(CNN) — Uvalde school district police chief Pedro “Pete” Arredondo has resigned his separate position on the Uvalde city council in the wake of the massacre at Robb Elementary School in May, according to a resignation letter he sent to the city.

“After much consideration, it is in the best interest of the community to step down as a member of the City Council for District 3 to minimize further distractions,” Arredondo said in the letter.

“The Mayor, the City Council, and the City Staff must continue to move forward to unite our community, once again.”

Uvalde city officials confirmed they received the resignation letter Saturday. The Uvalde Leader-News first reported about the resignation.

Arredondo’s role in the police response to the May 24 shooting — in which a gunman entered adjoining classrooms and killed 19 children and two teachers — has been under intense public scrutiny and criticism from the Texas Department of Public Safety. That’s in part because more than an hour elapsed before officers entered the classrooms and killed the gunman.

Arredondo was placed on leave from his job as school district police chief by the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District last week.

Arredondo’s resignation from the city council “is the right thing to do,” the city had said in an earlier news release Saturday responding to the Leader-News’ report, but prior to receiving the chief’s resignation letter.

Arredondo had been elected to the Uvalde City Council on May 7, just weeks before the massacre. He was sworn in to the council position a week later.

CNN reached out to Arredondo’s attorney Saturday for comment.

In his letter, Arredondo said that “as we continue to grieve over the tragedy that occurred on May 24th, we pray for the families affected and our entire community.”

“Uvalde has a rich history of loving and supporting thy neighbor and we must continue to do so. In speaking with other communities that have had similar tragedies, the guidance has been the same — continue to support the families, continue to support our community and, above all, to keep strong in our faith,” he wrote.

“As I think about my life, from growing up as a child and into adulthood, Uvalde has held an attraction that is incredibly unique. At the center of that attraction, is our community members. Together, we will keep Uvalde strong,” the latter added.

Police response was an ‘abject failure,’ Texas Department of Public Safety director said

Arredondo, the chief of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Department since March 2020, was identified by state authorities as the on-scene commander during the shooting.

Several law enforcement officers arrived at the school within minutes but allowed the gunman to remain in the classrooms for 77 minutes until they finally entered and killed him, according to a timeline from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), which is leading a review of the incident. The lengthy delay contradicted widely taught protocol for active shooter situations that call for police to immediately stop the threat and came even as children inside repeatedly called 911 and begged for help.

In a hearing before the Texas Senate last week, DPS director Col. Steven McCraw called the police response an “abject failure” and placed sole blame on Arredondo.

“Three minutes after the subject entered the West building, there was a sufficient number of armed officers wearing body armor to isolate, distract and neutralize the subject,” McCraw said. “The only thing stopping the hallway of dedicated officers from entering rooms 111 and 112 was the on-scene commander, who decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children.”

Other officials have questioned McCraw’s motivations in blaming Arredondo, given that dozens of law enforcement officers from an array of departments responded to the scene. Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin said McCraw has continued to “lie, leak, mislead or misstate information in order to distance his own troopers and (Texas) Rangers from the response.”

Arredondo, who has worked in law enforcement for nearly 30 years, has not spoken substantively to the public about his decision-making that day, but he told the Texas Tribune in an interview that he did not consider himself the on-scene commander.

However, at least one of the responding officers expressed the belief that Arredondo was leading the law enforcement response inside the school, telling others, “the chief is in charge,” according to the DPS timeline.

Arredondo also told the Texas Tribune he did not instruct officers to refrain from breaching the classrooms.

In the wake of the release of the DPS timeline and further details about the law enforcement response, Uvalde CISD superintendent Hal Harrell placed Arredondo on leave from his position as school police chief on June 22.

“Because of the lack of clarity that remains and the unknown timing of when I will receive the results of the investigations, I have made the decision to place Chief Arredondo on administrative leave effective on this date,” Harrell wrote in the announcement.

