House select committee probing January 6th has uncovered 'gaps' in White House phone records as it seeks to untangle the events surrounding the Capitol riot. The committee hasn't found evidence records were deleted or otherwise interfered with, the New York Times reported. But the records that do exist do not always comport with what the panel investigators have found through interviews with hundreds of witnesses, and after gaining access to a trove of documents from witnesses and from the National Archives and Records Administration. The gap from White House switchboard records appears to include a crucial time period. Panel investigators have obtained no records of calls Trump made or received during a critical time frame as a mob breached the Capitol in what turned into a riot, CNN reported.  The committee has learned from other witnesses that Trump did make calls Jan. 6th – including one from the Oval Office with then-Vice President Mike Pence the morning of Jan. 6th where Trump accused Pence of being 'not tough enough' to decide not to accept electoral votes certified by states. The House...
Can a state Legislature have too much money to spend? Minnesota’s is about to find out, starting Monday when the 2022 regular session convenes. The $7.75 billion surplus — collected and projected revenue in excess of the approved budget — is in record-setting territory. And coming in the middle of that two-year $52 billion budget means it’s all available to spend on one-time expenditures, new programs or tax cuts. Of course, lawmakers could save some to spend next year in another supplemental budget or in the two-year budget that will be adopted, hopefully, in the spring of 2023. But the state already has a record-setting rainy day savings account and more than a billion dollars in unspent federal American Rescue Plan money. How big is the surplus? Mark Haveman, the executive director of the business-leaning Minnesota Center for Fiscal Excellence wrote that the last surplus anywhere near this size came in 1999 when it made up 15.6 percent of projected biennial spending. This year’s equals 14.9 percent of projected spending and if the ARP money is included, it reaches 17...

The House passed a voting rights bill on Thursday and sent it to the Senate as part of a procedural gambit to allow Chuck Schumer to bypass a Republican fillibuster in order to start debate on the legislation. The House passed the measure 220-203 party-line vote.  The move buys time as he and other Democratic leaders try to persuade Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema to join them in changing Senate rules to kill the filibuster on the voting legislation.  The pressure campaign on the two is on: President Joe Biden heads to Capitol Hill in the afternoon to meet with Democrats in person, Vice President Kamala Harris called them out in an interview on NBC News, and Barack Obama wrote an op-ed in USA Today, calling the filibuster a tool to 'prop up Jim Crow.'  Schumer's gamble may not pay off as he ultimately need 10 GOP senators in his corner to bring the bill up for final passage, which requires 60 votes. Republicans are united in their opposition, arguing elections should be run on the state level instead of on...

A sister-in-law of Michigan's former House Speaker has been identified as the woman who has accused the Republican lawmaker of raping her for more than a decade - with the sexual abuse starting when she was a 15-year-old student at a Christian academy where he was a teacher.  Rebekah Chatfield, 26, came forward to detail her ordeal after filing the criminal complaint against Lee Chatfield last month, accusing Michigan's youngest House speaker in more than a century of sexually assaulting her multiple times while she attended Northern Michigan Christian Academy, which was run by his family.  Lee Chatfield, 33, who was elected in 2014, was the House Speaker in 2019 and 2020 and headed the delegation of seven Michigan GOP leaders who met with then-President Donald Trump at the White House as he tried to overturn Democrat Joe Biden's win in the state.  The abuse by the married politician, who left office in 2021 due to term limits, continued through last year, according to the complaint. Michigan police on Thursday said they are investigating her allegations.   Rebekah Chatfield, 26, married Aaron...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden announced last month that the federal government will buy half a billion COVID-19 rapid test kits and distribute them free to people to use at home. But despite high public demand for tests, it will still be several more weeks before these kits are available to be shipped, White House officials said. DOES THE GOVERNMENT HAVE THE TESTS? Not yet. This week marked the close of an initial bidding period for test manufacturers to apply to the departments of Defense and Health and Human Services for contracts to make the tests. The first contract has already been signed, and additional contracts will be signed in the coming weeks, officials said. All 500 million kits will not arrive at the same time. They will be delivered in batches over months. WHEN WILL THE TEST KITS BE DELIVERED? The federal government is expected to get delivery of the first batch of tests “over the next week or so,” according to White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients. Americans will start receiving them “in the coming weeks”...

