When the Sharks season ended more than two months ago, it seemed like head coach Bob Boughner would be retained.
But now, after the entire Stanley Cup playoffs have wrapped up, they’ve made a coaching change.
Boughner and his entire three-person assistant coaching staff — Dan Darrow, John MacLean and John Madden — were let go late Thursday night, according to multiple reports (first from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman).Related Articles

San Jose’s search for a general manager appears to be nearing its conclusion and several former Sharks players were in the mix for the position still, including Ray Whitney, Mike Grier and Johan Garpenlov. Interim general manager Joe Will stressed that the team did not need to rush to a decision, even with the NHL Draft taking place on July 7-8 and free agency scheduled to begin on July 13.
The Sharks have been searching for a general manager ever since Doug Wilson stepped down on April 7, after months of a medical leave of absence. Boughner — who had one year left on his contract, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun — knew the search could have an impact on his job status when he did his season-ending exit interview.
“I would say this that, obviously, sooner than later, we’ll have to know so we can move forward,” Boughner said on May 2. “Whether that’s a new GM or whether that’s Joe or management or ownership making those decisions, you’d have to ask him.”
In that same interview, when he was asked when it would be ideal to get some clarity about his job status, so he and his staff can begin preparations for next season, Boughner said jokingly, “tomorrow?”
Several national NHL reporters noted that the timing is unusually late in the cycle for a team that did not make the playoffs. The decision to make this move now can be seen as quite unfair to Boughner and his assistant coaches, with most NHL assistant coach opportunities already getting filled.
That will be one of several questions that Sharks have to answer about this sudden change.

REPORT: Khamzat Chimaev passport seized in Russia
According to reports, Khamzat Chimaev’s passport was seized because of the war, and he was prevented from leaving Russia.
UFC star Khamzat Chimaev has had his passport seized by Russian authorities, and he is currently unable to leave the country, according to a report by Brazilian outlet Combate.
Chimaev was initially supposed to arrive in Rio de Janeiro this week to watch a film premiere about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Fernando Terere. However, his passport was taken because Russia “has been recruiting soldiers for the war against Ukraine,” the outlet says.
Chimaev had his passport seized in St. Petersburg, where he disembarked before heading to Chechnya to visit his family. Chimaev is a Chechen native; however, he currently resides and trains out of Sweden.Khamzat Chimaev’s team is trying to get him out of Russia
The fighter’s team is currently trying to get the Swedish government involved to bring him back to the country. There is no word on the exact reason why Chimaev’s passport is still being held.
Chimaev is a close friend of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who even attended his wedding earlier this year, but it’s unclear if that association helps or hurts Chimaev’s situation at this time.
