CHICAGO (AP) — The Boston Red Sox placed pitcher Rich Hill on the 15-day injured list because of a sprained left knee and recalled reliever Phillips Valdéz from Triple-A Worcester before their game against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

Hill (4-4, 4.20 ERA) exited Friday’s game against the Cubs during the three-run fifth, and Chicago rallied to beat the Red Sox 6-5.

The 42-year-old left-hander walked P.J. Higgins leading off before Nelson Velázquez tripled and scored on a groundout by Christopher Morel.

Hill was visited by an athletic trainer and exited after hitting Patrick Wisdom to load the bases with two out.

Hill said he “felt great” before the fifth.

“Unfortunately, I put us in a tough position, and that’s what makes me sick to my stomach,” he said. “But overall, before that point, the ball was coming out well.”

He allowed three runs and three hits. He walked four and struck out three.

Valdéz went 0-1 with a 5.40 in 11 appearances with Boston this season. The right-hander is 0-0 with a 4.26 ERA with Worcester.

Tim Anderson has his left hand examined, and Chicago White Sox expect an update later today: Were definitely concerned

All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson had his left hand examined after last weekend’s series against the Texas Rangers, the Chicago White Sox announced Tuesday.

The team anticipates updating Anderson’s status later Tuesday.

“My understanding is he’s getting examined,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said before Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. “We’ll know something about it by the end of the first game.

“We’re definitely concerned. We’ll see what that exam says.”

Bally Sports/Stadium’s Russell Dorsey reported Anderson will be out four to six weeks with a torn ligament in his hand.

Anderson looked at his hand after checking his swing on the second pitch of a ninth-inning at-bat Saturday against the Rangers. He grounded out to third on the next pitch.

He began serving a two-game suspension in Sunday’s series finale at Globe Life Field. The suspension — originally three games for making contact with plate umpire Nick Mahrley on July 29 against the Oakland Athletics — concluded with Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Anderson is slashing .301/.339/.395 with 13 doubles, six home runs, 25 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 79 games. He’s eighth in the American League in batting average.

Leury García has filled in at shortstop during the suspension, and the Sox recalled infielder Lenyn Sosa from Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday.
