The Chicago Cubs’ losing streak reached 10 games Thursday with a 6-4 loss to the San Diego Padres before 30,096 on a sweltering afternoon at Wrigley Field. The Cubs (23-40) fell into a last-place tie with the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central. And it doesn’t get any easier this weekend as the defending champion Atlanta Braves come to town riding a 14-game winning streak. Keegan Thompson faces the Braves’ Charlie Morton on Friday in the series opener. “We’ve got to come back (Friday) and start a new stretch,” closer David Robertson said. “The Braves come to town. They’re hit. They’re due to lose one. We’re due to win one. Hopefully we can make it work.” The stumbling Cubs were outscored by a combined 49 runs in back-to-back series by the New York Yankees (28-5) and Padres (41-15). According to Cubs historian Ed Hartig, it’s the team’s worst run differential in back-to-back series in franchise history, breaking a record set in 1999. The 1999 Cubs were outscored by a combined 47 runs by the Milwaukee Brewers (17 runs) and...

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Marina Mabrey scored 22 points, Arike Ogunbowale added 20 and the Dallas Wings pulled away in the second half to beat the Minnesota Lynx 94-78 on Saturday night. Dallas (4-2) trailed 45-43 at halftime, but Kayla Thornton made a 3-pointer with 8:22 left in the third quarter to put the Wings up 51-49 and they never trailed again. The Wings outscored the Lynx 36-19 in the third period. Thornton finished with 12 points to help Dallas grab its first home win after an 0-2 start. Satou Sabally had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench before fouling out. Jessica Shepard, Sylvia Fowles and Kayla McBride all had 14 points to pace Minnesota (1-6). Moriah Jefferson and Aerial Powers scored 12 apiece as all five starters reached double figures. The Lynx bench was outscored 27-12 by the Dallas reserves. (© Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. Miami Heat superstar Jimmy Butler continues to dominate in the playoffs, embarrassing the Boston Celtics in the third quarter of Game 1. Regardless of the fanbase, NBA fans from all over have been awestruck by Jimmy Butler in the playoffs. Even Celtics legend Kendrick Perkins gave Butler his due, a testament to just how much his excellence deserves praise—even when he embarrassed Perkins’ beloved Boston team. Jimmy Butter is a postseason Superstar. He don’t give a damn about the regular season but soon as the playoffs start he quickly become a Top 5 player in the NBA! Carry the hell on… — Kendrick Perkins (@KendrickPerkins) May 18, 2022 Here’s a stat to validate Perkins’ perspective: Jimmy Butler scored 41 points in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals series against the Celtics. And although the Jays are to blame for the rampant Celtics turnovers in the third quarter, Butler deserves accolades for a wild third-quarter stat. A Reddit user pointed out that Butler outscored the entire Celtics team in the third quarter alone: 17-14.Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler outscored...
SALT LAKE CITY — Maybe it was the altitude. Maybe the Warriors were just due for one of those nights. Either way, the team that had won its past nine looked discombobulated all night Wednesday against the Utah Jazz. It didn’t take until the final buzzer to know the streak wouldn’t reach 10. When it mercifully sounded, the final tally was 111-85. Initially it appeared as though the Warriors would have no problem extending their season-best stretch of basketball to double digits. The Jazz were playing without all-NBA defender Rudy Gobert, as well as key reserve Rudy Gay and hadn’t yet gotten their returns from a trade deadline move earlier in the day. Golden State raced out to a 13-0 lead with everyone but Steph Curry contributing to the scoring column. But the opening quarter hadn’t even come to a close by the time the early advantage had evaporated. After the 13-0 start, the Jazz outscored the Warriors 111-72. Utah cemented its lead with a 34-9 run that started less than 4 minutes out of intermission and extended...
HARRY KANE is not 15 times worse than Mo Salah. Yet the two most prolific strikers in the Premier League head into Sunday’s clash between Tottenham and Liverpool with their form at complete odds with each other. 2Kane has netted just one Premier League goal so far this seasonCredit: Reuters 2Salah has been in blistering form for Liverpool since the start of the 2021-22 campaignCredit: Rex On that front at least, the stats do not lie. Kane and Salah have either won or shared the Golden Boot in five of the last six top-flight seasons. While Reds ace Salah is enjoying the best form of his career and has scored 15 league goals already this campaign, Kane, is suffering a real stinker, with just one Prem strike for Spurs. Yet Tottenham boss Antonio Conte hopes this massive occasion could maybe be the turning point. He said: “Harry is a world-class striker. Every day that I train him, I understand very well that he’s a world-class striker. “He’s one of the best I've had the pleasure to train. He's amazing. For sure,...
