Warriors use franchise legend to perfectly introduce throwback jerseys

The Golden State Warriors team up with Bay Area legend Chris Mullin to bring back some magic from basketball’s golden age for the current Warriors dynasty.

It’s hard not to get a little nostalgic about basketball in the ’80s and ’90s, especially as a Warriors fan.

There’s plenty to celebrate about the modern era — Golden State is very much in a golden age as they enjoy their fourth championship in seven years — but the Chris Mullin era is still one for the books.

Back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Mullin terrorized the league as a part of Run TMC, the highest-scoring trio in the 1990-91 NBA season. The No. 7 draft pick in 1985 has had his jersey number, 17, retired with the Warriors, but the Dubs still found a way to bring the Mullin-era jersey back.

In the nostalgic hype video, Mullin fields a call from Raymond Ridder, the SVP of Communications for the Warriors.

“That’s incredible news…let’s run it back.” Mullin says on the call.

“Man, I still got it,” Mullin says before he sports a vintage Warriors jersey, completing the outfit with the iconic Run DMC look.

Mullin proves that the glory of the Run TMC days is still within grasp, as Warriors players will have the opportunity to wear the same style of jersey Mullin and his Run TMC teammates, Tim Hardaway and Mitch Richmond, wore back in the day.

A comprehensive slideshow showcasing Warriors jerseys throughout the years features Mullin in 1988.

The team, which was formed in 1946 in Philadelphia, won the inaugural BAA championship in 1947 and again in 1956. Back in those days, the team was led by its own lauded trio featuring Hall of Famers Paul Arizin, Tom Gola, and Neil Johnston. After losing Wilt Chamberlain in 1965, the Warriors rose back to championship glory in 1975 with Rick Barry and Jamaal Wilkes at the helm.

That led all the way to the Chris Mullin era. While the team wasn’t spectacular throughout much of the 1980s, Mullin and the Run TMC crew brought the team to the playoffs regularly. Although Mullin never won an NBA championship, he was a five-time NBA All-Star, made the 1992 All-NBA First Team, and made the legendary Olympic Dream Team in 1992.

The turn of the decade wasn’t just a time for MJ — it was a time for TMC, one that Dubs fans can now reminisce about as their contemporary championship squad leads the way in 2022.
