By Nathaniel Meyersohn | CNN Chances are, you’ve been there: You head to Trader Joe’s to buy caramel popcorn, churro bites and roasted gorgonzola crackers, or to Costco for its Kirkland Signature mini peanut butter cups and take-and-bake pizza. But when you get to the store, your favorite treats aren’t on the shelf. And, to your horror, you learn it they’re not coming back. They’ve been discontinued. It’s one of the most disappointing experiences as a grocery shopper. Why a beloved product has disappeared ranks as one of the most common questions customers ask stores. Fans run social media accounts dedicated to tracking discontinued products at Trader Joe’s, and others blog about long-lost items at Costco. “We understand that it can be disappointing — devastating, even,” Trader Joe’s says on its “discontinued product feedback” contact page for customers. There are several reasons Trader Joe’s, Costco and other stores suddenly stop selling customer favorites. Sometimes products are seasonal, or a manufacturer always planned to make them for a limited time. Also, for stores like Costco and Trader Joe’s, discontinuing items can...
COSTCO has pulled a very popular product from its shelves - and shoppers are unlikely to welcome the change. The mega-chain has reportedly scrapped books from a number of its warehouses, meaning customers will have one less way to entertain themselves over the holidays. 1 It's understood stores in Hawaii, where Costco has seven warehouses, and Alaska, where the wholesaler has four, will stop selling books all together. Costco media buyer, Alexandria Kanenwishera, announced the news to distributors back in September, Honolulu Civil Beat reports. Management in Hawaii pointed to slipping sales as the reason, but Bennett Hymer, owner of Hawaii-based publisher Mutual Publishing, claimed otherwise. Mr Hymer said: "Costco told our office that the elimination of books in its stores had to do with the expense of shipping to Hawaii and Alaska, but that makes no sense because Hawaii published books were delivered locally, not shipped in." Costco chief financial officer Richard Galanti explained in the conference call that Costco hasn’t reached its usual step for an increase. “If you look at June of ’17, plus five years and seven months, you’re talking roughly January ’23,” he told investors and staff. He continued that although he isn't suggesting they wait to increase the prices until January of 2023, but the mark they were striving toward still isn't quite there yet. Christmas trees and other festive products have already surfaced at stores across the US four months ahead of the holiday - a premature start to the shopping season that comes as Americans feeling the strain of inflation look to stretch their budgets. Shoppers were surprised this month when photos of the trees popped up on social media - causing many to question why the evergreens, commonly associated with the holidays, were being shilled in the dog days of summer. Costco, Sam's Club, and Walmart were among the several stores to stage the seemingly premature displays in August - with hardware giant Home Depot rolling out holiday items as early as mid-July. Still 118 days away, the holiday to some may seem, at best, on the horizon - while others have slammed the early stocking as 'madness' and a 'money grab' amid recent economic turmoil seen across the US. Conversely, some shrewd shoppers have embraced the early stocking - taking advantage of deals being offered by the outlets to provide consumers incentive to buy the trees earlier than one might initially prefer....

Costco will soon require all shoppers to cover their faces in its stores — even those who say they can’t wear masks for medical reasons. The wholesale chain says anyone with a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a standard face mask will have to don a face shield while they shop. Costco had previously allowed a medical exemption to the mask mandate it imposed in May, but the company reversed course amid a record-setting surge in coronavirus infections across the US. Children younger than 2 can still go mask-free under the tweaked policy, which takes effect Nov. 16. “This updated policy may seem inconvenient to some, however we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience,” Costco CEO Craig Jelinek said in a note to shoppers dated Tuesday. Costco provoked outrage from some customers when it started requiring masks, which are considered essential to slowing the spread of COVID-19. The move reportedly led to boycott threats from some Costco members, who pay an annual fee to shop there. But other big retail chains including Walmart, Target and...
Costco changed its face mask policy earlier this week, and now all customers, even those with medical conditions, are required to wear face coverings. The policy change was announced Tuesday by company officials in a release on its website. The change will go into effect beginning Monday. All Costco members, guests and employees are required to wear a face mask and face shield when shopping at the locations. The company said only those abiding by the rule will be able to enter the stores. Costco members who can’t wear a face mask due to medical conditions are no longer exempt from the policy. Company officials said if a member has a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a face mask, they must wear a face shield. The only exception to the face-covering requirement are children under the age of 2. “This updated policy may seen inconvenient to some, however we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience,” President and CEO Craig Jelinek said in a statement. “Our goal is to continue to provide a safe shopping environment for...
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Costco Wholesale shoppers will be required to wear a face-covering starting despite having a medical exemption, the company announced. In a letter to members, Costco President and CEO Craig Jelinek said, “Effective Nov. 16, 2020, we will require all members, guests and employees to wear a face mask or face shield at Costco locations. Entry to Costco will only be granted to those wearing a face mask or face shield. Children under the age of 2 are exempt.” Since May 4, 2020, Costco has had a face mask policy in effect, but members who could not wear a mask due to a medical condition were exempt. “This is no longer the case,” Jelinek wrote. “If a member has a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a mask, they must wear a face shield at Costco.” “The updated policy may seem inconvenient to some, however, we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience. Our goal is to continue to provide a safe shopping environment for our members and guests, and to provide a safe work...

But since the coronavirus pandemic hit the US, Instacart and other grocery delivery companies have been thriving. Instacart hired 300,000 shoppers in March and then another 250,000 shoppers in April to keep up with the demand. Today, Instacart operates at Aldi, Target, Costco, Albertsons, Kroger and Walmart’s Sam’s Club, among smaller stores. The company is worth $14 billion, according to CNN business. “The new partnership brings thousands of items — from groceries, alcohol and pantry staples to home decor and improvement, personal care, electronics and more — at everyday low prices from Walmart stores to customers’ doors in as fast as an hour,” an Instacart spokesperson said in a statement. The partnership makes both Walmart and Instacart stronger in opposition to Amazon and Whole Foods. In his July 29 testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos cited Walmart and Instacart as major competitors. “Every day, Amazon competes against large, established players like Target, Costco, Kroger, and, of course, Walmart,” Bezos said. “… We also face new competition from the likes of Shopify and Instacart.”
