OAKLAND — A Berkeley man was sentenced to six years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of three pistols allegedly found during a search of his grandmother’s home.

Reginald Patillo, 38, was sentenced in late June by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White. The defense asked for a five-year prison term while federal prosecutors asked for White to sentence Patillo to 105 months, court records show.

Patillo is serving his sentence in USP Victorville, according to Bureau of Prisons records.

Patillo was arrested last year in Vallejo in connection with the search warrant of his grandmother’s Berkeley home. Authorities say he was the suspected driver in a nonfatal shooting in May 2021, near San Pablo Park in Berkeley.

“(Patillo’s) conduct in repeatedly carrying illegal firearms and serving as the driver in an afternoon shooting significantly contributes to the dangerous conditions this violence presents for his fellow citizens,” assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Kane wrote in a sentencing memo. “Those potential victims include not only the intended targets of violence but also the children who play at the San Pablo playground and the neighbors who frequent the park’s sports facilities.”

Patillo’s attorney, assistant federal public defender Jerome Matthews, described him as an “empathetic, giving” person who had witnessed violence throughout his life, including being shot at.

“The violence to which Mr. Patillo has been exposed was not limited to his household. He witnessed his aunt’s boyfriend stab a person to death over a drug deal gone bad,” Matthews wrote. “He has had friends and a member of his family shot at and/or murdered.”

Matthews’ sentencing memo included several support letters from friends and family.

“Although Reginald has gotten into so many mishaps in his life… I know Reginald a wonderful and beautiful person,” his mother wrote in a letter to White.

Crime and Public Safety | Man shoots California woman with own gun, takes child hostage

PALMDALE  — A man who forced his way into a Southern California home shot a woman with her own gun and then held her young daughter at gunpoint before surrendering to police, authorities said Monday.

Erin Mauldin, 34, was arrested Sunday after he heeded orders to put down the gun in Palmdale, north of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping. He was jailed on $1 billion bail and it wasn’t immediately whether he had an attorney to speak for him.

The woman was entering her apartment at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday when the man asked if he could enter because someone was chasing him, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

When she refused, he forced his way inside and tried to attack her with a hammer, authorities said.

The woman ran into her bedroom and got a gun but the man overpowered her, took the weapon and shot her, authorities said.

The woman apparently received only a flesh wound, a neighbor who identified herself only as Destiny told KABC-TV.

“Once he shot her, he dragged her out the house and that’s how she got downstairs,” she said. “Once she got downstairs, she was able to get away from him.”

After the shooting, the gunman took the woman’s approximately 10-year-old daughter hostage, running down the street chased by her father, authorities said.

The father backed off when the man pointed the gun at him, and when deputies arrived the man held a gun to her head before obeying orders to drop the weapon, authorities said.

The girl’s mother was hospitalized in stable condition.

Deputies said it doesn’t appear the man knew the victim.
