Survival games have been popular for a few years now with the likes of “Rust,” “Subnautic” and “Ark” gaining followings. Most of those titles have sci-fi or post-apocalyptic themes, so when Matrioshka Games developed its project “Expedition Agartha,” the team opted for a different approach.
Instead of characters having guns or high-tech weaponry, the team opted to give “Expedition Agartha” a medieval setting.
Players will head on ships to explore a mysterious island in the Lost Continent of Mu and battle creatures, bandits and each other with swords, shields and bows and arrows. The project is billed as a multiplayer medieval hardcore looter survival game. That’s an ambitious mix of genres. Players jump into the island, enter raids, gather resources, complete quests and extract to safety. The experience can be solo or they can team up in a three-person party. During expeditions, they can hunt other players or build alliances.
It’s a high-risk, high-reward undertaking because if players die on a trek through the island, they could lose gear. One of the elements that could make expeditions fairer is that combat is skill-based, so if players can successfully use light and heavy attacks along with dodges and blocks, they can survive against someone who may not be as good at combat. That could all go out the window if they face multiple attackers though.
While that PvP experience may not appeal to some, the game lets players explore as a Freebooter where expeditions have free low-tier equipment and no progression. Those who want to get the full experience will have to go in as a Mercenary but that opens them up to the dangers of losing gear but at least players can use their own equipment and have skill progression.
The game will have an Early Access launch on Steam on Aug. 18.
