The daughter of slain Robb Elementary School teacher Irma Garcia promised she 'will not be forgotten' in an emotional tribute to her mother, who lost her life in the devastating school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Lyliana Garcia, 16, also lost her father, Jose Antonio Garcia AKA 'Joe', to a heart attack just two days after Salvadore Ramos murdered 19 children and two teachers, including her mother. Irma, 48, left behind Lyliana as well as three other children and the family believes Joe died of a broken heart. To date, a GoFundMe for the couple's now orphaned children has raised over $2.6million. 'Dad, I know this was too much for you. Your heart could not take it. (Photo: CAVAN IMAGES VIA .) A little over a year ago, when Covid-19 was a rare disease in Wuhan without much importance, few thought that they would have to spend more time than ever locked at home. With this new way of living came other changes: pets are happier than ever, sweatpants have dethroned cowboys, and many couples living together have seen their relationship put to the test. “We no longer have the escape routes that we had before to de-stress, so the smallest problems can become real headaches,” says psychologist Bronwyn Singleton. “Everyone is a bit worn out at this point in the movie.” Despite the physical closeness of the people who share a roof, in many cases it has become clear that privacy and trust are lacking in the way of relating to each other. “We tend to think of sex or each other’s physical space when we talk about intimacy in a relationship, but intimacy also encompasses an emotional and intellectual bond that arises from doing things together,” Singleton explains. Under normal circumstances, “at the end of...
More than a third of young adults report symptoms of smartphone addition — regardless of how long a day they spend using their device, a study has found. Researchers from Kings College London surveyed 1,043 people aged 18–30 about their smartphone usage, sleep quality and smartphone use reduction strategies. Around a quarter of the volunteers reported using their phone for at least three hours each day, while 19 per cent used their device for more than five hours daily.  According to the researchers, 406 of the participants met the criteria for having 'smartphone addition'. They reported behaviours such as losing control of how much time they spent on their phone, anxiety when separated from their device and neglecting other things. Both 69 per cent of those in this group and 57 per cent of those without smartphone addiction reported getting poor nights' sleep. While smartphone addiction is not presently recognised as a clinical diagnosis, excessive and detrimental device use has been attracting growing concern. New York has launched a new contact tracing app that will alert users if they've been in close proximity with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus.  The app, COVID Alert NY, was released Thursday as the state continues to see an alarming surge in infections primarily in New York City, where the positivity rate reached 1.52 percent yesterday.   Gov Andrew Cuomo explained how the technology works during a press conference, saying that it uses Bluetooth technology to sense when a person spends more than 10 minutes within six feet of another user.   The app will keep track of a person's contacts so that if they do test positive, anyone who may have been at risk of contracting the virus from them beforehand can be notified by the health department - if they also have the app downloaded. Cuomo assured that no names will appear on the app so that personal privacy is protected, and said that the app will not collect or store any personal information.  He noted that downloading the app is voluntary but urged as many people as...
A good marriage requires good communication. But what if spouses open up to each other about their future only to discover that they disagree over their respective timing to retire?Anxiety sets in if only one half of a couple is ready to retire. Fears can spike if their clashing assumptions — and different needs — expose a deep rift. Skilled financial advisers know how to educate couples without overstepping any boundaries. It takes diplomacy and keen listening skills to offer wise counsel while not getting ensnared in marital squabbles. “They are delicate and complex issues, sometimes bringing up very difficult feelings on both sides,’ says James Lange, an adviser and attorney in Pittsburgh, Pa. Crafty spouses might even enlist the adviser to convince their mate to retire. For example, a workaholic refuses to call it quits, despite a massive nest egg. “Sometimes,” Lange adds, “couples could use a therapist in addition to a financial adviser on these matters.” Author of “The IRA and Retirement Plan Owner’s Guide to Beating the New Death Tax,” Lange works with many college professors...

Have you ever noticed how going on a walk outside can completely clear your head? When you’re out in the fresh air and can feel the sun shining on your skin, all of your problems just seem to melt away. Next time you feel like you’re going to explode with stress or frustration, hit the heal-toe express and go outside. We’ll accept your thanks in advance. While giving yourself a second to cool off and clear your thoughts is always a good practice, science suggests that spending time outdoors is very important to our overall well-being. We like to lock ourselves inside our office buildings and comfy houses and deny the fact that we’re even part of the natural world, but it seems like denying this connection only works to our detriment. So, if you consider yourself more of a couch potato than intrepid explorer, don’t worry; you don’t have to set out on an “Into the Wild” style trek to get the benefits of nature. Try spending an extra 15 minutes outside every day by going on a walk at lunch or...
