Who wouldn’t want some extra money – especially at the moment, when everything from energy bills to the weekly shop is getting more expensive?

1Pension credit is extra money to help with daily living costs

That’s why it’s more important than ever to look out for pensioners who might need more support.

The good news is that there’s extra financial help available. It’s called pension credit.

Around 1.4 million pensioners are already receiving pension credit but there could be as many as 850,000 other households missing out.

It’s one thing that could make a real difference, now that the cost of living is on the rise.

Pension credit is extra money to help with daily living costs for anyone who’s reached state pension age and is on a low income.

Plus, if you get pension credit, you can also get help with other costs such as your rent (in the form of housing benefit), council tax and heating.

And if you’re over 75 and getting pension credit, your TV licence will be free, even if you live with other people.

Even if you’ve got some savings or you’re a homeowner, you could still get that little bit extra.

Some pensioners may not know about pension credit or think they won’t qualify, and so don’t claim. But they could be missing out on money that they’re entitled to.

If you’re of state pension age, have a look today to see if you’re eligible.

Or if you have an older family member or friend you think may be entitled to pension credit, you can help them check and make a claim to ensure they are not missing out. So, what are you waiting for?

Let’s bust some pension credit myths Myth

I can’t get pension credit if I have a personal or workplace pension or any extra money coming in.

Fact

People of state pension age may be entitled to pension credit even though they have a retirement income through a private pension.

Pension credit tops up weekly income to a guaranteed minimum level of £182.60 a week for single pensioners or £278.70 for couples. It is a tax-free payment.

If you reached state pension age before April 6, 2016, you could get savings credit and still qualify for an amount of pension credit if your weekly income is less than £218.80 as a single person or £319.20 if there are two of you.

Myth

I own my home, so I can’t get pension credit.

Fact

Owning your home doesn’t stop you qualifying. And it doesn’t matter if you live alone or with people – for example, you might still be eligible if you live with your grown-up family or rent your home too.

Myth

I have savings so I won’t qualify for pension credit.

Fact

Savings of less than £10,000 will not affect your entitlement to pension credit.

If you have savings of more than £10,000, you may still get pension credit, but the amount you receive would be affected. Find out more online.

Myth

It’s too complicated to apply for pension credit.

Fact

There are several ways you can apply, so choose the easiest one for you. You can do it online, over the phone or by post.

And there is an online pension credit calculator, so you can find out how much you could get – without giving any personal details.

Myth

Pension credit won’t make a lot of difference to me.

Fact

Even if you qualify for a small amount of pension credit, there are many other things you could get help with, such as assistance towards your heating bills, housing costs, council tax and NHS dental care.

And if you’re over 75, you can get a free TV licence. With the rising cost of living and utilities, these knock-on benefits could make a big difference.

Myth

Someone would have contacted me if I were eligible.

Fact

Getting pension credit doesn’t happen automatically – you need to apply.

A whopping third of pensioners who could get pension credit don’t apply and miss out on this weekly top-up. Don’t be one of them!

Check your eligibility and see if you should be getting it. If you’ve applied for pension credit in the past but were unsuccessful or if you used to get it but don’t any more, it might be worth your while checking your entitlement again.

Are you missing out on pension credit?

Visit gov.uk/pension-credit or telephone 0800 99 1234 to check your eligibility and make a claim.

Have an older family member or friend? They might be entitled to get their state pension topped up with extra money from pension credit. Help them apply online.

Lewis Capaldi reveals which A-list singer inspired his new single Pointless

LEWIS Capaldi fans are in for a treat this morning as he finally unleashes another single from his hotly anticipated second album.

The Scot’s comeback single Forget Me has been riding high in the charts for months — and catapulted him back to the top of the pop hierarchy.

Pointless is the second single from upcoming album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent.

And Lewis admits he pilfered the heartfelt ballad’s opening lyric from pal Ed Sheeran — who had come up with the line in an earlier songwriting session.

With co-writers Steve Mac and Snow Patrol rocker Johnny McDaid, Lewis had been working on another track when the idea of finishing Ed’s opening came up.

Lewis explained: “Ed had this lyric, ‘I bring her coffee in the morning, she brings me inner peace’. And pretty much every other line of that opening was just banging.”

Having been played an early cut of the track before its release, I can confirm he’s not wrong.

Haunting opening lyrics and chords crescendo to a more anthemic chorus which sticks in the mind long after you’ve heard it — and means the song seems guaranteed to dominate the airwaves in the coming weeks.

A tease of the opening section has already amassed mil- lions of views online, as fans eagerly await the follow-up to his 2019 debut collection Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, which shifted a truly astonishing 10million copies.

