Braves pitcher after series loss to Mets: ‘See what things are like in October’

Braves pitcher Spencer Strider isn’t hitting the panic button after the Mets won the series against Atlanta, pointing to October as the true test.

Coming out of the MLB trade deadline, the Braves had a huge opportunity to close in on the Mets in the chase for the NL East lead.

After five games and four losses, they’re significantly further behind than they planned.

For pitcher Spencer Strider, whose 5-2 loss on Sunday concluded the series, the games just played don’t matter all that much compared to what’s to come.

“[There were] a lot of weird hits. [The Mets] seem to be having a lot of luck right now offensively. That’s great. It’s August. (We’ll) see what things are like in October,” Strider said, per Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

New York certainly seemed to have luck on their sides at times in the series.

Still. he temptation may be to downplay the regular season games that don’t go their way, but Strider and company do need get a few games back on the Mets when they get the chance.

The Braves have another series with New York coming up in August. Those four games should also be pivotal in the division race, which now has a 6.5-game gap. They could also be key in the wildcard chase, which could have Atlanta looking over their shoulder as much as ahead at the Mets.

Just three games separate the Braves from the Phillies and the Padres in the National League. San Diego is especially dangerous considering the moves they made at the deadline.

New York took the first game in the series, 6-4, before Atlanta got them back on Friday, 9-6. Saturday’s double-header games both went the Mets’ way, 8-5 and 6-2. On Sunday, Jacob deGrom proved too much for ATL to handle. He brought a perfect game into the sixth inning and came out with a 5-2 win.
