BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The superintendent of Louisiana State Police acknowledges he was pulled over for speeding in an unmarked work vehicle but did not receive a ticket from one of his own officers. Col. Lamar Davis told WAFB-TV in an interview Friday that he accepts responsibility but does not remember how fast he was driving. A state trooper pulled Davis over June 28 on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge along Interstate 10 west of Baton Rouge. “I was simply wrong in that situation,” Davis said. “There is no excuse for it, other than I need to slow my butt down.” The head of Louisiana State Police public affairs, Capt. Nick Manale, said the trooper “utilized his discretion and did not issue a citation.” Manale said the trooper did not make notes about how fast Davis was driving in the area where the speed limit was 60 mph (96 kph). WAFB requested a copy of the trooper’s body camera footage through a public records request. On Thursday, Louisiana State Police released the trooper’s body camera footage and a snippet of...

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) — St. Paul are struggling to deal with speeding drivers. Cars are going too fast on main thoroughfares and in residential neighborhoods, but fewer speeding citations are being handed out than in years past. Graeme Webster, who lives with his family near Cleveland and Grand, is doing what he can to rid his neighborhood of speeders. Webster puts out a plastic crossing guard that says “SLOW” when his kids play, and he’s given “20 is Plenty” yard signs to neighbors. “We are well aware that speeding is an issue in our city,” said Sgt. Natalie Davis with the St. Paul Police Department. St. Paul police respond to areas where there are complaints, but Davis says the department’s down about 100 officers. Last year, SPPD’s traffic unit was disbanded. “We are able to still focus on some speeding efforts through overtime and grant money, so people are still getting cited, but the numbers have decreased,” Davis said. There were fewer than 3,000 citations issued last year, down from 11,000 in 2017. There weren’t even 900 citations in...
A real estate developer who's been nabbed for speeding six times in the past year has been identified as the BMW driver who struck and killed a 99-year-old Holocaust survivor in Brooklyn. Pyotr Yadgarov, 52, was driving along Oriental Boulevard last Saturday about 4.45 p.m. when he struck Jack Mikulincer, who was riding his electric wheelchair to a nearby synagogue for Sabbath.  A search of Yadgarov's license plate revealed six tickets for driving too fast in school zones last year, the New York Daily News reported.  Since 2020, the plate was linked to 10 speed camera tickets and four infractions for failing to stop at a red light, the outlet said. Yadgarov, who manages the real estate development firm Pye Properties Inc., rejected a request for comment from DailyMail.com.  He remained on scene following the collision. The NYPD did not respond to a query. Police have not said whether speed was a factor in Saturday's accident, which was witnessed by Mikulincer's longtime friend Jehuda Lindenblatt, also a Holocaust survivor.  Holocaust survivor Jack Mikulincer, 99, was riding his electric wheelchair to a nearby...
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A Los Angeles City Councilman has proposed allocating funding towards tackling the issue of street racing in the San Fernando Valley. L.A. City Councilman Bob Blumenfield announced Wednesday he will allocate $100,000 from his office’s discretionary funds to pay police overtime to support specialized enforcement against street racing and speeding in his district, which includes the neighborhoods of Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Reseda and Canoga Park. Blumenfield said the $100,000 would be used to support LAPD overtime costs for specialized enforcement by the LAPD Operations Valley Bureau to target areas of organized racing and speeding over the next five months. The chosen areas include Vanalden Avenue from Gleneagles Drive to Ventura Boulevard, Valley Circle Boulevard and Victory Boulevard, and other Council District 3 locations that Blumenfield said are used for street racing or frequent speeding. “I have constituents who are often woken up in the middle of the night by a half dozen cars going three times the speed limit, screeching around turns in what were recently quiet neighborhoods. PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Motorists put the pedal to the metal during the pandemic and police are worried as roads get busy with the final stretch of summer travel. The latest data shows the number of highway deaths in 2020 was the greatest in more than a decade even though cars and trucks drove fewer miles during the pandemic. “Summer is an incredibly dangerous time. And it culminates with Labor Day, that last hurrah,” said Pam Shadel Fischer of the Governors Highway Safety Association. Traffic data indicates the higher death toll was related to higher average speeds in conjunction with more of those on the roads driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and a slight decline in seatbelt use. Motorists do not seem to be slowing down. “People are flying down the roads,” Maine State Police Cpl. Doug Cropper said of summer traffic on Interstate 95. “It’s just ridiculous.” Tickets issued by the California Highway Patrol for speeding in excess of 100 mph from January to June were nearly double pre-pandemic levels, and the number of tickets for...

(CBS4) – The Colorado Department of Transportation and Colorado State Patrol are asking drivers to slow down on Interstate 70’s mountain corridor in Summit County. Speeding is happening through construction zones near Silverthorne. That creates dangerous working conditions, especially at night, for those I-70 improvements that start around Frisco. Two crashes in the paving work zone have already happened and there have been several near misses. Officials are asking drivers to watch out for the postings about lowered speed limits and avoid distractions to stay alert in that area. “Unfortunately, we’ve witnessed a pattern of unsafe behavior in this area and we implore drivers — including cars and trucks alike — to slow down in this work zone so our crews can get the projects done safely,” CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew said in a prepared statement.

Q: With so many complaining about speeding on our freeways, it reminded me about a solution that was put into existence several years ago. The Fab 5! Do you remember them, Gary? Just knowing that they were lurking in the shadows along Highway 85 put the fear of God into those crazy speeders. Sure would be nice to resurrect them again. Daniel Chapman, Santa Clara  Like Mr. Roadshow’s Facebook page for more questions and answers about Bay Area roads, freeways and commuting. A: Truer words have seldom been spoken. The CHP set up a five-person motorcycle team from 2007 to 2012 to crack down on speeders on South Bay freeways. The Fab Five was a Roadshow favorite, bringing order to the speeding crisis. They had a field day, issuing more than 11,000 tickets in 2008, or more than double the 4,155 handed out the previous year by the entire 70-plus San Jose division. Better yet, drivers quickly learned this was not an area to race at high speeds and began slowing down. The CHP told stories of ticketing motorists...
TWO hot models go topless in a bid to slow down speeding traffic in Russia. The girls posed wearing nothing but underwear and knee-high boots as they held up signs at passing cars. 2Credit: Unknown - check original source The stunt - which was supported by local cops in the Nizhniy Novgorod area, east of Moscow - was intended to cut speeds by catching the attention of drivers. And according to news outlets in Russia, it was a success - although most of those who slowed down were men. The topless girls sprang into action every time a vehicle passed going at more than 40mph - the maximum limit in Russian cities. The trial was said to be the idea of the public organisation 'Autodvijenie' ahead of September 1 rule changes which mean drivers will only face fines if they exceed limits by 20km/h instead of the existing 10 km/h ruling. Last year traffic cops in the Baltic coast region of Kaliningrad sent out female officers dressed as angels in stilettos after a string of drink drive crash deaths. 2