And despite the upbeat feel of opening track Forget Me, Lewis insists he has no plans to radically change his style second time around.

“I don’t want to create a new sound for myself, or reinvent myself,” he added.

“The songs I want to write are emotional songs, about love or loss.”

The new album is set to be released in May next year and much of it was recorded at Lewis’s own home, using just his laptop and a simple microphone set-up.

This helped him to produce a relaxed feel.

He explained: “I felt like I was sounding better because I was just chilled out in my own gaff.

“Also, a lot of this record was made with most of the people who I worked with on the first one — at least one of them’s on almost every song.”

It’s already been a whirlwind return for Lewis, who rocketed straight to the top of the singles chart in September and smashed 100million streams globally in days.

He also sold out his upcoming 2023 UK arena tour in seconds — as he admits he’s now desperate to get back out on the road. He adds: “I’m ready. And so are the songs.”

Lewis calls this his “latest sad banger”. It’s hard to disagree.

Jordan’s modem romance

JADE THIRLWALL’s boyfriend Jordan Stephens is a big Microsoftie – he won her over with a PowerPoint presentation.

The former Rizzle Kicks singer has told how he sold himself to the Little Mix star by telling her about his best features.

9Jade of Little Mix has told how boyfriend Jordan won her over with a PowerPoint

He said: “We have a mutual friend and I saw she was single, so I said to the friend, ‘Can you pitch me to Jade?’.

“He screenshotted that text and just sent it to her. Then she DMd me like, ‘Alright, what are you saying?’

“I was like, ‘I’ve got a PowerPoint presentation’. I listed the things I thought were good about me and I sent it to her.

“Things like ‘my dog loves me’ and ‘I’ve got over five friends and I could have way more if I wanted to’.”

He tells tonight’s episode of The Big Narstie Show on Channel 4 at 11.05pm: “I love her a lot, I think she’s an incredible woman.

“I wasn’t raised with marriage as something I look for, but I would be open to it. I’m open to a celebration of love.”

Taylor on Iggy’s LP

IGGY POP has spoken about working with the late Foo Fighters band member Taylor Hawkins.

The drummer, who died on tour in March, plays on Iggy’s new album Every Loser, which is out next month.

In an interview in NME, Iggy said: “Taylor came in with incredible style. I’m very fortunate to have that colour on the record.

“I was really sad and shocked to hear about him.

“He did have a wonderful career doing what he wanted to do, and by all accounts, a good life.

“He drums up a storm on those tracks and you can really hear it.”

GUNS N’ ROSES will return here next summer, headlining BST Hyde Park in London on Friday, June 30.

The band – Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Dizzy Reid, Richard Fortus, Frank Ferrer and Melissa Reese – will perform for the event’s tenth anniversary.

Tickets go on sale on Wednesday next week.

NUTTY AMANDA & ASH ARE CRACKING

I’M not quite in the Christmas spirit just yet but these photos are certainly bringing me some festive joy.

Amanda Holden and Ashley Roberts drummed up some support for their Heart radio show by dressing up in these sexy Nutcracker costumes.

But their co-host Jamie Theakston must have wondered if his outfit was fir real, as he was dressed like a Christmas tree – complete with presents for shoes.

The trio got into the festive spirit to launch the station’s countdown to December 25 on their show yesterday.

There are just over three weeks to go until the big day but I have no doubt this lot still have plenty more extravagant costumes to wear before Santa Claus arrives.

Asked backstage at Wednesday’s event whether he could move into music, he said: “It’s a great idea.”

He went on to admit he can’t sing, but reckons he could make some good tunes because: “I can rap.”

Quizzed on whether he would actually be doing it, he added: “I’d love to.”

AJ is followed on Instagram by artists including Tinie Tempah, Becky Hill and Joel Corry, so he has plenty of mates who can help him out.

And while at the Mobos he made many more friends who could give him a hand in the studio.

The superstar was the most popular man in the room at the bash, at the OVO Wembley Arena in London.

A source said: “AJ really was the most in demand person there and also the nicest. He must have posed for hundreds of selfies because everyone was desperate to get a photo with him.

“He was loving it. He was in really good spirits and spent loads of time chatting to fans and admirers.”

CLIFFHANGER RACE TO NO1

SIR CLIFF RICHARD may regret buying Stormzy’s new album as it could have contributed to him being pipped to the post for No1.

The veteran has been battling the grime rapper all week in a race to the top of today’s charts and he shared this photo of himself with Stormzy’s This Is What I Mean after saying on TV he had no idea who he was.