NEW YORK (AP) — Kevin Durant got his 14th triple-double of his career, Patty Mills made a 3 to force overtime and the Brooklyn Nets beat the Toronto Raptors 131-129 on Tuesday night. Durant was upgraded from questionable just before the game because Brooklyn has seven players in the NBA’s health and safety protocol, including starters James Harden, LaMarcus Aldridge and DeAndre’ Bembry. He responded to the last-minute add by scoring 34 points, pulling down 13 rebounds and dished out 11 assists. Brooklyn won their third straight, with Mills adding 30 points, Kessler Edwards contributing 17, Nic Claxton chipping in 16 and Blake Griffin recording 13 before fouling out in overtime. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Toronto (12-15). Fred VanVleet led the Raptors with 31. Gary Trent Jr. and Pascal Siakam each finished with 25. Scottie Barnes had 23, but missed what would have been a game-winning, buzzer-beating 3 in overtime. Trailing by 10 entering the third quarter, Toronto outscored Brooklyn 44-25 to take a 100-91 advantage going into the fourth. But Brooklyn outscored Toronto...
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Alondes Williams finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists to post the second triple-double in Wake Forest history and the Demon Deacons cruised to a 79-53 victory over South Carolina Upstate on Saturday. Williams joins Tim Duncan, who did it in a win over Maryland in 1996, as the only Demon Deacons to accomplish the feat. Williams made 5 of 11 shots from the floor — with one 3-pointer — and all five of his free throws. Carter Whitt came off the bench to score 16 — sinking 4 of 7 from 3-point range — for Wake Forest (7-1). The Deacons are off to their best start since the 2008-09 season when they opened with 16 straight victories. Dallas Walton pitched in with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The Deacons shot less than their ACC-leading 50% from the floor against the Spartans (2-7), sinking 28 of 62 shots (45.2%). Jordan Gainey and Nick Alves scored 10 points apiece to pace SC Upstate. The Spartans trailed 29-18 at halftime before being outscored 50-35 after intermission....
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Tari Eason and Brandon Murray both scored 15 points and LSU breezed to an 83-53 victory over Belmont on Monday night. What is worse than losing the first six games to start your season? How about getting outscored by a 33-15 margin, including 22-5 during 5-on-5 play? Maybe getting booed off the ice by your home fans in your only three home games? Or maybe giving up a goal in the first six minutes of five of those games? Or maybe setting a modern NHL record (at least since this has been tracked since 1980) by opening the season by playing 360 minutes and 57 seconds of hockey without ever holding the lead. Ever. Not even for a single second of hockey. That is what Chicago has experienced so far this season. Sunday’s loss was the latest on-ice embarrassment for this team as they were absolutely steamrolled, at home, by a...
If you were looking for the few SEC East teams that were playing on Saturday to deliver positive outings and keep games competitive, boy were we all wrong. Besides the performance from Tennessee through 3 & 1/2 quarters, it was an extremely embarrassing day for this side of the conference. Let's start in Nashville, as Vanderbilt was looking for the first conference win of the season. Not only did the Dores not show up for their home game, they were dominated in every aspect. Mississippi State showed up in Nashville on a mission to embarrass the Dores, after they were beaten 49-9 last weekend against Alabama. It was 24-3 at halftime, and honestly it could’ve been a whole lot worse. The Dores once again had to roll with Mike Wright at quarterback, which turned into a bad situation, quick. Wright finished the night 12-17 for 122 yards and 1 interception. There didn’t seem to be any kind of life for the Vanderbilt offense, as they finished the game with 9 total yards rushing. That’s disgusting, even for this Vandy offensive...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points, Reggie Jackson added 26 and the Los Angeles Clippers used a dominating second quarter Friday night to defeat the Houston Rockets 126-109 and extend their winning streak to four games. The Clippers trailed by 10 at the end of the first quarter and found themselves down 40-26 with 9:57 remaining in the second before outscoring the Rockets 41-6 the remainder of the period. Leonard scored 11 and Jackson connected on three of his six 3-pointers during the quarter to give Los Angeles a 67-46 advantage at the break. The Clippers were 15 of 21 from the field during the quarter while the Rockets missed 14 of 15 after making their first two shots. The Clippers said the 31-point quarter differential is tied for the second-largest in team history and the largest since they outscored the Lakers by 31 in the second quarter of March 2014 game. According to Sportradar, which has quarter point differentials since 1996, it is the most the Rockets have been outscored in the second quarter and the...