President Joe Biden will call out Donald Trump as the 'singular responsibility' behind the January 6th insurrection and warn Americans that democracy remains at risk as he marks the one-year anniversary of the former president's supporters storming the Capitol to try and stop the certification of the 2020 election. Upon arriving at the Capitol, the president told reporters, 'I'm praying that we never have another day like we had.' He was escorted into the building by Democratic leaders, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.   Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will speak in Statuary Hall in the Capitol building. On January 6th, Trump supporters ran through that room on their way to the House chamber, where they failed to breach the security doors.  The president will reference the violence in the Capitol, which left five people dead, and ask the nation if it wants to accept 'political violence as a norm.'  'And so at this moment we must decide what kind of nation we are going to be. Are we going to be a nation that accepts political...
President Donald Trump is seen on a screen speaking to supporters during a rally to contest the certification of the 2020 U.S. presidential election results by the U.S. Congress, in Washington, January 6, 2021.Shannon Stapleton | Reuters One year has passed since the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol, when a violent mob of then-President Donald Trump's supporters forced Congress into hiding and temporarily halted the transfer of power to President Joe Biden. The invasion, from the initial breach of the outer security perimeter to when the building was finally deemed secure, lasted about seven hours. But its impact is still reverberating, especially in Washington, where political battles stemming from the riot have deepened the already-stark partisan divisions on Capitol Hill. A year on, little has been resolved — and some fights are just getting started. The Department of Justice has charged hundreds of rioters, and it is still looking for hundreds of others suspected of assaulting police officers during the riot. Attorney General Merrick Garland has vowed to take "as long as it takes and whatever it takes for...
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has revealed the public events to mark the anniversary of January 6th – with Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.), who was among those huddling for safety inside the House chamber that day, leading testimonials. Pelosi describes the events in a letter to House Democratic colleagues as conveying 'reflection, remembrance and recommitment' – even as former President Donald Trump has announced he will air his grievances about what he calls a 'rigged election' at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on January 6th. 'As we enjoy the Holiday Season with loved ones, we are preparing to mark one year since the January 6th assault on the Capitol,' Pelosi wrote colleagues Thursday evening. The events will begin with a 'pro forma' session at noon, where there will be a moment of silence and a statement from the chair presiding over the House chamber, site of a standoff between Capitol Police and rioters that day. Democrat Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer promised his party that they are not 'giving up on BBB' after a blistering defeat of the president's landmark legislation came when Sen. Joe Manchin announced his opposition.  Schumer signaled he would try to get through a revised version of the bill.   'I know we are all frustrated at this outcome. However, we are not giving up on BBB. Period. We won’t stop working on it until we pass a bill,' Schumer, D-N.Y., told Senate Democrats in a call Tuesday evening, according to Punchbowl News.  Manchin also reportedly spoke on the call and reiterated he was comfortable with Schumer's plan, but has not changed his position on the $1.8 trillion Build Back Better plan.  He again said he won't support any new or expanded government programs that add to the federal debt. The West Virginia Democrat reminded his colleagues that he'd been sounding the alarm on inflation for months - the consumer price index was up 6.8 percent in November over a year ago and the wholesale price was up 9.6 percent.  December's inflation...
Elizabeth Frantz | Reuters Two years after Congress passed a law that ushered in improvements to the U.S. retirement system, lawmakers' efforts to make further enhancements are moving forward — albeit slowly. There's bipartisan backing for measures in both the House and Senate that would build on the 2019 Secure Act, which aimed to increase both the ranks of savers and retirement security. While progress on the proposals has been slow, there's hope for action in 2022, say supporters. "At the end of the first quarter or beginning of second quarter, we could see action on the bills in both chambers," said Paul Richman, chief government and political affairs officer at the Insured Retirement Institute.
