moreby Andrew Trunsky   A new study suggests that the child tax credit (CTC) is not reducing overall employment nationwide but is driving some low and middle-income parents away from their private sector jobs and toward self-employment. The study, led by researchers at the Washington University in St. Louis’ Social Policy Institute and Appalachian State University and provided exclusively to the Daily Caller News Foundation, found that the monthly payments had barely any impact on the job market whatsoever, contradicting concerns that the tax credits would worsen the labor shortage. It also found that adults were far less likely to list child care as a reason for unemployment, with the share of people saying so dropping from 26% to below 20% once they began receiving the payments. The new study also appears to contradict a recent study that projected as many as 1.5 million workers, or 2.6% of the national workforce, would ultimately exit the labor market while receiving payments. “Our research suggests that the expanded CTC is helping low and middle-income families to meet both short-term and long-term needs,” Dr. Leah Hamilton, an associate...

The study, provided exclusively to the Daily Caller News Foundation, found that the monthly payments had barely any impact on the job market whatsoever, contradicting concerns that the tax credits would worsen the labor shortage. The CTC also drove people away from private sector jobs and toward self-employment and non-profits, the study showed, with the shift among recipients earning less than $50,000 annually being the most pronounced. “Our research suggests that the expanded CTC is helping low and middle-income families to meet both short-term and long-term needs,” said Dr. Leah Hamilton, an associate professor of social work at Appalachian State who helped lead the study. Three major Covid programs by the federal government came to an end, including a weekly boost of $300. Whether you're struggling to find a job or not, you may want to consider claiming support under SEAP instead. What is the Self-Employment Assistance Program? SEAP allows jobless workers who meet certain requirements to start their own business while collecting unemployment insurance benefits. Per the federal requirements issued as part of the Continued Assistance Act of 2020, the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) is requiring individuals who received Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits on or after December 27, 2020, to provide proof of employment/self-employment or a valid offer to begin employment and proof of wages by August 14, 2021. While PUA claimants were previously only required to provide proof of wages documentation, this new federal requirement to provide proof of employment documentation is a fraud prevention measure. “This is a requirement we believe should have been included in the original CARES Act legislation,” said Commissioner of Labor Mark Butler. “Instead, Congress waited nine months into the pandemic to require the additional documentation confusing many claimants who believed they had already fulfilled the obligation. However, in an effort to authenticate these federal payments, we are asking that PUA claimants make sure these documents have been uploaded to avoid an overpayment situation.” Claimants must provide proof that they were employed/self-employed and earned wages at some point...
The number of Louisiana residents making new claims for unemployment rose slightly last week, though the number of continued claims for state benefits fell, the Louisiana Workforce Commission reported Friday. Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending March 6 rose to 7,100, compared with 6,981 the previous week. For a comparison from before the COVID-19 pandemic, during the week ending March 7, 2020, 1,698 initial claims were filed. Continued claims for the week ending March 6 decreased to 48,016 from the previous week’s total of 53,212. There were 14,199 continued claims for the week ending March 7, 2020, the LWC reported. The number of Louisiana residents filing new claims for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance went up during the week ending March 6, from 769 the previous week to 1,175, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. PUA is for workers such as independent contractors who don’t qualify for state benefits. The number of Louisiana residents making continued claims for Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation went up during the week ending Feb. 20, the most-recent week the federal...
