New York Mets fans better prepare for the worst-case scenario should Jacob deGrom opt out.
Injured New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom could opt out of his contract after the end of the season.
While deGrom has not pitched for the Mets since last year, the four-time All-Star has won two NL Cy Young Awards and took home Rookie of the Year honors in a New York uniform. However, the 34-year-old right-hander has had a hard time staying healthy. As dominant as he has been, it may keep him out of Cooperstown, much like his former teammate, David Wright. What if he opts out?
ESPN’s Buster Olney dropped an absolute bombshell of a tweet on Saturday afternoon with, “there is a perception in some corners of the industry that if Jacob deGrom follows through with what he said in the spring and opts out of his Mets’ contract, the [Atlanta] Braves will be the favorites to land him.”
Though the Mets are arch rivals with the Atlanta Braves, deGrom grew up in Braves Country. He played his college baseball at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, the hometown of none other than Chipper Jones. DeGrom pitching for the Braves would have to make Mets fans sick to their stomaches. This would be equivalent of Braves fans watching Tom Glavine pitching for the Mets.
Would deGrom really turn heel on the Mets to sign presumably a one-year contract with Atlanta?

Jacob deGrom may opt out of New York Mets deal and sign with Atlanta Braves
As hilarious as it would be to see deGrom win games for the only team that matters, I hate seeing players leave the only franchise they have ever known in free agency. I would be a total hypocrite to say otherwise. As painful as the Freddie Freeman departure was, baseball at its core is a business. The question is if deGrom opting out makes sense for him financially. That is unlikely.
DeGrom has a no-trade clause in his Mets contract and a player opt-out built in for 2022. He had one baked in as well after the 2021 MLB season, but decided to stay put with the Mets. DeGrom is slated to make $30.5 million in 2023 and $32.5 million in 2024 should New York exercise its club option. If he plays out his deal, deGrom will hit free agency in 2025 at age-37.
In short, deGrom is not getting a multi-year deal as rich with the Braves as the one he has with the Mets. Atlanta may be more willing to spend money at this stage of its competitive life cycle, but can still be outbid by bigger market teams, such as the Mets. Financially, it does not any sense at all to walk away from that guaranteed money from the Mets. Then again, deGrom might want out.
If deGrom opts out and signs with the arch rival Braves, expect all of Mets Twitter to catch on fire.Related Story Mets: 3 division rivals they should trade for right now

His Instagram message came days after the former couple welcomed their second child together.5Tristan Thompson fired out shocking 'warning’ to ex Khloe Kardashian under this photoCredit: Instagram/ Tristan Thompson 5The former couple welcomed their second child via surrogate just days agoCredit: Getty
Tristan, 31, posed for a fashion photo on his page but the caption was not exactly buttoned up.
He wore a patterned shirt and staring down the camera with multiple gold necklaces.
And the NBA star tossed up some seemingly pointed words.
"I never switched sides, I switched lanes. I got wiser and realize we aren't all built the same #DontTryMe," he ominously wrote.Read more on the KardashiansHAPPY BIRK-DAY! Fans immediately thought of Khloe Kardashian, 38.
"Tristan please," one Instagrammer commented nearly instantly.
"You switched baby mommas" accused another.
"This is very toxic sir," wrote a third.

Just weeks ago, Khloe and her ex Tristan welcomed a baby boy via a surrogate.
The reality star is still reeling from Tristan's betrayal, when he cheated on her and fathered a baby with a personal trainer.
The baby was conceived shortly before Khloe learned that Tristan had cheated on her with his third baby mama, Maralee Nichols, 31, back in December.
After her heartbreak, Khloe reportedly fought for full custody of the newborn, which gives her overall control of where and when the NBA player can see his son.
Tristan fathered a child with Maralee as a result of his affair, and Khloe ended her relationship with him for good after learning the news.
Khloe and the NBA star had been dating on and off from 2016 to 2021.
According to HollywoodLife, the parents came to the strict custody agreement for their baby boy after his birth on Aug. 5.
According to the outlet: “Khloe and Tristan have agreed that Khloe will have sole legal and physical custody of their baby full time," a source told the site. "However, Tristan is so excited to have welcomed a son because he really wanted another boy.
"Even though Khloe will have full custody of the baby, she’s more than happy for Tristan to be present in their child’s life as much as he wants."
Reps for both Khloe and Tristan did not respond to The U.S. Sun's request for comment.MAMA DRAMA
But that doesn't mean she can keep their newborn son from meeting Tristan's other children with his various baby mamas.
Tristan now has four children from three different women.
Tristan and Khloe also share daughter True, 4.
He also has a son Prince, 5, with his ex-Jordan Craig, whom he reportedly left while she was pregnant, to be with Khloe.
And Theo, whom he shares with Marilee.
Despite revealing that he is in fact that father of Maralee's child Theo, she claims he is not involved in his son's life - he hasn't met him and is refusing to pay child support for him.Read More on The US SunDANGEROUS COMBO Party where teen disappeared 'crashed by men giving away shrooms & cocaine'LOVE MACHINE I flirted with Mark Zuckerberg's AI – it rejected me but 'likes guys & girls'