As for Arredondo’s brief time on the city council, he had not yet attended any public meeting. Council members unanimously voted to deny him a leave of absence from future sessions, leaving open the possibility that he could have been removed from office if he continued to miss meetings.

Fans Plead for Newly Single Comedian to Be the Next ‘Bachelor’

ABC The Bachelor set.

It’s no secret that many fans of “The Bachelor” franchise have not been happy with the way things have been going. Since the next leading role on “The Bachelor” series is still up for grabs, fans have been making their voices heard about who they think should take on the coveted role.  Suggestions have ranged from surfer John Paul Jones, most known for his stint in “Bachelor in Paradise” to fan favorite, Tyler Cameron, who has been asked, but he refuses.

In fact, the runner up from Hannah Brown’s season said on an August 13, 2021 Arthur Kade podcast, “I made the joke before going on the show with my buddies that I’m going to get second and become the Bachelor. It happened. I got second and I got offered it, but I was like, ‘Nah, this isn’t my world.’” So, the search continues.

Why Viewers Want Kim Kardashian’s Ex, Pete Davidson, to Be the Next ‘Bachelor’ View this post on Instagram

Recently, a Reddit thread posed the idea that ABC look outside the Bachelor franchise and cast recently-single, A-list celebrity, Pete Davidson, in the Bachelor role. Fans reactions were mostly ecstatic.

“Would 1000% watch” one commenter posted. Another wrote, “Omg!! He would be hilarious and so much fun!!! Imagine the drama trying to get his attention.”

“Would love to see what all the hype is about haha. Ariana, Kim K, man gets around haha” one poster wrote, referring to his previous romantic relationships with Ariana Grande and Kim Kardashian. Another poster pointed out that the “Saturday Night Live” alum also dated Kate Beckinsale, who is “the ultimate catch.”

One commenter would love “to be a fly on the wall for those fantasy suites,” while another remarked “I need this s***post to become a reality.”

One poster joked, “They could get Kanye to host the inevitable roast date.” It’s unlikely that that will happen, considering that Davidson’s breakup with the rapper’s ex-wife is still fresh, and the bad blood between Kanye and Davidson seems to be intensifying.

Kanye’s Threats Have Really Gotten to Davidson View this post on Instagram

According to Us Weekly, Davidson “is undergoing trauma therapy after Kanye West’s threatening social media posts.”  The outlet reports, “The Saturday Night Live alum, 28, has decided to seek treatment in large part due to violent posts shared by the Yeezy designer, 45, over the course of his relationship with Kardashian, 41.”

Us Weekly further reports that three days after the amicable breakup between Davidson and Kardashian, West posted a mock New York Times newspaper pic on Instagram with the headline, “Skete Davidson Is Dead at Age 28.”  This is just one of many allegedly ‘prank’ threats West has made toward Davidson since he started dating Kardashian.

A Strong Case for Davidson View this post on Instagram

It is unclear whether or not Davidson would be willing or wanting to be the next Bachelor, since he has not been asked as of yet. However, Screen Rant’s Maggie Mead, has made a very compelling case. She writes, “After the end of his most recent high-profile relationship, Pete Davidson could be a riveting lead of The Bachelor, if ABC wishes to continue its recent trend of non-traditional seasons.”

Mead continues, “There’s a lot that Pete brings to the table if he were to be named the lead. Pete is undeniably charismatic and funny in a relatable self-deprecating way. He also gives off a laid back vibe, and he has scores of fans who find him extremely attractive. But there are also reports that despite his fame Pete remains genuine and grounded.”

According to Mead, “These qualities would make Pete both entertaining and likable as the Bachelor, which is exactly what viewers are looking for in a lead. Pete is said to be very relationship-minded, so it seems he could be ready to settle down with the right partner. There would no doubt be tons of women who would jump at the chance to date Pete, and after his turbulent history dating A-listers, Pete might be eager to date someone more down-to-earth.”