The government, the unions and the employers have finally reached an agreement on the law that will govern the employment situation of the riders. This was announced by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy late on Wednesday. The pact recognizes the presumption of employment for workers who provide paid pay-as-you-go services through companies that manage this work through a digital platform. In addition, the legal representation of the workers must be informed of the rules contained in the algorithms and artificial intelligence systems that can affect the working conditions by which the platforms are governed, including access and maintenance of employment and the preparation of profiles. Recently a headline caught our attention: “In Spain, and thanks to women, there are nearly 100,000 more self-employed than a decade ago”. Their incorporation has more than compensated for the drop in the affiliation of self-employed men. The headline is motivating. There has never been such a high participation of women in the labor market, whose incorporation has allowed economic and social development. Its incorporation is a fact, as well as its constant reinvention in the search of its vital project. “The full incorporation of digitization into self-employment is essential, and even more so with teleworking” However, despite this, gender inequality is manifesting itself again. Entrepreneurship, self-employment, is neither easy nor, in many cases, voluntary. According to Eurostat, Spain has one of the highest rates of self-employment. 21.7% are involuntary. In the EU 16.9%. Surely there will be a variety of causes, but no one is aware that cost savings by companies has something to do with it. The 2012 labor reform of the Popular Party and the consequent job insecurity. Nor is it the case that self-employment is...
Unlike many sectors hit by the Covid-19 epidemic, freelance employment is not experiencing the crisis. These workers who offer freelance assignments have indeed seen their number grow by 11% in 2020, according to a study carried out last June by BCG and the Malt platform. They are now just over 1 million, or 98,000 more than in 2019. And for good reason: freelancers are used to teleworking and the increased use of digital technology. Since then, this status has attracted both employees and companies. A guarantee of autonomy for some and flexibility for others, self-employment has also been driven by the digitization of the economy and the need for digital skills. LeHibou, Club Freelance, Indépendant.io … Freelancing platforms then adapted their offers to support the growth of this market. The Covid crisis has not damaged the entrepreneurial spirit of the French or the desire to work for themselves. On the contrary, self-employed status peaked in 2020, bringing together 3.6 million people. In detail, 547,900 new auto-entrepreneurs have started this year according to INSEE. If you became a gig worker during the pandemic, beware: Your taxes just got more complicated. Gig work — Uber driving, Instacart shopping, Amazon Flex delivery and so on — is on-demand, freelance work that’s typically taxed as self-employment. Instead of having an employer withhold money from your paycheck, you’re an independent contractor who is expected to pay taxes on your gig income as you earn it. You’ll also owe a larger share of your pay to Social Security and Medicare taxes. On the plus side, you may have more opportunities to deduct your expenses and save for retirement than you do as a W-2 employee. SELF-EMPLOYMENT TAXES ARE A MYSTERY TO MANY About half of U.S. adults say they don’t have a good understanding of the tax implications of freelance or gig work, according to a recent NerdWallet survey. Yet this type of work was a growing part of the U.S. economy even before the pandemic upended people’s work lives. A survey last summer by Upwork, a freelance job platform, found 59 million Americans — or 36% of...

Here’s How to Reduce Self-Employment Taxes This story originally appeared on SmartAsset.com. The self-employment (SE) tax is the equivalent of the tax regular employees and their employers pay. It’s the way self-employed people, freelancers and independent contractors contribute to the Social Security and Medicare funds. With a tax rate of 15.3% applying to everything self-employed workers earn, SE tax can add up to a lot. In some cases, SE tax is more than income tax. That means reducing SE tax is an important financial consideration for self-employed taxpayers. Here’s how to do it. It’s not the usual blah, blah, blah. A self-employed hairdresser has won the right to claim for notice, holiday and redundancy pay in what her lawyers claim is a landmark case for thousands of beauty industry workers. Meghan Gorman, 26, won an Employment Tribunal judgment in her favour after arguing that, although she had a contract as a self-employed hairdresser, the amount of control over her working practices effectively made her an employee. Ms Gorman, from Clitheroe, Lancs, claimed she had to work the hours set by the salon, who kept 67% of her takings. She worked for six years at a Terence Paul salon in Manchester city centre until it closed in 2019.Meghan argued that although she had a contract as a self-employed hairdresser the amount of control over her working practices effectively made her an employee (Image: PA)Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated ArticlesHer lawyers claim the judgment in her favour, following an Employment Tribunal hearing in Manchester, furthers recent legal decisions on “worker” status in the case of Pimlico Plumbers at the Supreme Court and Uber drivers, currently on appeal from the Court of Appeal.