Most importantly, Davey Johnson feels better, thanks for asking and keeping him in your thoughts. “Two weeks of the virus knocked the hell out of me,” the beloved former manager of the Mets (and four other teams) told The Post on Monday. “My wife kept praying for me. All of a sudden, I woke up, after so much fever and coughing, and I didn’t have a cough. I didn’t have a fever. I felt normal. I went from feeling miserable to feeling great. I hope you don’t have to experience [the coronavirus]. “I’ve been a risk-taker my whole life, so what’s a little virus to me? I’ve been scuba-diving with sharks. I’m a survivor.” He’s also a thriver, his 1,372-1,071 record as a skipper placing him 15th all-time in games above .500 (301), his .562 winning percentage ranking 23rd and his wins putting him 31st. Yet for his many accomplishments in baseball (he also put up a pretty good playing career), 1986 had to be his peak. And it was this month, 35 years ago, when Johnson set the tone...
Quincy Guerrier had 20 points, Marek Doelzaj added 18 and Alan Griffin had 15 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks for his fourth double-double of the season, and Syracuse defeated No. 16 Virginia Tech 78-60 on Saturday. The Orange (9-4, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who badly needed a quality win to build its resume for the post-season, held a 40-34 lead at the half but took control in the final 20 minutes. Virginia Tech closed to 47-44 on a lay-in by David N'Guessan with 13:45 to go, then Syracuse outscored the Hokies 31-9 to build its biggest lead of the game at 78-53. Cleveland, Buffalo and Chicago have piled up wins early this season, even if they haven’t come in dominating fashion. Those three teams are all 5-2 after seven games despite being outscored by the opposition. The Browns have been outscored by 21 points thanks to blowout losses to Pittsburgh and Baltimore, while the Bills have been outscored by four points and the Bears by two. Before this trio, the last team to begin the season by winning at least five of the first seven games despite being outscored was the 2010 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who were outscored by 27 points. The Bucs finished that season 10-6, but missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker. It’s the first time since the merger that three teams have done this in the same season. Jacksonville and Atlanta did it in 2004, the Rams and Falcons in 1995, and Chicago and Detroit in 1991. Of the 15 teams that have done it since the merger, six made the playoffs, including the eventual Super Bowl champion Raiders in 1976. The other nine fell short of the postseason....

If I had told you in mid-July that every game is important this season, you would have taken it. If I had told you that every inning is important this season, you would have taken it. In the final inning of the final game of this disgusting bizarre season, you never expected the San Francisco Giants to be there. But they were. You might think it would cause a 5-4 loss San Diego Patress It is the end of the regular season and post-season dreams are even more bearable in one fell swoop. Maybe you are right; Maybe in a day or a week or a month, the last time a silver lining appeared. But now it punches. It felt like it was because it was punching the biggest part Giants They didn’t get enough chances to win that they should be excluded. But this is the rare exception, where the Giants were most clearly injured – I say with zero hyperbole – the worst refereeing performance I have ever seen in a Major League game. The Dallas Stars were mired in a six-game losing streak when the season was paused for 4 1/2 months because of the coronavirus pandemic, and have been outscored and outshot since getting inside the NHL bubble. Yet now they are one of only three teams still playing, already set for their first Stanley Cup Final since 2000. “We’re finding ways to win right now, and that’s all that matters,” captain Jamie Benn said. With their captain and two rookies scoring goals in another comeback, the Stars wrapped up the best-of-seven Western Conference Final in five games with a 3-2 overtime victory against the top-seeded Vegas Golden Knights. “We’re not going home!” goaltender Anton Khudobin screamed after his 34-save performance in the clincher. From their miserable 1-7-1 start to the season way back in October, to an unexpected coaching change for off-ice issues in December after they were back on the winning track, and then that 0-4-2 span into mid-March, these Stars still have a chance to win their second Stanley Cup championship. Tampa Bay took a 3-1...
In Tuesday’s Bet Smart, we took a look at teams that are good bets to go over their season win total in 2020. Here are the teams I figure will Under-achieve: Buffalo Bills (Under 8¹/₂)I can’t get over the fact that the Bills won 10 games while scoring fewer than 20 ppg. The average next-season drop for teams that do this is about 3.6 wins. Until a consistent downfield passing attack is developed, I can’t back Buffalo. Houston Texans (Under 7¹/₂)My feelings about Houston taking a big step back go beyond the ludicrous trade of WR DeAndre Hopkins. The Texans won 10 games despite being outscored last season, and their eight close wins are a telltale sign of a team headed for a decline. Let’s not forget, the last time this team took the field, it was outscored 51-10 in a three-quarter span by the Chiefs, a potentially sobering hangover effect. Las Vegas Raiders (Under 7¹/₂)A lot of cool things are going on with the Raiders as they venture into their first season in Las Vegas, but I don’t see...
